People who are against Spanglish don’t know that we can also speak correct English or Spanish whenever m we need to. We only speak Spanglish with fellow bilingual latinos.

The speaker quote: "Pobrecitos if you do not speak Spanish." Spanglish is ignorance of two languages. Just see who speak it. It is the lack of lexical resources, spelling and syntax in both languages that you need to compensate either other way. Clear example: "Ayer cuando estube en la librería..." 14:43. It is a hybrid way to communicate ideas and opinions.

"Most importantly it's not a deficient form of language." Yes it is. It arises from limitations and therefore is a less perfect means of communication. I use it because I can't convey the message perfectly using only Spanish.

I see it as being lazy but it’s become so common that, like anything else it’s become accepted and people argue for it. I say stop being lazy and learn and master both languages if you want to be bilingual.

Your thought of "Stop being lazy" is similar to logic employed in a response to your statement, "I would venture to guess that you do not speak Spanish or get upset if people talk to you in Spanish." Lazy is relative in this context. Then again, would it be lazy to assume others are lazy because one is lazy to think critically about language...hmmmm

Spanglish shows how limited you are in one or both languages. Also, I think it's a way for a bilingual person to kind of boast their ability to comprehend two languages. Just a bad habit, in my opinion.

@@DJTreviCSRecordings Spanglish doesn't necessarily help you understand other languages. Merely knowing English and Spanish is suffice. But, the more you master each language, that's what helps to understand other languages like Italian, Portuguese, & French. Spanglish is only used to replace a forgotten word or force of habit. There are no benefits to speaking two or three languages in one sentence. Rather confusing to people who only speak one.

@@SergioLopez-jl8tx Saw it and the woman referred to Spanglish very brief. She referred to it as "code switching", which is switching from one language to another in the same sentence. I always thought that was Spanglish. Turns out Spanglish is when you make up a term that doesn't exist in either language, like "chequear", a hybrid between the words "check" (English) & "revisar" (Spanish). This is how I spoke when I was 10 years old for lack of better understanding of both languages. Although I agree with her that exposing a child to two or more different languages at an early age will increase the chances of that child picking up several languages, she doesn't mention that Spanglish or code switching is crucial to the language development of that child. Spanglish is pretty much just slang. So, no thanks, no gracias, bu yao, xie xie.

Spanglish is not a deficit action, mannerism, or cognition. Instead, it is the ability to linguistically navigate and adapt to linguistic topographies and ideologies. The notion of "bad habit" is akin to mid-19th century efforts to discredit bilingualism and translanguaging. An exceptional number of folks that dominate both English and Spanish employ Spanglish as needed or simply - because they can.

I disagree. If it's even reasonable at all to accommodate foreign students in their native tongue, that accommodation should be geared towards eventually switching over to English only. I learn Spanish by choice because of my unique circumstances, but that doesn't mean it should be required of anybody living within the borders of the United States. You come to this country to live long term, you should AT LEAST be trying to learn the language.

Goodly Dra.....using Spanglish does not preclude speaking various registers of standard English (&/or Spanish) appropriate to the situation. It's only a deficit if it is your only style.......but if it's your first style, it needs to be validated during your childhood, it is the base for all your language growth.

why, theres no official language in the US; English is predominant in most places but not all so no one has to learn any language...

@@BabiiJennie8910 There is no official language in the US, but whether there is a official language or not, you should at least try to learn the dominant language. Just to make your life and others lives a little easier. Assimilating does not equal erasing their own language or culture. Besides, who doesnt want to know two languages.
