Good job. My daughter works at a commercial greenhouse and this is exactly what they do in warmer weather. I would suggest you roll your plastic the other way, toward the inside, so it doesn't catch and hold rain water. Dirt and algae will be a problem if the rolls of plastic are holding water.

Hello, just found your site and I'm from Maryland so i know how the weather has been this year , i like your hi- tunnel every much , will be building one once i to move further south but i have a suggestion for your sides how to roll them up or take them down is to use pvc pipe maybe you can use 1/2" pipe or bigger you'll need two 10' lengths with a sleeve in the middle to hold them together and two end caps to keep critters out and to keep the pipe up on both ends and the middle, take any extra pieces of the pipe cut it in half , cut them to size to hold up the ends and the middle ( you can screw those pieces on the end and the middle on both sides ) then when you want to close it once coller weather comes attach the extra half pieces of pipe on the bottom ( but turn those pieces the opposite way that you have them on top , do you get what i mean? How do you keep the plastic held down in the winter? Does the screw (that holds the rope in place to keep the plastic up) get in the way of keeping the plastic down and possibly puncturing it?
@HomeFreeAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Hi! We have wood strips (I think they are 1x2s) all the way around the hoop house that are screwed in, holding the plastic tight & in place. So far no issues with punctures in the plastic.
@harveyashworth60718 ай бұрын
How do you keep the plastic from ripping at the joint where it’s cut for the roll up side? I’ll be finishing up the greenhouse plastic tomorrow hopefully. I plan to attach the roll up side to a 4 inch board mounted length wise at 36 inches high. I will use a 3/4 inch EMT pipe with plastic clips to secure the plastic to the pipe. I can install baffles as well but am still concerned than it will separate at the cut site over time and use.

Great Videos ! You should put a length of PVC Pipe or a 1x1 at the bottom of the plastic.. then one person could easily Roll it Up from the center !

How long last your plastic on your greenhouse? Thank you for sharing.

Hi Gabriel. The manufacturer says 3-4 yrs depending on the weather where you live. :)

This build looks like it would hold up well in strong winds with very little (if any) improvement.

Hi Scott! So far so good. We’re in VA and we get high winds & tornados here. Cementing the 4 posts into the ground def helps. It’s a sturdy little structure! 😊

Great Video. It looks amazing. Got one question; why is there black netting on the top?
@HomeFreeAlaska3 жыл бұрын
That is a shade clothe. It lowers the temp in the hoop house while still allowing the sun to shine thru for the plants. 😉 We live in a very hot climate, if we didn’t have this in the summer, it would get way too hot in there.

We built a hope house last year and have terrible ventilation. Our plants are in above ground garden boxes. If we did this, think we would need to roll the plastic up to above the level of our produce? Or could we just roll it to the bottom of our garden boxes?
@HomeFreeAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jill! Hm, I’m not sure. I would think that rolling it up just passed the height of the garden boxes would be sufficient as it’s still allowing ventilation. Do you guys have any windows & fans?
@jilll89393 жыл бұрын
@@HomeFreeAlaska just the door and the window at the back with a fan, but it’s too hot in there.
@HomeFreeAlaska3 жыл бұрын
@@jilll8939 yeah we found that with a window in the door at one end of the hoop house & a window at the back…with two fans, one on each end…it really helps circulate that hot air thru. You’d be surprised at how much cooler it is just with that circulation…and then with the roll up sides adding fresh air from outside throughout the day, it cools it down quite a bit. Can y’all put another window & fan in? So you’ll have one on each end, circulating? This is how our hoop house is set up. Now our little “greenhouse” we built, only has one window and one fan in that window and it’s like a sauna 🥵 in there. The circulation is so important or else your just blowing hot air around inside ya know instead of pushing it thru & out.

What temp inside during dead of winter ? Can plants grow all winter ? Thx.

I’ve never checked the temp in the winter. We plant a winter crop every fall with veggies that are hardy & do well in cold temps like cabbage, carrots, broccoli, etc. 😊

I’m not sure exactly which boards you’re talking about, so let me know if I’m off base…but the wood frame is 20ft x 10ft…and the boards we used to make it were 2x4s! 😊 I hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

Tell Joe he did a awesome job. Question... what's the purpose of the netting yall have on the top? Been thinking of building 1 of these. From VA here to... thanks and awesome video
@HomeFreeAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Hey Tommy! So the netting is actually a shade clothe. 😊 It REALLY reduces the inside temp significantly but still allows the necessary sunlight thru that the plants need! 😉 You should totally build one! We are really enjoying this hoop house. 😊 Thanks for watching & thanks for the awesome comment!

Do yourself a favor and use screw’s instead of nails when you will be removing wood and repositioning it. Eventually you will need to replace the plastic sheeting. Nice build. I really love this idea for a greenhouse.

In the summer, how about just propping the door open? Doors on either end. You could roll up the bottom of the plastic, but that may not be as convenient or might cause the whole thing to get loose and wonky, if that's where it's attached. I might try attaching mine in two places so I could raise the bottom. Funny I wrote this before I watched much. Maybe you should batten the plastic to that top piece of wood so it doesn't just come off all the way. Then you can batten it to the bottom in the winter. But it won't unravel in the summer. I'm building something similar right now. And have been thinking about it for awhile / watching videos. I'm hoping I can just open a door on the bottom of one end and open a window on the top of the other and get enough ventilation that way. But I can also just open both doors (I'm imagining doors on both ends - possibly with a lower and upper half like a horse stall. And a window on one side that opens itself based on temperature for days when it needs to be closed some of the time. In the summer, I'll just disconnect that and leave it open. Good idea to get the bug protection. Interesting anyway - my brassica's just aren't viable in the summer. They work early spring and all winter (with some protection) and there's no bugs.
@HomeFreeAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Hi thanks so much for your comment! I don't like to leave the door open because of the bugs and sometimes if our chickens are out there...they'll take full advantage haha! With the front screened door, the screened window in the back and the screened roll up sides...the ventilation was great! Plus the 2 fans circulating the air. We had a wonderful harvest this year. Thanks so much for commenting! :)
