The G. Loomis Asquith 9' 5 wt. may a wonderfully sensitive and accurate trout fly rod, but that's not all it can do. Watch me toss a nasty, big, weighted fly for smallmouth bass.

Great video review. This realtime real fishing first person stuff is what all the rod reviewers should be doing. I guess many are sponsored or reviewing items they sell - I haven't found anything like your video as yet. Great to see you actually demonstrating everything you were talking about in real time. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your vids. Keep up the good work and all the best to you.

Love your video, very informative. I started fly fishing 3 months ago and use a 5wt Martin rod and am completely addicted. I was thinking of casting a #4 streamer for bass. Thank you for helping me see that it can be done.

Holy crap any chance I could get the specs for the streamer(Hook) and tippet/leader, had no clue you could throw things that big!👌🏾🔥 I wanna fish some decent trout, and some nice small mouths, any tips for making an outfit for good sized trout and some nice small mouth bass?

Hook: #4 or #6 streamer Bead: 5/32” gold Thread: 6/0 olive Wire: fine gold Body: Ice chenille, medium, olive Wing: Rabbit, olive, tips dyed black Legs: Rubber, olive and black Collar: Hen grizzly dyed olive Add lead behind the bead if needed for extra depth. Bassbug lines are usually needed for flies this big. My leaders are longer than most people use, being around 8' with a 10 lb. tippet. This depends a lot on the capabilities of the rod, but some 5 wts. out there will let us cast heavier lines without any problem. I used an AFTMA accurate 5 wt. line in the shootout format video with this rod, but in this video I had a 6 wt. bassbug line on it. The rod handled it easily. I often go two line weights up on my Loomis Shorestalker 6 wt. when I want to chuck something really big and ugly. Again, the rod handles it easily. That's not true of all rods though. So a 5 wt. rod that handles both real 5 wt. lines and also heavier ones allows us to use the same rod for finesse casting to trout and slugging big nasties for bass.

Hi Peter it’s now 2024 have you found a rod better than the Asquith?
@hooked4lifeca6 ай бұрын
Ya, another Asquith. ;) Seriously, I don't usually think in terms of good, better, best. For fishing rods, it's just a matter of the fishing situation and what I felt like fishing that day. For pure performance, the Asquith and NRX+ are usually near or at the top of any rod competition.

Hi I know i’m late but I just bought a 5wt rod and wanted to catch big smallies with streamers but by looking at other people on the internet I was having doubts I could do it. So do you think I could?

When it comes to casting smallmouth bass flies on a 5 wt., it's actually more about the line than the rod. In this video I'm using an Airflo Bass/Musky taper 6 wt. line. Most 5 wts. will easily handle a 6 wt. bass line. With that setup, handling the bigger flies becomes less of a problem.

Ok thank you

What reel have you paired to this rod?
@hooked4lifeca3 жыл бұрын
I typically use a Danielsson FW 4seven or 5eight (same sized reel, different spools).
