I've been a fan of Dame Maggie Smith for decades. And while most younger people remember her for Downton Abbey, Gos and Harry Potter, I remember when she was young. She had so many memorable roles like The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, The Honey Pot, The Oriental Express, Evil under the Sun, Gosford Park...so many great performances! She will be missed!

I remember her most fondly from The Secret Garden, as Mrs. Medlock, the head housekeeper of Misselthwaite Manor. Her character came across as an overly stern and harsh lady, but we later learn it was because of the stresses of her job and caring for the young Colin Craven. Mrs. Medlock was as caring and loving as all of Maggie Smith's characters. Minerva McGonnagal reminded me of Mrs. Medlock very much.

No she was only 55! (it was filmed in 1990 - she was born in 1934) It's a shame she is only remembered for playing old ladies as she won her first Oscar in 1969 but most her early performances are forgotten

I always thought the "what if Peter Pan grew up" motif that Spielberg illustrated in this incredibly well-executed film was bloody BRILLIANT. On top of it making Peter's arc far more powerful and meaningful, it clearly put everyone in the mindset of just how F'ed up humans can be when they become too lost in terrestrial, banal, societal, temporary crap. The scene where Banning is on the phone about his failed "5 billion dollar deal" and takes it out on his family is pretty telling, and extremely relevant to modern day society... where all that matters is none other than money. 💵🇱🇷💵 "Rings of Power", indeed. 😕 R.I.P. Maggie Smith

I think it’s weird when people talk about Maggie Smith as if she wasn’t famous before Harry Potter or Downton Abbey. I was born in the early 80s and grew up watching her on VHS movies as a kid (Death on the Nile, Evil Under the Sun, Murder By Death anyone?) and of course later when I was older I saw her older more adult films like Room With a View and The Prime Miss Jean Brodie on DVD before the internet age while in high school and college. She was in a bunch of hit movies in the 1990s that I saw in theaters like Hook, Sister Act, The Secret Garden, and the First Wives Club, and that same decade she won a Tony Award. Before that she had won one Academy Award in the 1960s and a second in the 1970s. In the 1980s she won a Golden Globe Award. Plus she had a ton of BAFTA wins and nominations before the 2000s. In short she was well loved and well known long before Harry Potter and Downton Abbey. Sister Act was such big hit in the United States I don’t think many Americans would have not known who Maggie Smith was after that movie.

Sadly, a truckload of classically trained, successful actors remain unknown, unappreciated, or utterly obscured unless they become reeeally lucky with a worldwide-known film. Ian McKellen was bloody brilliant for decades looonnng before PJ & NLC's LotR films and X-Men. Same with Patrick Stewart and Alan Rickman. Heck, even Catherine Zeta-Jones was kickin' it strong on Broadway well prior to her legendary performance as "Elena" in Zorro with Banderas. I've plenty more examples (because I have 30+ years of experience in production), but no one probably cares nor needs to read any more from me, lol! 😂

Growing-up I saw both, "Hook" (gap) "HP-atSS" in theaters with a long interval of not seeing Maggie Smith until HarryPotter came to theaters. I went into HarryPotter blind. As a small child when I saw Hook in theaters I really believed Maggie Smith was really older than 50, and thought between movies she was long gone. UNTIL SHE APPEARED IN HP! And when I saw her I couldn't believe it. I shouted, "SHE'S STILL LIVING!!" In theaters 😂 And when my mom saw her in a news broadcast featuring the HP-atSS, she said the same thing. Now I will never see her again to shout, "she's still living."😭😭RIP!💔😿💔
