If you haven't figured it out yet, running 12vdc lighting directly from the batteries is far more efficient than converting it to 120vac. The inverter wastes a lot of power as heat. There are tons of 12vdc options in the off-grid, RV and marine lighting worlds.

Yes. We have looked at that. We actually have an excess of energy right now and will be adding more solar, wind and wave generation as we increase our usage. I think we are switching to 48 volt energy production soon. Thanks!

Arguing finished, great jov saving it, please invite your local Ham-radio club for lighthouse weekend, when ham radio opertors go out to as many lighthouses as possible all around the world to set up radios and communicate with each other. Electrical components like wires and switches are rated on maximum voltage and amperage. Switches, relays, breakers etc will normally have a lower rating for DC vs AC power. The only reason you don't want to use larger, higher rated cables than necessary is because copper is expensive, so smaller cable means cheaper. Switches and anything that connects / disconnects electricity by means of a contactor that can arc (spark) react differently to AC and DC power. AC power's voltage dropping to 0 volts 100-120 times per second can break an arc whilst DC will just hold it, leaking power and generating heat which may then cause a fire. 120v light switches SHOULD be more then capable of handling 12v DC led lighting of the capacity needed to light a room, but double check the ratings on the switches to be sure.

The batter jumpers could be larger wire 750 watts divided by 12 volts = 62 amps. Proper wire size on the DC side takes some getting used to. I've been off grid in the redwoods for 38 years. Temporarily, have some 12 volt DC LEDs bypass the inefficiency , and need of a transfer switch for lighting. The tape is a great idea, just be aware that any shadow, even a small taped section, of the PV crystal surface will disable the panel. All those little cells within the panel are in series.

Solar makes complete sense. The water reflects the light so you should have optimum conditions most times. Wind power is Also brilliant for such remote operations. Your key priority should be consolidated marine and RV series battery backups. Today's Solar and wind technologies offer many,many options for piece by piece custom owner built too complete all in one charge,generator,convertor and solar solutions. You would be surprised how much renewable ability you can get for sub 4k. Folks living in their RV's off grid have as little as a few hundred invested and get by reasonably well.

I saw some activity out at Wolf Trap, then this popped up in recommendations. Your solar here, though temporary, leaves a lot to be desired. I hope you put the panels on the south side of the lighthouse. You can run your batteries in parallel up until you get to around 3000 watts, then you'll want to look at running them in series (you'll probably need to change your charge controller and inverter at that point). Saw it mentioned in the comments quite a bit ... look at the RV and boating communities for Solar/Wind appliances, just about anything you would want already has a 12v solution. Then get yourselves a Starlink, might even consider an AIS.

Exactly! We really don’t need more panels because we are only there a day or two per week so the batteries can easily charge while we are not there. Plus we don’t use a lot of power. Just lights at night, charging devices and occasionally a microwave or something. Although we will be adding water pumps, water desalination and some other stuff that will use a good amount of power so like I said 800 amp hours would be nice. 3:01 basic mistake here, converting 12v to 120v so you can light up led that could perfectly work with 12v... I strongly advise you to consider staying in 12v, it's cheaper, safer, simpler. You can find almost anything you want in 12v instead of 120... Just look on the Van life side. And you an keep the 120v cable system with 12v it work fine with light load (under 100/200 watts for 1.5 electric wires).

In my world you would be fitting those solar panels to the north side of the building but im guessing that you fitted them to the south side of your lighthouse. Question? Why are you fitting an inverter to run lights etc at 120vAC and not just running 12vDC LED lights, pumps and phone chargers which are far more efficient, Then run an inverter for the big items that run best on AC?

The ocean isn't a sudden drop off 500 metres aware from the coast line. What you see on land, exists underwater. Except that you can't see it because it's underwater. And depending on the tidal range of the area and exact obstacles, they may be above water part of the time, or always just below the water. There are some obstacles that present zero danger at high tide, but a huge risk at low tide.

You might want to look into purchasing Interstate Batteries size 8-d . 450 hrs reserve capacity @ 25 amps. I have used them on my larger boats and I swear by them. Interstate batteries last longer than any other battery that I have ever used in over 60 years of being in boating. They're a little pricey probably $300 each but they last for a long long time and they have more capacity each than two of yours so it winds up to be a bargain. Good luck

Try tesup they have 7kw wind turbines that can sit on top of roof ideal around £1250 for full set not including batteries and cable but all controllers etc are in. Plus you wired the batteries wrong positive goes to negative on second battery then you have a positive on one battery and negative on the other to connect your solar panels otherwise

I would recommend that you hook a trickle charger up to the batteries and keep it plugged into the generator that way anytime you’re using the generator. You can also charge your batteries it will not affect the performance and will not change how much gas you use when you’re using machinery because it’s such a small amount.
@teeanahera8949
@teeanahera8949 Жыл бұрын
A DC to DC charger would be better. All beside the point though, those batteries get charged every day while they’re not there. He said this is temporary so it’s ridiculous to start making more work out of it.
@jerrygaguru
@jerrygaguru Жыл бұрын
12v to 12v would not be good, Until you have a good lightning rod in place. I would disconnect the solar panels when you're not there. When you are there, you're probably finding. You need to add a trick or charge, especially on cloudy days. You've dropped a 100 foot stinking corridor over the side of the lighthouse and plug it in as needed when you're on-site. Using electricity from both sources. Those batteries really need to be trickled. Charge not twelve volt chathe same as the solar panels do.

For the money you spent, you could’ve built a much more efficient solar system. Traditional solar panels cost around $1 per watt. For $600 you could’ve gotten some high efficiency solar panels that produced around 600W of power.

You should look into a gasifier, it will run a massive generator on wood pellets
@35manning
@35manning Жыл бұрын
And where is a light house going to obtain wood pellets? The same boat that brings petrol / diesel fuel for a regular generator? A septic biogas generation system would make more sense, HOWEVER they produce limited amounts of gas based on occupancy levels and do require regular "refuelling" or the living bacterias producing the gas can die. Solar, wind and hydro / wave power generation make lots more sense.
@thelighthousecenters
@thelighthousecenters Жыл бұрын
Yep. I appreciate the recommendation but we will have more power than we need with solar and wind without bringing out fuel by boat. On a scale of 1 to 10 it’s probably a 9 location for wind 70 feet above the water. Will generate almost 24/7/365
