It's so sad that the 2 babies were starved to death, but it's how nature works. Survival of the strongest. The ones that hatched last were too small to compete for food.

How does it go down from 8 babies to 6 and then from 6 to 5?

@cf5053 Sadly, 3 chicks have passed away. There are 5 of them left. Let's hope they will all manage to survive until the fledging day. It is the Hoopoes' survival strategy to lay more eggs so that more chicks could survive. It was raining, not warm enough and the food was probably not enough for all the chicks. Oh, so they passed away in the nest. I didn't know if a predator came and took them or something. So then what happens to their bodies? Do the parents take them out of the nest?

@cf5053 Hoopoes have the following strategy: they lay a lot of eggs and the chicks which hatch the last can become food for the older ones if there is not enough food for every chick. It was the case in here too.
