A high-flying adventure from the magic of Steven Spielberg, HOOK stars Robin Williams as a grown-up Peter Pan and Dustin Hoffman as the infamous Captain Hook. Joining the fun is Julia Roberts as Tinkerbell, Bob Hoskins as the pirate Smee, and Maggie Smith as Granny Wendy Darling, who must convince the middle-aged lawyer, Peter Banning, that he was once the legendary Peter Pan. And so the adventure begins anew, with Peter off to Neverland to save his two children from Captain Hook. Along the way, he rediscovers the power of imagination, of friendship, and of magic. A classic tale updated for children of all ages, HOOK was nominated for five 1991 Academy Awards® including best visual effects.

@@phaiz55 I think they probably aged her up for this scene (and the ones after it.) In the earlier one, where Moira is a child, she seems younger (albeit not _young_ young.) Sister Act came out the year after this movie, and I feel like her character in that also seemed quite a bit younger than this great-grandma.

Hi Silver. You can see this same connection of communicating and history of telling in Maggies eyes. This is so fascinating. WHAT A GORGEOUS JOB! I can´t believe how great this is played. As a kid I didn´t realize. Were they aware back then? I was a little kid and I was magically turned into a wonderland watching story´s wie Robin Williams. Story´s with Robin, they are so classic. Well I must say, I miss him. Story´s with Maggie, they always have this little lovely picaro. I am stunned with this great talent of Maggie. You know actresses and actors have a really hard job. Their job is to tell story´s in moving pictures and they have to show the feelings of character in their best doable way. And some of them are just marvellous. I feel blessed to know this scene and the story. I am also blessed to know that I know Maggie before I learned about her as Minverva. Good to see, that movie making is like a little family, where the great actresses and actors work together like a big family. This is gorgeous to see. Well done.

It wendy knowing Peter became the thing he was trying to stop and the point of him coming to terms with the past and who he was is meant to show him becoming the hero and the leader the lost boys needed and him in his last battle with hook is him knowing it was going to be over and had to pass the role to someone else to carry the spirit as sometimes things can't last forever

It takes me back to when I'd play out in the woods, thinking I was a knight protecting a castle or a pirate sailing on the high seas. My mom always worried about taking me saltwater fishing 'Because the sea takes those she loves'. You have to remember and I speak as someone who saw this in theaters when it came out. This film faced HEAVY competition at the time. What would later be revealed in the years after was just how much of a nightmare production was as the film was HEAVILY reshot. The film had good word of mouth but it wasn’t jumping for joy by any means.

That is one of my favorite Spielberg films. It sometimes is a little over the top, but woaw... Great performances, Robin Williams is just perfect, both as the dour, stuck-up businessman, the childlike Peter and the final, perfectly balanced Peter. Dustin Hoffman as Hook ? What more to say, apart from "good form" ! Maggie Smith, perfect. And everyone else, even the much maligned Julia Roberts, is pretty much spot on. The children give great performances, as usual in Spielberg's movies. And the music... Absolutely stunning, but John Williams, so no need to say more. This is such a beautiful, thoughtful, emotional, funny, touching movie, despite its flaws.

Man. They don’t make good movies like this anymore. I know the images and CGI was in its infancy. But. Something about the creative care to detail, screenplay. Even the slight glare/dreamy feel of the way this film was shot back then; it brought a kind of magic modern films don’t anymore.

"No growing up. Stop, this very instant". That's one thing about life that we should always remember. Growing up and losing all of the young excitement and fun that you had when you were younger really is what many people lose by their early twenties, and it is a sad and unfortunate thing about life with age, but it depends on how happy you are as a person to be fun and exciting. There might be a difference between a 22 year old and a 27 year old, but that doesn't mean that people should stop acting goofy and not tease each other, because having fun and being excited is what life for all of us should be about. One of the sweetest things that can come from life is sarcasm and teasing, and that should never disappear, because the fun of joking around makes life happy. If someone has no sense of humor, then life around them would be dull, so let's just do our best to spend time being happy, especially for others around you that you care for.

Act 1 and Act 3 of this movie are BRILLIANT. Act 2, where Peter is trying to find his childhood in Neverland, could have been totally skipped. Robin Williams doesn't play a "fish out of water" weakling very well; he was totally misused in Act 2, but he's brilliant in the 1st and 3rd Acts.

Crazy to think that Wendy had a framed photo of Peter as he once was and kept it right there in the front room. To any visitor it’s just a childhood photograph of one of the many orphans she helped during her life, but only Wendy and Tootles would know it was a real photograph of a supposedly fictional literary character. It also adds to Peter’s suppressed memories that he is unable to recognize himself in his youth. Even wilder is that, since it’s a black and white photo, you’re never really sure if it was taken shortly after he decided to stay, or during one of his many other visits with Wendy.

Not really. In the original book Wendy left Peter because she accepted growing up, whereas Peter wanted nothing to do with it at the time. It does make sense that Wendy planted the seed for him to be willing to grow up eventually, it just took him decades for that seed to sprout.

@@Dragon_Lair I was talking more about how the film presents Moira as the one Peter stays for. Yes, they do have the reveal that he wanted to be a dad, but the film makes it look like he stayed because of Moira. It never made sense to me that he would do so for her, since the movie never really gives much time to their relationship. Which is why Wendy always made more logical sense. I did a summary rewrite that had a lot of changes to the story. Changing the time period from the early 90s to the mid 20s, where Peter and Wendy come back to London for the funeral of Wendy's parents and deciding on what to do with the Darling home. A backstory is revealed that despite Peter returning to Neverland, he began to age (as did everyone else) and Tink reveals that Neverland has always had a host, someone of pure childhood (hinting at others before him). In order to keep his status, he would either have to erase his memories of Wendy (the cause of this) or find a replacement. After seeing Wendy with her family, he chooses a replacement (aka Rufio) and Wendy helps him become adopted into the family. Years later, Peter becomes successful and Wendy reveals her feelings for him, the two eventually marrying and having two kids. There's a lot more I changed as well but it's pretty much the same premise. Hook returns to kidnap Peter's children and Peter returns to Neverland, along with Wendy, to save them, while also exploring their past and reclaiming some of his childhood innocence along the way. But those are the main changes.

@@tjjordan4207 It literally removes all of the bittersweet elements of this story and the memory loss, the Tinkerbell tension...it takes a very unique spin on Pan and just sort of turns it into a straight to video Disney sequel, Peter Pan 2: Return to Neverland. It also has the weirdness of adopted siblings falling in love. I get your reasoning, and I do appreciate that you shared your thoughts in public, but I don't think I'd care much for this version, at least not over the one we got. But then again, I was a kid when this came out, so maybe it just took root in my nostalgia and my bias is lacking in objective criticism.

The funny thing is that I was just considering the possibility of Peter Pan and Captain Hook being a metaphorical son/father relation. Like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. So, its an interesting caveat to see represented here. I haven't seen this movie since the 90s, I don't remember any of it, except Rufio I guess. My brother liked Rufio alot. Not sure what the metaphor means though. Other than something about time forcing the issue, or the hero becoming the villain. That somehow doesn't fit the narrative though. Perhaps in the original story, Hook is just a foil to Peter, and it's not related in the tragic sense, like Darth Vader and Luke.

He's a pirate because he engages in acts of destruction that basically serve to distract him from the true meaning of life. He's become part of the rat race of adults who want to get lost in ideas of self-importance and forget that time exists. Hook knows this best which is why there are no clocks allowed near him. But neverland is also a fantasy, and one cannot live there forever lest one forfeits their chance to experience and pursue things like a family and meaningful responsibilities. Peter Pan, to me, is a story about meaning & purpose in the guise of "happy thoughts." At the core, it's about those who have happy thoughts, those who don't, and those who have forgotten them.g
@grantmccoy6739

@@c4kefrosty862 that's interesting, but I still feel like something is missing in your analysis. The metaphorical pirate comparison is fairly direct honestly. I think the broader message is that adults learn to compromise their values because of their understanding of reality. It's the desire to remember the childlike magic that can help adults become uncompromising.
