Pike Fishing on the Aire and Calder Canal

This week I return to the Aire & Calder canal at Pollington for a pike fishing session.
With an early start on the cards I plan fishing deadbaits for pike using a float paternoster setup.
I also take the lure rod to try to fool the pike that have actively been taking the roach from match and pleasure angler fishing the pole.

Couple of reet crocodiles were them mate, but proves there only taking static baits rather than lures. A cracking video yet again.

Thanks Tony. The pike are thriving and clearly there's plenty of bait fish to support them but yes they are very active hitting them, incredible creatures.

Cracking video and some great pike there! Just getting into piking a bit more at the moment so nice to see how its done. I'm doing well on the lures, mostly soft plastic paddle tails doing the business. Dead baits not working well but still trying for a better fish on them!

Livebaiting is best but a contentious issue. Deads usually find the better fish though as big pike are generally lazier. Plenty of other ways if setting up a pike rig, I'll try and cover a few more setups in the coming months.

Thanks Geoff, I went back to pike fishing in winter after I stopped fishing the winter leagues, I still keep my fishing varied in the colder months and fish the odd match or two but I do enjoy the pike sessions, certainly gets the heart racing when there's a big girl on the hooks. Very happy with those fish and hope to get a few more out over the coming months.

A couple of good fish. They do put up a fight in there no matter what the time of year. All the pike I've had on lure, not many, have come fishing them p[parallel to the bank.

Yes I tried a few cast down the length but still nothing. Wish I'd had my silver spoons, feel they would've worked better.

@@HOOKEDFishingChannel Maybe. Some pike anglers told me they rarely come out on lure around there because it gets hammered with them and the pike are wary of them.

I would say that's probably true, plenty of lure anglers down this weekend, nobody fishing deads.

Morning John what peg do you fish watched both your pike videos and went down with the wife yesterday evening and it's lovely. Do you go in from the left and park at the bridge where you park on the grass too the left and walk past the lock or do you get on from the right? if so how do I get too that bit. My canal & water key didn't work neither Excellent videos also love them pike

What best pike you ha e had out there I went other week and fished on boat side was a hard day with only two runs and lost the only fish that progressed to anything

That's like fishing, some days they have it, some days they don't. 19lb my best down there, seen the odd low 20 come out though.

Excellent couple of pike there Chris, been alot of Predictor activity round the boats all summer. You prefer early mornings for the best fishing?

Hi Nettie, yes I prefer the morning only because I'm usually up early and it gets cold into dark now. We fished the canal match at the weekend and most of us got piked again. I put my catch back after the weigh in and a huge fish swirl after them in the edge, it was last hour before dark.

Hi Ryan yes you can fish it on the Hull book and pretty much any other book available in Yorkshire, it's controlled by BACJCC.

Hi Christopher. I fished around peg 114 but any of the pegs around the boats will throw up plenty of pike. I park on crowcroft lane at the bridge or just round the corner on the grass verge. Walk down the ramp and back under the bridge up to the boats.

Jon it was well hard 41 won then 17 that I had then 13, and lower one guy had one take one fish in 5hours the wind didn't help not an excuse but a fact the average fish was 3lb and under so a hard day's fishing

What stretch of the canal did u fish? Me and my mates went fishing in airie and calder navigation but had no luck so I’m just curious if we were in the wrong part of it for pike fishing.

There's pike all over the canal bud, sometimes they bite other times they don't but it's better when the weather cools down and the bait fish shoal up. Keep your eye on the match results wherever the bait fish are the pike are never far away.
