Yes - King Benny's in there too! Your speed and technique, touch and tone - everything is right up there with those great players of the past. I'd like to see you play "Hula Blues" sometime - there were so many fine recorded versions of this over the years, but I expect you would go for one of the interpretations by Sol Hoopi'i? [I myself prefer his later, slower instrumental version on electric steel guitar over the others, excellent though the others are]. Mahalo!
@HawaiianSteelGuitar3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words, Stan, glad you like it ! My arrangement of Hula Blues is a mix of Sol Hoopii, Bud Tutmarc and some of my own ideas. A video will come for sure !
@stanthesteelguitarman82283 жыл бұрын
I'll look forward to that, Sebastian. What do you think of the Felix Mendelssohn version of "Hula Blues"? This was the first Hawaiian record I heard, acquired for me by my dad when I was 10 years old, since when I've been hooked on steel guitar and Hawaiian music. [Pulu Moe was the steel player]. @@HawaiianSteelGuitar

I love it! You're an amazing musician. I've been on the fence for some time, flirting with the idea of learning the steel. When I see and hear you play, that fence trembles and I want to jump into the garden and get myself a steel guitar.

@@HawaiianSteelGuitar :D You're channel may just be that last gentle push I needed. Thing is, I love the old Hawaiian style. But I run away from Country. Just not my thing. Your sound and style, though, is exactly what draws me to this instrument. I'll be following your channel and ... if I get to start practicing myself, I will get back to you to let you know.

Sebastian, on top of incredible musicianship I just realized how long your finger picks are! That is a skill and maybe something for me to try?
@HawaiianSteelGuitar3 жыл бұрын
Hey Mick, I use plastic fingerpicks because of the warmer tone I am getting. It takes a while to adjust when you are used to metal ones, it's not that bad, though, takes a couple of weeks to get used to it.

Love all your videos. I don't play like that but I do have a dobro. I noticed you play in A as opposed to G. Just preference? Can I tune mine up from G without changing string gauge? It would be so much easier to follow along. Thanks. Dave
@HawaiianSteelGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Hi David, sorry for the delay, just saw your comment right now. I use A instead of G because it was the common tuning in the 30s, it is a bit of a different sound compared to G, I have the feeling it cuts better through in a band scenario, also you get slightly more volume. You need different strings, the strings I use are:16/18/22 (all plain) and 30/39/47 (wound). Hope this helps ! Aloha sebastian

I can imagine Charlie Chan dancing to this tune, on the top deck of an ocean liner. Fred Astaire would need to give him and others tips to move their feet a little faster. Number one son might be able to handle the tempo.
