What a great question. I had wonderful luck winter sowing, direct sowing, and indoor starting Larkspur last year, so that’s back on my list. Dianthus is hardy in my Zone 5b, so that’s a winner. Alyssum was an amazing pot filler and ground cover (indoor started) last year - I’m getting it in every color this year. I’ve heard that Saponaria will also overwinter, so I’m branching out with that new flower. Sunflowers, more focus on pollenless next year. Your Gomphrena experience has been on my mind since last year, it was so gorgeous! Dahlias from seed were so much fun last year that I can’t wait to grow them again. Mostly though … it’s bulbs for me. I did save a bunch of grape hyacinth, regular hyacinth, and species tulip seeds from my in-ground plantings - popped them into the ground this fall. Here’s hoping it works!

These are all great vendors. One of my favorites that you didn't mention though is Harris Seeds. They're great for some hard to find varieties and bulk seed. Even simple bedding plants have gone up in price drastically so if I want twenty geraniums, or vinca plants, it's much more economical to grow it myself and they have some great choices. They also carry some varieties that I have not been able to find anywhere else. I tried Pinetree for the first time last year and got great germination. Their prices are excellent if you don't need too many of a particular variety so they got the bulk of my order this year.

Nice review and several that I am also growing. Last year I had great germination with Swallowtail, but the coral geranium was red orange and they did resend replacements and we will try again. The double petunias and frost petunias performed very nice. One thing I noticed on the Foxglove comparison is Swallowtail said they were pelleted seeds and probably reason they were higher. No idea why such a difference on rudbeckia. I had to chuckle when you would like to have cut flowers but prefer to leave them. I’m the same.😊 Everyone liked the black cherry here also. Many liked the Sun Gold, but I tried one in late fall and it had the texture and taste of a grape. I think Kevin at Botanical said something might be up with the hybrid. I will try a different good in hopes it’s not so sweet. Will check out Select Seed. Now I have a question. I love to winter sow and last year was bad. I used several Swallowtail perennial seeds and others. Very low turnout and most failed. Our winters in WI are Way too warm and rainy and I think the seeds are rotting and/or germinating and freezing. I looked in my notes and about 2nd week of February noted seeds swelling and then we had snow. It just isn’t staying cold here-temps are mainly up with some cold snaps-not steady. I can’t remember what zone you’re in and have noticed many who are near water and or Warmer zones are faring better. I wonder if I should just wait till it’s closer to March to try again. Last year it rained and then froze. It’s about 20 degrees above avg now and will be for at least 2 weeks or more and I’m sure some snow will arrive just when we think it’s spring. Maybe set them in the shade? Thanks for any ideas on this.

Nice selection. For the foxglove, Swallowtail's seeds were pelleted, if that makes a difference to you. For some plants, like lisianthus I prefer the pelleted seeds, but foxglove not so much as I scatter the seeds in a large tray (wow these seeds are tiny!) then divide and separate to individual cells to develop strong plants. I expect some brilliant blooms this year from the biennial varieties I planted last spring (Gloxinaflora mix, Foxy & Giant Spotted). The Dalmation Peach did not perform so well for me a few years ago.

Someone gave me that organizer for Christmas! I only use some of the seeds and store the rest - they do fine for a year. I tend toward Heirlooms in tomatoes and peppers, though my Corno di Toro is a monster in germination and production. I grow using shelves but increasingly I use the milk jug route. It's just so easyand for petunias and similar flowers so easy. AVOID: Amazon (frequently from China, takes forever, wrong kind) and Seednerds who also uses China. I waited for seeds for 26 days last year from them. Baker's is incredible but Migardener is not far behind - by far the best prices.

That was fun! I moved over the summer and am starting a new garden. I did manage to get a couple of hydrangeas in the ground. It's a small yard and I'm happy with it as I will be 64 next month. My question is, how do you determine the number of seeds to plant? In the past I've had too many, especially vegetables. Thank you for another great video and now I'm going to check out your winter sowing video, I'd love to try it. Also, I'm zone 5a so I can grow a lot of the same as you.
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted 10 ай бұрын
Hi Mary! congrats on starting a new garden. Small yards are nice, and hopefully would be easier for you to maintain over time. As for how many seeds to start, here's what I would suggest, lets say you want to end up with 6 plants, I would plan to sow double, so at least 12 seeds. The reason for this is because its always likely that a few wont germinate. And even if all 12 seeds germinate, there's a possibility of losing a few seedlings as they grow on, due to dampening off etc. Only the strongest will survive. Then if you still end up with a couple you don't need, its easier to manage to give away or rehome a handful versus a whole bunch. Hope this helps. Winter sowing is great! Yes, please check out my 5 min quick start kzbin.info/www/bejne/npaZoXmfitabncUsi=d_DH5TX_izCPk4mu , and then I have some in depth individual videos as well on my winter sowing playlist. Thank you so much for watching my videos, and for your comment.

Hi Steph! I just ordered the seed container, thank you for the link!! Question about the gomphrena… do you have experience with PW truffula pink? I’m wondering how your purple might compare to it?

Hi Tina! I hope that you find the case as useful as I do. While I have never grown the PW truffula pink gomphrena, I have seen it grown in other peoples gardens on Instagram etc. and it seems to do well.

Hi Steph, I was wondering if you ever collect your zinnia seeds and save them year to year.?

Hi! I do save some seeds from year to year. I actually saved some of the raspberry ripple and plan on sowing some as a test to see what they look like. However, I wanted to order another pack to be certain I could grow the same variety again.

I certainly could be mistaken but I’m not seeing the height of full grown flowers on Baker Creek site. It’s making my planning difficult…is it hidden somewhere?

Hi there, I believe you are correct. It would be very useful information to have. I have had to google varieties in the past to get their growth height.
