Thermos vs. Stanley Insulated Food Jar

I think a better experiment would be to have the thermoses of the same size (both 17 oz or both 24 oz). This video did a good job showing the hot and cold comparison though!

You’re right. Stanley makes a smaller ones that I could’ve compared it to. I thought it was fun to compare a big one to a small one though, and I was surprised at how well the little one did.

I do and have done much camping over my 70 plus years. I camp a minimalist style of camping taking my choice of Stanley or Thermos to keep items hot or cold over time. Your tests are in keeping with my own tests especially for the different sizes you used for your testing. I own both of them in the exact sizes you used. Size, however, does matter. Those extra ounces of air in the STANLEY makes a difference in heat or cold loss. When sizes are exactly alike, the temp differences are minor. I do love the 16oz Thermos size for pre-cooked meats (chicken, etc) and the STANLEY 24oz for liquids. Nice video, done right.

Thank you for the honest review. Just looking for a good thermos for my son to bring hot lunches to school in. I though the hydro flask was so cute, but didn’t want to be a sucker for cute packaging. Thanks for the experiment and not just an opinion. I think the Thermos would be more appropriate for a child.

I have both and I also have the 24 oz Thermos. I just swap the lid from the 16 oz one so I can still have the spoon. I've had my Stanley for 20 years. A couple of years ago I emailed Stanley because mine started to get a little bit of rust, which was more so because I use to put ice in my cooler and when it melted, the Stanley would sit in water. They sent me a replacement, only asking for the number on the bottom. Didn't ask for a receipt or proof of purchase. Now I have two. I prefer the Stanley because of the larger opening and it keeps food hotter longer, especially if I preheat it. I usually just run hot water from the tap in it in the morning. I like the Thermos because it's a lot smaller while still holding 24 oz. And the spoon, while small, is nice to have. I ordered a spork that also folds and fits in the lid. If I could only pick one, it depends. If I was still working outside 5/6 days a week and in the winter, I pick the Stanley. But working inside mostly, I prefer the Thermos. Mainly for it's size. I use the 16 oz Thermos for mostly for chili. Both are great.

They are great. It’s impressive how long the little one stays warm. I just got a new Stanley food jar that has an opening on it. That’s an inch wider than knees, and it’s a lot better for soup. It’s good for five or six hours of staying warm, so it’s perfect for lunch.

That’s a good point. You’re right. I should’ve compared similar sized jars, but I thought it would be fun to compare a big one to a small one. I find myself using a small one a lot more because it’s easier to fit in my lunch box.

Volume goes roughly by radius of cup cubed (^3) but area as squared (^2). So a larger volume will contain more heat, thus it will take longer to dissipate. The test is fair, don’t get me wrong… he compared the two containers and found which is better, but that’s part of the reason aside from any quality considerations.

I have the little thermous one. I work out of my car and love the little spoon that comes with it. I find it will keep the food hot for about 4 hours. It works for me for lunches very well. Washes easily in the dishwasher.

I agree that it’s great. It’s perfect for soup that you heat up in the morning and then eat for five hours later. And it’s smaller and more efficient than some other ones with the same volume. Also that little spoon is a great gimmick.

You should have test the thermos food jar 710 ml instead of this one, because it has same capacity with stanley model , and the 710 ml model of thermos keeps hot 🔥 for 14 hours in comparison with 470 ml ( 9 hours hot 🔥)

You’re right. It wasn’t exactly a fair fight, but it is interesting to see how a bigger jar does against the smaller one. i’m very impressed with how well the little thermos works.

You’re welcome. I think you’ll like it. I use those in the house as normal glasses all the time. I couldn’t see doing that with one of those giant 24 ounce glasses, but for a regular glass of water or a cold beer, it works great.

They are both good. I like the thermos because it fits easier into a lunchbox, and the spoon is a great extra feature. It doesn’t stay as hot for as long as the Stanley, but it stays hot longer than I need it to for lunch or dinner.

For the Stanley, does the lid have a vent??? I read a comment on a video where someone asked how to clean the mold in the lid inside the vent because it wasn’t big enough to use a straw brush or removable

The ventilation is just a valve in to a square hole so it is easy to clean. No risk of mold as I see it :) I bought the 0,4 stanley and I think it is great.

Ugh, so NEITHER has any insulation in the lid-bowl?!! Ok I’ve had the Thermos one for a month and a half to keep fairly solid stuff like fisherman’s pie hot, and honestly it’s terrible: designed by an idiot purely to look pretty. I start by filling with boiling water to warm the flask, closing the lid tightly and screwing on the bowl. After a few mins the outside of the upturned bowl is very warm so obviously neither lid is insulated. The waist section is also very warm on the outside so that’s not insulated either. Then about half n hour later I pour away the hot water and add bubbling hot potato pie and screw everything shut. Then I usually put it in the middle of my rucksack wrapped in a spare hoodie for extra insulation. After 6 hours the top inch is at room temperature. It does have side wall insulation but since neither top stopper nor bowl has any insulation it’s stone cold after 3hrs. That waist-band indent on the main body has no insulation whatsoever either. None. So that bit is also cold. Then the bottom two inches which is side-wall insulated gets a bit warmer so after 3hrs in July it’s the only bit which feels hot enough to warm you up. But after six hours it’s barely tepid. In July. Ok it’s been unseasonably cold this July, but we’re talking 21*C not below freezing. Then even the spoon is useless: too shallow for soup, it resembles a teaspoon not even a desert spoon. There is no way of locking the handle in place when it’s fully extended so even for something of the stiffness of mashed potato it’s constantly folding up sideways with normal use, and I had to add tape to the holder in the lid to hold it in place because it doesn’t fit properly in the clips and skidded across the floor every time I unscrewed the bowl. Even the pretty red colour on the outside is so thinly painted it immediately got scratches through to the grey steel underneath just from putting it down on concrete and tarmac. In contrast, the 500ml unbranded supermarket drinks flask I bought In about 2005, similarly pre-warmed and kept in the same conditions for six hours, keeps tea and coffee properly hot in summer and still usefully warm in sub-zero February. So if you work outdoors in all weather save your money, or buy a camping stove instead.

Hot food should be over 140° to be safe to eat. 120° is not a safe temperature and will allow bacterial growth and could result in food poisoning
