This is a blessing in disguise. from the last time you showed the top of the block, there was still a lot of material left on the metal. Im pretty sure that needs to be as clean as the new head surface. Otherwise you are going to push that head gasket. Also, should have had that block decked too.

I can't get over how clean my engine was when I took the valve covers off. It's got 200'000 km's on it, but it's got no sludge in it, and barely any colouring. Thanks for showing us this Hert, I was really curious to see if all NA vvti 2jz were as clean as mine

I worked in an engine shop building race engines for historic racing minis and we would use sandpaper wrapped around a big flat file with WD40 to clean the carbon build up off the bottom of the head. Worked a treat and seems easier than what Hert did at 14:00. (look up Swiftune on YT to see the cars racing)

That 12 point 13mm is a half inch drive, find a 3/8 drive 12 point 13mm and a 3/8 torque wrench. Much easier and more useful the grinding down a socket.

Had same issue with 4age arp head studs. Turned out they were 12mm 12pt. If you’re using these, it shows 12mm 12pt too. arp-bolts.com/kits/arpkit-detail.php?RecordID=1156
