Adding a 1% solution of fresh hydrogen peroxide to your initial water will improve your germination rate. It helps to break down the waxes on the seeds surface to let the moisture in. It will also help to kill any mold spores. Also, pouring a small amount of dry play sand or builders sand over the seeds will aid germination by ensuring the entire seed casing is kept moist. Keep up the entertaining vids Hoocho!

You can use a strong drinking straw to take a plug out of the Rockpool cube - just twist it to bore in, and remove. Blow the plug out of the straw and then use the other end of the straw, cut at an angle, to easily drop the seed through the straw and into the hole.

Thanks for sharing, Hoocho! Cutting the cube smaller is a really cost-effective way for certain appraches like the NFT and the Dutch Bucket. But I'd imagine the limited water retention capacity makes it less suitable for other 'drier' approaches such as the flood-and-drain, unless there's other media such as coco coir added to surround the main root system. And in this case, it might make more sense to just start off the seedling in a sizable rockwool cube, like those seen in commercial tomato hydroponics.
@Hoocho
@Hoocho 2 жыл бұрын
Flood and drain should provide enough water and nutrients if you're using hydroton without any extra rooting media.
@plantdaddy109
@plantdaddy109 2 жыл бұрын
@@Hoocho Early on you’d probably need the flood to reach pretty darn high, close to the rockwool in that case, right?

I’d love to hear about your experience with dropping the cube directly into the nft. I’ve seen netcups, noodles, your pucks, etc. Dropping them directly in seems like a great resource saver and time saver as you don’t have to have an intermediate system for root development when using net cups, nor do you have to transfer fragile seedlings. Any issues with flow? Any issues with less aeration due to fully saturated cubes? Any concerns that saturation of the cube defeats the purpose of n.F.t? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks and great work

You don't have to plug the hole with more rockwool. Just fluff the edge of the hole with your poker tool so light can't get in so easily. If you drop them on top, you either have to not let them get light when they germinate, or you have to give the un sprouted seeds light before they're ready. Unless you have a second humidity dome under the light and individually transfer them when they pop

Late reply but if you still need help, one piece of advice I can give is not to have the rockwool sitting in the bottom of the tray. Use the tray set that comes with individual cells, they are fairly inexpensive and reusable. Also if you’re using a plastic dome cover, remove it after the second set of leaves so that the rockwool can air out and dry up some.

if u do this profesional u take ph corrected water and soak the cubes 24 hours in it and u are right u dont need nutientsfor the first days but alot of plant are ok with 1.2 ec even from seed. If u take no nutrients u have the danger that u might be one day to late and it cost u a little time if u have to much nutrients at the start it can be realy bad :D
