This is an absolutely BRILLIANT concept for a smallish greenhouse, storage building, project shelter, etc. Cattle panels---who knew?!? I need to construct a boatbuilding shed and have been looking at all sorts of plans and materials. This system makes the most sense, for the least money, by far. Moreover I have a friiend who can enclose it with heavy heat-shrink plastic for a tight, perfect fit. Thank you SO much for the idea.

For our tobacco green houses, we put tennis balls on one side of the plastic using a string to tie each ball into the plastic. Then tie a rock to the other end of the strings and throw the rocks over the greenhouse. Now pull in unison and the plastic goes over the greenhouse. If necessary poke the balls up from the inside if they get stuck.

Putting the cattle panels on the two-foot stem walls makes a huge difference in the width and height of your greenhouse. It converts a marginal hoop house to something with plenty of space with only minor concessions to expense. I like it.

I would of suggested to cut a channel out of the edge of the long inner side with a table saw or hand held router, so the metal would flex to timber, not just being held by the U nails. Shouldn't be much of a difference normally, im just thinking of the areas ive lived in, that occasionally get really high winds.

Looks great! Awesome job! Only thing I'd suggest is to add probably 2 internal PVC pipes that form extra support for the roof span. It may be necessary to add support for the length of the hoop house for when snows come because the cattle panels are not strong enough to hold up all that weight in snow. All year long it will be great up to that time and replace the zip ties with something that doesn't degrade from sunlight. It looks great and you guys did an amazing job. Working together and kept the peace at the same time 😁 love it.

I love this design but the snow is my worry too. Winters can be harsh in the upper midwest. How do you suggest I add extra support?
@TheWanderer252711 ай бұрын
@StrewthFroogals You could put 2 supports 4ft from ends with a support beam across top. Kind of like a Y on each end. If you cover it with 1 or 2 sheets of black plastic before storm...you can pull 1 down part way through storm and next day pull last one down and easily remove snow. That's for a 2 day storm....if 3...add 3...

So watching channels like yours is very helpful to get ideas. Thanks for sharing. PS the only thing I would’ve probably done differently on the construction is use screws instead of nails. In my experience in decades of construction nails have a tendency of coming out and also if you do get a tear and you have to fix something on screwing it and screwing it back in is much easier. You guys would’ve saved yourself a little time which screws in a screw gun. You might’ve built in a day and a half instead LOL

I would also add, the wood on the bottom of this is going to rot. I live in east Texas where it's very humid. Wood touching the ground won't last but a couple of years. I'm planning on building this and using brick under the boards so they're off the ground. (I had bought 2 banded cubes of brick at an estate sale a couple of years ago for $50) I also have a ton of pool noodles that I got on a clearance sale for next to nothing that I'll use instead of pipe insulation. Plus I have a huge roll of the plastic I picked up at another estate sale for $5. We have a sawmill and our own lumber, so this project will cost very little. Pretty much just the cattle panels. I didn't think to add the pony walls to raise the height, but I made a two-panel hoop coop very similar to yours. I just made the frame on the ground out of 2x6s. I also used hog rings to hold the panels together because I was concerned that zip ties might break down over years of exposure to the sun's UV rays, and a hog ring was going to last a very long while. Mine was that wide but only two panels long because it was the run for our chickens. I also covered the cattle panels with chicken wire to keep out predators and I went to a company that prints outdoor billboards and got some of their shade cloth that allows the wind to pass through tiny holes so the sign doesn't get torn up by the wind. I had to cut it to size and pound brass grommets into it and then I lashed it in place. Two years later and it is still doing great. My hens get enough light, but there is enough shade that they don't overheat in the summer. In the winter I throw a tarp over it to protect them from the wind and to hold in a little bit of heat for them.

A cattle panel is 16 feet by 50 inches. If you spread the cattle panel 11 1/2 feet, to make a hoop, it will stand 5 feet in the center. When this is mounted on a two foot base, like you have in the photo, it will stand 7 feet. A good general height. If you use extra long posts on the perimeter that stick up 3 feet above the ground, 1 1/2 feet in the hole, you then have a nailer from the inside of the GH. This allows you to place a horizontal 2x4 inside the post, about 6-8 inches above the bottom of the panel. This nicely spreads the panel, side to side so that instead of a 7 foot peak, you have about 7 feet at the peak, not pointy, and the sides of the curve rise up a little so you can walk around near the walls without banging your head!
@prodigirl12 жыл бұрын
I'm trying to visualize "about 6-8 inches above the bottom of the panel". I need pictures LOL!
@prodigirl12 жыл бұрын
Dagaan Galakticos, I was considering your idea and thought to myself, with the extra 1 ft of post above ground I'd have to buy much more 4x4's right? I think i'd have too much scrap wood that'd get wasted. Could I just bury them 1ft in the ground and have 3ft above so as not to have to purchase a lot more 4x4x8's?
@mountainlion70512 жыл бұрын
@@prodigirl1 I was thinking about putting my post 1 foot in the ground as well, this would prevent the wind from picking up the Green house. Hope to start mine next spring, I just got the layout in place.

I was also about to tip this and then say save some plastic to protect the wood on the inside, your foundation 2x4 is touching your soil. This will cause wood rot over time, instead, double line the wood frame at the base so that the inside of it is also plastic lined also. That way the wood never touches water, thus never rotting.

@anatomicallycorrectmuppets81802 жыл бұрын
@@noraplowshay8784 it wouldn’t be. We tried some stuff out here with pallet wood and it rotted very quickly. Our friend used it on her farm and she says she replaces it every year or two
@diannelacasse77832 жыл бұрын
That’s exactly how we did ours, screwed together pallets then used cattle panels for the top. We can roll the plastic up to the top of the pallets in the summer for good air flow and prevent overheating. Because everything was used and basically free our costs to put up a 12’ & 20’ greenhouse was under $30.

You might want to add some cheap lawn chair webbing across the top ever four feet to help the wind from lifting the plastic off. If the sun is to bright spray watered down cheap latex white paint on the plastic.

The wood frame side walls are excellent for extending as full length tables for more planting/seed germination surfaces. You could even have stove jack/stove in there and watch your seeds grow in the winter months with a cup of tea/coffee 😁

I don't normally follow your channel. I don't know what area of the country you live in, but think about wind. It is nice to see young folks doing this sort of stuff. In the Mid West I would cross brace the center. Good job!

Hey Clint! Right now we live in VA & we get pretty bad storms here, even tornados. The hoop house has held up fine! I think being anchored in the way it is with cement helps. 😊 Thanks so much for watching our video!

I’m building one like this this coming week! I love it, my whole deck is packed with grow bags and plants are growing. We can’t enjoy the back deck as far as hanging out grilling. We live on top of a mountain in Pennsylvania and usually are the “fireworks show” (the professional big ones) for our neighbors, but not chancing burning holes on top of plastic. We are also ready for chickens so food is more important these days than our fireworks 🎆 Thank you for posting and sharing with all, you really are such a blessing! Cheryl

Looks good! That's a great way to just build what you need without spending a ton of money. Great result! I would suggest using treated lumber for the bottom boards where it has dirt, compost, and moisture in contact with it. But you did a great job with this.👏👏👏
@HomeFreeAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Yes, we normally use treated lumber for everything we do outside, but the cost of lumber is CRAZY right now. Plus, we retire in 2 yrs and will be moving to our forever homestead, soooooo...it's ok if it only lasts a few yrs lol. Thanks for watching!!!

I have 3 cattle panels and I've been procrastinating building a hoop house. Love your center/plumb method. Also, the extra width and height by raising the sides is really nice. I would have to support the middle due to snow loads, and use the wind straps due to high winds here. But it looks really nice! Just have to make sure the zip ties are uv protected. Those chickens looked like they thought they were going to claim that as their chicken coop. 😄
@HomeFreeAlaska3 жыл бұрын
Haha yes they were! They were trying to make it their own! I agree with you on the modifications for the snow load etc. Thanks for watching! 😉
@mgoh19842 жыл бұрын
Would snow pile up on a rounded roof? Seems to me it wouldn't be able to stick and would slide off.
@prodigirl12 жыл бұрын
I've used UV zip ties for other projects and they get brittle just like the white ones and break. I'm gonna use those hog rings and hog pliers
@joanies677811 ай бұрын
@mgoh1984 It can if you get enough in freezing temps where everything sticks. So far, mine has not had the issue, but I saw another YTer who did have that issue.

couldn't have been better timed. I had just begun thinking along these lines as the best, easiest and cheapest way to put in a support system over our 10x10 deck for the malabar spinach, roses and dutchman's pipe (which has been 3 years in the house and needs to be moved outdoors). This vid is precise and makes clear, with patience, only 2 people are needed to get it done., and done to last! Thanks so much!

Peas are pretty cold tolerant on their own btw. I plant them about the same time as I do potatoes (about st Patrick's day) to climb the garden fence.
@HomeFreeAlaska3 жыл бұрын
We found that the peas didn't like the warmth in the hoop house, we transplanted them outside and they're thriving now. :) Learn as you go right?
@horseblinderson47473 жыл бұрын
Yes peas could be pushed back to valentine's/ground hog day at least with this method, just take the sheeting down eventually or roll up in case of late frost. Can also heat it with compost for those months. Eventually the frame could be the trellis

this gives me such great ideas for a build. having the stub wall foundation is a great idea and would work absolutely perfectly for the height of a raised bed along the sides. my idea would require a bit more lumber but that comes cheap and easy for one who works in the trades. as i say i'd love to have raised beds along the sides in order to have much more control over the soil. probably put a couple off center supports throughout for more snow load where i live, as well as a functional place for hanging baskets and the like. ahh the ideas and rolling in. loved viewing this
