A high-flying adventure from the magic of Steven Spielberg, HOOK stars Robin Williams as a grown-up Peter Pan and Dustin Hoffman as the infamous Captain Hook. Joining the fun is Julia Roberts as Tinkerbell, Bob Hoskins as the pirate Smee, and Maggie Smith as Granny Wendy Darling, who must convince the middle-aged lawyer, Peter Banning, that he was once the legendary Peter Pan. And so the adventure begins anew, with Peter off to Neverland to save his two children from Captain Hook. Along the way, he rediscovers the power of imagination, of friendship, and of magic. A classic tale updated for children of all ages, HOOK was nominated for five 1991 Academy Awards® including best visual effects.

I'm watching this after learning about Maggie Smith's death. In this scene, the two characters (Robin and Maggie) meet and she says the line 'Its been 10 years between visits' This year marked the ten year anniversary of Robin Williams passing away - totally broke me

@@phaiz55 I think they probably aged her up for this scene (and the ones after it.) In the earlier one, where Moira is a child, she seems younger (albeit not _young_ young.) Sister Act came out the year after this movie, and I feel like her character in that also seemed quite a bit younger than this great-grandma.

It wendy knowing Peter became the thing he was trying to stop and the point of him coming to terms with the past and who he was is meant to show him becoming the hero and the leader the lost boys needed and him in his last battle with hook is him knowing it was going to be over and had to pass the role to someone else to carry the spirit as sometimes things can't last forever

Hi Silver. You can see this same connection of communicating and history of telling in Maggies eyes. This is so fascinating. WHAT A GORGEOUS JOB! I can´t believe how great this is played. As a kid I didn´t realize. Were they aware back then? I was a little kid and I was magically turned into a wonderland watching story´s wie Robin Williams. Story´s with Robin, they are so classic. Well I must say, I miss him. Story´s with Maggie, they always have this little lovely picaro. I am stunned with this great talent of Maggie. You know actresses and actors have a really hard job. Their job is to tell story´s in moving pictures and they have to show the feelings of character in their best doable way. And some of them are just marvellous. I feel blessed to know this scene and the story. I am also blessed to know that I know Maggie before I learned about her as Minverva. Good to see, that movie making is like a little family, where the great actresses and actors work together like a big family. This is gorgeous to see. Well done.

"Hello boy~" The way she says those words touches the core of my soul. It takes me back to when I'd play out in the woods, thinking I was a knight protecting a castle or a pirate sailing on the high seas. My mom always worried about taking me saltwater fishing 'Because the sea takes those she loves'. She said I wouldn't go to The Celtic Isles until I grew up "Because The Tuatha De Danann would want you, and I'd have a hard time getting you back."

You have to remember and I speak as someone who saw this in theaters when it came out. This film faced HEAVY competition at the time. What would later be revealed in the years after was just how much of a nightmare production was as the film was HEAVILY reshot. The film had good word of mouth but it wasn’t jumping for joy by any means.

Feels like a reverse of the young boy scene where his parents have a new kid which makes he feel uncomfortable and unwanted. Here he’s wanted but the house makes him uncomfortable since a lot of the people are gone aside from Wendy, Tootles, and Liza. Plus it seems like there’s always unfinished business. Plus he’s very forgetful which is a callback to the original when he went to fetch Wendy for spring cleaning he practically forgot their first adventure

Crazy to think that Wendy had a framed photo of Peter as he once was and kept it right there in the front room. To any visitor it’s just a childhood photograph of one of the many orphans she helped during her life, but only Wendy and Tootles would know it was a real photograph of a supposedly fictional literary character. It also adds to Peter’s suppressed memories that he is unable to recognize himself in his youth. Even wilder is that, since it’s a black and white photo, you’re never really sure if it was taken shortly after he decided to stay, or during one of his many other visits with Wendy.

This movie hits me in more ways than one. 1) One of my favorite Robin films RIP. 2) I first saw this in 2001, the summer after my father died. He was gonna be one of my school trip chaperones. It was playing on the bus trip to DC. I related to Jack because I hated my dad for leaving me.

You can tell at 2:53 how Wendy noticed how much Peter has changed and not for the better. She sees how broken he is and understands but keeps it to herself to play the part for the family. Their story goes so far back that even at this point Peter has forgotten but deep down has that vibe with Wendy. Soulmates.

John Williams flutes that come @2:20 as Wendy slowly steps into the light is a fantastic intro to a character and a wonderful theme heard throughout the film in so many variations (when Peter takes flight again later in the film it's presented in full orchestral glor y)

I love alllllll the foreshadowing that's in this dialogue & how it's by using ordinary phrases: "lost my marbles" "by hook or by crook" "blowing them out of the water" It was a bit of a stretch using "pirate" to describe him as an aggressive lawyer, but it made for a great dramatic flourish at the end there! Love this movie; this film WAS my childhood 🥰

Why is Wendy so old and decrepit and Peter isn't?
@rickbruner5525
@rickbruner5525 Жыл бұрын
@@cjsk45 Because Peter went back to Neverland and when he finally returned Wendy was older and had a granddaughter, Moira, who Peter then took to Neverland as well. So there were long periods of time when Peter didn't age, but Wendy did. The time stop even affected Wendy's grand daughter, Peter's wife, which is why she has such an old grandmother.
@Holly-on6ey
@Holly-on6ey Жыл бұрын
@@cjsk45 She only went to Neverland every once in a while until she was too old to travel. Peter stayed in Neverland so therefore he didn’t age. He only decided to leave Neverland when he saw Wendy’s granddaughter(Moira) grown up and fell in love with her. He was essentially immortal until then.
@brando4422
@brando4422 Жыл бұрын
@@cjsk45He never stayed so she aged and he stayed a boy. Then he stays after seeing Wendy's granddaughter who was around his age at 13 to be with her. He would have been her age if he had stayed when Wendy was young and they would've aged together. So between when she meets him as a girl, then him. finally staying and giving up childhood for her granddaughter made her at least 40 years older. So basically time stopped for him going back but not her, then his time went like the rest aging with her granddaughter his future wife by never returning to Nederland where the other boys stayed boys since they never left.

Sad day today. Rip Dame Maggie, such a legend. Have fond childhood memories of watching her in 'hook', 'the secret garden' and 'sister act' her later roles in Harry Potter, Downton Abbey etc were equally as brilliant but just not as poignant for me as those 3 classics. May you rest in peace and always be remembered dame Maggie, a true treasure ❤️❤️
