Aire & Calder Canal MATCH FISHING Spring League 2022 Round 5

This week I'm back on the Aire & Calder Canal match fishing in round 5 of the Mirfield AC spring league.
Tactics would be the usual feeder fishing for skimmers and bream and the pole fishing for bream and perch.

well done john persevered on feeder payed off to say fish were scarce,, bit o money, good luck at southfield.its an hard venue.

Thanks John, the pole lines just wouldn't produce so I made the changes on the feeder and it took a while to get those last couple of fish but felt like there were a few more there at the end, they were just very cagey.

Thanks Mark, the canal can be brilliant fishing and other times just frustrating but there's miles of it to go at so the fish could be anywhere on the day.

you certainly ground that one out... have you ever tried waggler over your long pole line at various depths..... slow sinking pinkie... catapulting 3 or 4 in each cast..? these deep venues they sit at different depths especially match wary fish, they know where they are safe.. just a thought to snatch a few bonus silver on a hard day perhaps..

I actually tried my light 0.4g pole rig on the long line at various depths, I just didn't show it. I also tried hemp on the inside - there were definitely some fish in the upper layers but they are incredibly difficult to catch. If the canal starts towing, the fish generally won't take a moving bait, held back hard or just inched through is usually the way to catch, a waggler has limited use on the A&C, not saying it won't work but pole is better, lifting and lowering or laying the rig back in.

Thanks Martin, it was hard work but always nice to see the tip finally go round in the afternoon, didn't think it was going to happen but that last half hour I felt there was a couple more fish to be extracted, just couldn't quite get them to make the overall frame.

Thanks bud, need a better section to win overall, but you just never know where they're going to turn up on the day which keeps it interesting. Getting a touch just confirms there's not much wrong with the tactics. 👍

Haha James, don't think I'll be retiring any time soon.😉 The canal has thrown some decent weights up but you've got to be on them on the day, I've drawn some difficult areas and the whole canal has switched off a bit now as the fish are spawning but it should pick back up in a couple of weeks. It's a great canal.

Use a couple of light rigs just to see if the fish are mid level.

Not sure what your point is here Andy, it was hardly a speed fishing day, if there's hundreds of fish to be had on the whip or pole I might accept a 'slow' comment but I'm far from slow when in the zone.
