@MUFC Saying soccer is the most popular sport in the world is like saying rice is the most popular food. It's popular because all you need is a wadded ball of trash to start a game. If you stumble on a real ball, even better. You don't need anything specific like in other sports. Just because it's the most widespread doesn't make it the best.
@celebrim1
@celebrim1 3 жыл бұрын
@MUFC What the heck has to do with this movie? Do you have any idea just how much of a jerk you come off as. Look, I grew up in Jamaica, so I know how big your "football" is. I played it myself all the way up through high school. I go watch my local professional team play. But the truth is, while association football is the most popular sport on the planet, it's really the most popular sport of only about 1/3rd of the planet. Australian rules football is more popular in Australia. Rugby football is more popular in New Zealand. Gaelic Football is more popular in Ireland. Cricket is more popular in India. Ping pong is more popular in China. Baseball is more popular in Japan and in Venezuela. It's really bizarre to me how small minded and fragile soccer fans are. If the sport is so good, why are you so damn threatened by people liking other sports. Heck, I like soccer more than basketball, but this is a good and important movie about America, small towns, basketball, and being successful at life. It's beautiful. Why the heck are you threatened by that? In the United States, we have not one but four big traditional sports, each of which has a sporting league bigger than every soccer league on the planet except the EPL (and the EPL is only bigger than the NHL, it doesn't come close to the NBA or the NFL). This proves that there is room enough on the planet for more than one sport and that you don't have to be a fan of just one sport. The world is bigger than that. I feel pity for you being so small minded that you are threatened by the mere existence of other sports.
@celebrim1
@celebrim1 3 жыл бұрын
@@randyp8849 No it's not you idiot. The Italians for example call it 'Calcio', which translates to 'kickers'. In Indonesia they call it 'Sepak Bola' or 'kick ball'. In Ireland, because 'football' traditionally refers to Gaelic Football, they call it soccer which they also do in Canada and Australia.
@celebrim1
@celebrim1 3 жыл бұрын
@@randyp8849 First of all you small minded little snot, you didn't say "the majority of the world calls it football". You said you son of a liar that "it’s called football by the rest of the world". You aren't even manly enough to own up to your own words. And second of all, even with your "correction", you are still wrong. It's called soccer in Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Ireland, Japan, Namibia, Lesotho, New Guinea, New Zealand, the Philippines, Palau, Kiribati and yes, also the USA, Canada, and Australia. And that's to not even get into the nations that call it something other than football or soccer. That's a bit more than 3 nations if you can count, and in any event if you really did know that it was called soccer in at least 3 countries in the world, why did you lie and say, "it’s called football by the rest of the world"? You don't even have the grace to be embarrassed about being a liar. Heck, I just assumed you were speaking in ignorance, but if you were speaking in malice and proud of it, that makes you even worse.

Hayden Wolfe ... I'm with you, Hayden. Great b-ball movie. Great performance by Gene Hackman. Coach reminds me a lot of my H.S. coach. We were a small school, about 825 students total. We had good, smart ballplayers. But we had no height. 6' 3" at Center, 6' 3" at Forward, 6' 2" at the other forward and 2 5' 11" guards. We were extremely well conditioned and smart, very few turnovers and tight "D". We made it to the State Quarter Finals and almost pulled off a major upset. Anyway .... how I loved our team.

I rate this movie right up there with "Twelve O'Clock HIgh" as far as lessons in management skills. When faced with a bully or a self-appointed narcissist, you have to establish who is in charge. Early. Clearly. Expect trash talk. Don't retaliate. And, later in this scene, if faced with any inattentive malcontents, throw them off the team. Early. Clearly.

Everyone forgets that a town meeting was called to fire the coach. He only kept his job when the star player said that he would only join the team and play if the coach is allowed to stay. They didn't give him a vote of confidence. They didn't defend his performance of his duties. They didn't even say hey that's a really bad way to try to fire a coach and teacher.

If Norman Dale had any motive coming to Hickory, it was for self-redemption due to how his previous coaching tenure ended which he made no excuses for. But as the coach he was entitled to coach his way, not conform to the town tradition and demand the respect of the players. One of the greatest coaches ever in movie history.

What's hilarious is Gene Hackman hated making this movie, and thought it was going to ruin his career. They said he was one of the biggest jerks on set which he actually is notorious for being.. because he really believed he was done. There's a scene where Hackman and Hopper are cutting up together and it was because Hackman was telling hopper that they might as well retire now because they won't find another movie after this one. Amazing how it turned out lol

Gene Hackman didn't give this movie a chance at all and thought it would wreck his and the director's careers. Funny. In my top ten sports movies ever and that includes other amazing films. The Goldsmith music track is top notch also. Add to it all that for us around in the mid 80s that was about as good a time as anyone of us will ever see. Current day, well, sucks. Here's a toast to our former freedoms!....

I wonder if there was a deleted scene where one of the players that quit came back. Because they have six players for the first game and then they have seven players in the second game.?It’s never explained where the new player came from Like when the Jimmy kid tells everyone he’s going to start playing again

The next scene after this one shows two kids clowning around and not paying attention to the coach while he is talking. He tells them to leave. One of the guys said, "Let's go play for Terhune." They both leave. A few days later, one of kids shows up with his dad, and the dad says the kid has something to say to Dale. The kid begs to get back on the team, swearing he will behave, and is reinstated. I always wondered if the kid who went to Terhune was pissed off that he didn't get a state championship.

I like that early on, Norm is rude. As a kid, I puzzled about why I was supposed to like a character who could have been nicer to George. It's part of his character...he had already been fired for punching one of his own players. While his training ideas are interesting, that doesn't mean that he's always right, and throughout the film, his antagonistic attitude gets him in trouble. That's partially why this movie is so great and Gene Hackman rules.

Why should Norm have been expected to be nicer to George? George was being a complete a-hole until the team started winning with Jimmy at the helm, then he became Mr. Bandwagon. George deserved every bit of rudeness Norm handed out and then some.
