Honor Role - Live in New York (1986) [FULL SET]

Live footage of Honor Role playing at CBGB's in New York in '86. This band featured one of my favorite guitarists who've ever walked the planet: Pen Rollings. He went on to form Butterglove after this, & then Breadwinner. Breadwinner are widely considered to be the Godfathers of Math Metal. Next, he played in Loincloth w/ my friend Tannon Penland & Steve Shelton (the drummer for Confessor). Honor Role was based in Richmond, Virginia. They played sick, technical post-punk.

These guys played a show at our house in Lawrence KS around this time. It was a last minute thing. We were all completely blown away and gobsmacked! Reed Mullin always told us Honor Role were insane whenever COC would come through… he was right

Jesus christ . First time hearing them. They are so ahead of their time. It sounds as if jesus lizard could have been influenced by this. I dont know if they were but it certainly sounds possible. This is brilliant. This recording could have been released as a studio album. It sounds so amazing for a live set.

Scratch acid, which was half of what became Jesus Lizard were around at the same time. Wouldn't be surprised at all if they played the same bill somewhere or at least listened to each other. This stuff reminds me even more of scratch acid than Jesus lizard...

Steve shelton may be one of the most brilliant drummers of our lifetime and he is so criminally overlooked. He was doing all the type of stuff that peop.e go crazy over tomas haak over years before. Im not disputing how amazing tomas haak is but steve shelton is just so brilliant. His intro on condemned always reminds me of an updated version of alex van halen on hot for teacher. I always think he would have been such a perfect drummer for the band Death.

I'm honestly not sure. I have digital copies of their whole discography, but I've not combed through it all yet. Could be a song they never recorded in the studio? I'm much more familiar w/ Pen's next bands, Breadwinner & Butterglove. Let me know if you know the name of the last song that Honor Role plays at this gig. They're all my friends and still one of my favorite bands ever. I used to roadie (poorly) for them. I'm at this show to the left of the stage. There are SO many Honor Role songs that never got released. Some got as far as the demo phase and fell to the side. Even I forget about songs until one surfaces on an old tape. A lot of these songs only had working inside joke titles. Sometimes those stuck and didn't reflect the finished song at all. Every couple of years there's talk of going through the old masters and releasing something. But current lives get in the way. Sadly, there's not much communication between the guys anymore. Somewhere in this video is a comment from a guy who roadie’d for them, he said it was one of many, many songs that never got recorded in the studio. Honestly, compared to a lot of punk LP’s from the mid 80’s, the sound quality on this video is pretty amazing.
