The Monon Line was an old railroad, which had its convergence point at Monon, Indiana, hence its name. The train station ran to most of the college towns in Indiana, and could run northward to Chicago or southward to Louisville. When the old coach talks about the "pine rail," he basically threatens to run Hackman's character out of town. In my hometown, which is one of the college towns, the line that the Monon ran on is now a walking trail.

I was a teenager when this movie was made and I was there all four nights they filmed the final game at Hinkle Fieldhouse. I can see myself several times in the background, including where I walked right behind the players during a timeout. I also got to run on the floor when he made the final shot. The first take they told us to run out and celebrate even if he missed the shot. He nailed it. We filed the students rushing the floor four times. It was so much fun.

Yes, also the actor said he was so nervous he just focused on shooting and wasn’t even listening to Gene Hackman. Him missing his only shot after Coach Dale says he didn’t care if he played was a happy accident - the kind that seem to happen for great films sometimes.

Until 1998, the Indiana state basketball tournament was "open class," where any small school could beat a big school. You didn't have designations like 1A, 2A, 3A, etc. It was the closest thing to March Madness that you had in high school, and "Hoosier Hysteria" was an appropriate name. The final year of "open class" basketball, in 1997, my high school ended up winning the state title (I wasn't at that school yet, but I was a few years later). Hickory High School was based on a real high school, called Milan High School, located in a town called Milan, in the southeastern part of the state. It has 1,823 people as of the 2020 census. In 1954, when they won the state title, they only had about 1,000 people in the town, and 161 students at the high school. To this day, it remains the smallest high school ever to win the state title in Indiana. They defeated the much larger and heavily favored Muncie Central High School in the state title game, winning the game at the buzzer. They played the game at Hinkle Fieldhouse, home of Butler University, and Butler later became runner up in the NCAA Tournament in two consecutive years, 2010 and 2011.

This is based loosely on a true story of Milan winning the IHSAA state title. HS basketball in Indiana is gigantic, including most of the biggest gyms in the US. 1997 was the last one class state tournament.

Dennis Hopper's first scene was when he walked into the game roaring drunk. Before the scene, he asked the director to give him 10 seconds or so before he called action. Hopper twirled like a dervish, making himself dizzy. He learned that trick from James Dean (who used it, I believe, in the banquet room scene in Giant).

According to the DVD commentary, Wade Schenck (Ollie) was actually the best shooter on the team. Wade's sister Libbey plays the blonde Hickory cheerleader.

Unfortunately, the studio made them cut the movie to under 2 hours. Because of that, A LOT of Barbara Hershey and Gene Hackman chemistry build up was cut (As well as how Buddy made it back on the team). Remember how Buddy quit?...then mysteriously he's back on the team? Buddy's apology was cut.

The actor who played Jimmy was an actual college basketball player. That's why he's so good. He was a real hooper. Also, I've seen multiple games in the gym where they played the state championship. It's Butler University's home gym - wonderful place to see a game. The floor glows in the afternoon because of the huge windows, unbelievably beautiful.

@@borisbalkan707True. He went to a big high school and just wasn’t fast enough to make the team. Steve Hollar, who played Rade, was the college player. He also won a state championship, so he helped the other actors with what that was like.

All right! Love seeing Gene Hackman and Dennis Hopper in a movie together! You've done two out of the three "comeback" films Hopper did that year! "The River's Edge" is a particularly creepy 80s true crime thing. You don't get Gene Hackman with Dennis Hopper.....but you get Crispin Glover in HIS greatest performance! (and also Keanu Reeve's film debut, doing what he does best: just playing a dude, a dude without a British accent. 😄

A few days ago I ranted about football hooligan films. To balance the rant I mentioned a bunch of classic British films I'm proud of, including the Full Monty. I felt like it's a much forgotten British classic that deserved more attention. Then this morning I see Disney have made an entire new TV series of it, with the original cast including it's main star Robert Carlyle. I guess it's not as forgotten as I thought. So it's even more worth reacting to the original than ever boys lol. (If you haven't seen it) Great reaction as always. Its nice watching movies with grown ups. The kids channels are fun. But you two relax me. Kudos.

Do you guys think because of Hackman’s retirement that he became overlooked as one of the best actors of his generation? He didn’t have the stardom of an Eastwood but damn if he doesn’t own a scene every time he is in one.

One amazing thing is Gene Hackman wanted off this movie and thought it was gong to be a disaster. He was a pain on the set and didn’t start to settle down until Dennis Hopper arrived to film his scenes, as he respected having another veteran actor there. After principal wrapped, Hackman returned to loop some dialogue and saw a rough cut with David Anspaugh (the director). According to Anspaugh, when it was over Hackman turned to him and said in amazement “how the *#%! did you do that?”

That was nicely edited, but you should watch the whole movie. Or did you see all of it before you chopped it up? Not really fair for you guys to comment because it doesn't really play well any more. No non-stop F words, no gun battles. They even had to fill Hinkle Fieldhouse with real people at the end because they had no computer effects to make an instant crowd. Boring by today's standards. It had major flaws even in 1986, especially all the scenes they edited out that built the sexual tension, but it was pretty good overall. You should find videos of the producer and director talking about it, and hear what Barbara Hershey thought, too. Oh, and remember, 1950's basketball was a lot difference from today's style of play, and yeah, high school basketball was a really big deal to those small towns. Overall, your reactions were pretty great. Thanks for making this video.🙂

Not trying to sound nasty but if the assistant coach walks out on the floor and stops the game, it's a technical foul. All old-time basketball players shot free throws two handed, although Larry Bird still did it that way even in the NBA. He said it is more accurate. And it "was" stop the presses in Indiana when it came to high school basketball. It was very important until the end of the 1 class ball system which ended after 1997. It's not like that anymore here these days. Shooter was written in to break a window to escape and get to the game but Dennis Hopper told the director that having been a real drunk, that it would be wrong. That we have to live with the actions that dictate what happens in our lives. Side note: I was in the extras crown for the title game at Butler Fieldhouse. The kid playing Jimmy must have missed 25 to 30 practice shoots for the win and no one thought he would make it when the camera was rolling. Although they did several slow motion shots to build the drama for the winning shot, the full play of Jimmy's winning shot really did go in, which made the whole gym explode and people ran on to the court reacting out of the full excitant.

There is an argument that ‘sexual tension’ would have gotten in the way of them having a relationship based on realistic expectations of no other possibilities.
