Quick question: Is it possible to get negative strain in one direction even if the stress in that direction is positive (e.g. Can εy be negative when σy is positive?)

Of course! Good question. The strain in each direction depends not only on the stress in that direction, but also on the stresses in the two other directions as well as the change in temperature. So in this example where σz and ΔT are zero, εy will be negative with any σy value smaller than 0.33σx. For example if σx was +10 and σy was +3, εy would still be negative. I hope that makes sense.
