I am really glad I found this channel. I have read "James", "Don't Let Go" by Kennedy Ryan, "Razorblade Tears" by S. A. Cosby. All three books were really good. "I was pleasantly surprised with "James" by Percival Everett a great read. it was brilliant and clever hearing this story in Jim's voice. I will be reading more of his books. I just finished "When Crack Was King (A People's History of a Misunderstood Era)" by Donovan X Ramsey a nonfiction. Really interesting and read like a novel with real information. I just picked up "Skin and Bones" by Renee Watson. "Unsettled", "The Reformatory", "Not So Perfect Strangers" I own and are on my "TBR". I made a commitment with myself to read more African American Authors from a range of genres this year. I have always incorporated black authors in my reading of books. At this time in particular, I find it very necessary to read about us, because the tone around the country wants to erase our history, existence, etc. I refuse to allow our voices to disappear, be silenced, or to let others tell our story. I look forward to hearing and sharing with you and others on this channel.

I’m currently reading The Reformatory, too! Have to take it slow cuz it is heavy. I’m interested in checking out LS Stratton. I’ve never heard of this author, but I looked up the description of the book on Goodreads and it sounds really good. You might like Attica Locke-she writes literary mysteries and just concluded her Highway 59 series.

You shouldn't be ashamed of not reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. James isn't a retelling of Huck Finn but a conversation between Percival Everett and Mark Twain. The pages I'm turning is William Melvin Kelley's A Different Drummer, initially published in 1962. It's the story of Tucker Caliban, told from the perspective of white townspeople in a fictional southern state. Tucker salts his land, kills his livestock, burns down his house, and leaves with his pregnant wife and toddler son. The next day, all the Black people in the state move north, leaving the white people asking why it happened and figuring out what to do next.
