Five years sober now. The thought of being out of control now scares me. I guess thats the same principle as Tippie’s play the tape forwards. MTB helped a lot. I used to look back and think those times were funny and full of entertaining stories. Now i see them as a dark chapter in my life. Most of my friends are either alcoholics, drug addicts, both or dead. Admittedly i spend a lot of time on my own camped out in the woods with a bike and my Labrador. But im happy and sober.

"Your darkside has as much willpower as you do." That is a powerful revelation to have. Thank you, Tippie, for sharing that!!!

I think what many of us really love about Brett is his authenticity! Whether he's hyping up Crankworx or sharing personal tragedies, he's genuinely himself. Loved this confessional!

@@pascalsavy1306 Is a expression you can use to say "Awesome job" or "My congrats", originally comes from the gesture of taking off your hat.

WOW!!! That was so powerful, big ups for Tippie sharing that I wish he knew how much that meant to me to hear, I got clean from heroin during lockdown and sober from booze 10 months ago, I also went to rehab and joined the same program Brett did (by the lingo he’s using I’m guessing he’s in AA) but that’s only the start…You then have to deal with life normal and after 20 years of booze and drugs that’s hard. So as I used to ride DH when I was a kid and always followed Rampage and Crankworx even in my darkest times and drug addled mind, I decided to buy a bike and I live on the Shropshire /Welsh boarder which is just awesome for MTB and that hobby has led to meeting people who have really helped me get back on my feet in various different ways. Today I can proudly say I am a recovering addict/alcoholic and without people sharing experiences like these that wouldn’t have been possible. Thanks guys.

Thanks Brett, as a mountain biker and snowboarder in the PNW who followed a similar path, I absolute appreciate you being real about this. Going on 9 years sober and I would never go back to that existence.

Once you see the darkside of consumption you wish you'd never ask, thing is some people need to go there to come back just being told how it's like is not enough.

Tippie and Jason Ellis (Hawk vs Wolf) is the podcast we need to see. I was that guy with the cast iron constution. While it seemed fun for 15 yrs, ultimately it was my downfall. My body could no longer take and I quit everything cold turkey at 30. That cast iron constitution got me through the quitting stage and 20yrs later I'm as strong and charging life as hard as ever. Growing up in surf scene is heavy for drugs and drink, and I worked in an industry that supplied cheap alcohol and paid big coin. A recipe for disaster for the guy that was always the last man standing.

He's right you do break your brain and it takes an age for it to recover (well nearly as it's never quite the same). Play The Tape Forward I had never heard of but it's actually something I have used. I have been clean since 2007 and it's one tough but worthwhile journey. Props to Brett for opening up about this.

💪 Knowing when to say when and willing to help yourself is the 1st. And was this the life I wanted years ago to live. No.., I've been there... Great to hear your Candor. Life is so much more valuable than those fun times. We only own 2 things in our lives. Our Health and Our Words. Keep your temple healthy and sane. Our words are pretty huge..you can't take back your sometimes not thinking side. Glad to hear your Self Actualization.. 💪

BIKE Mag did a photo essay years ago called “ Mums of Mountain Bikers “ or something similar There’s a photo of Brett with his mother standing next to a Specialized BigHit with monsters on the front It must of been around the start of his long journey to recovery

Great episode. Risk taking takes many forms. Im sure there are many "adrenaline sports" stars that would be lost in the party scene if they weren't putting it on the line in healthier ways.
