CLIP DESCRIPTION:
With seconds left on the clock, Ollie (Wade Schenck) sinks two underhand free throws and wins the game.

Facing resentment from the community and the team itself, Hackman manages to inspire his young athletes, leading them to the state championship with the help of the assistant coach (Dennis Hopper), who happens to be a recovering alcoholic.

The guy who played Ollie was actually the best natural basketball player in real life. He had to do some real acting to be the worst on the team in the film... I love it how the coach sets the mental tone by saying, “after Ollie makes his second free throw.” How perfect was it that it dramatically bounced around the rim before it went in? You can’t plan things like that; sometimes a movie is just destined to be great!

Jimmy Johnson, coach of Dallas Cowboys was famous for using positive reinforcement rather than negative. He once said he never would say "Don't fumble the ball", he didn't want to put that negative thought in a player's mind. In stead he would say "Keep the ball high and tight". He knew something about psychology as Gene Hackman (Coach) demonstrates here.

This is definitely my favorite movie of all time, my Dad and I went on a road trip to Indiana and we saw the “Hoosier Gym” the best experience ever, my Dad also found this gym in the video, we were wondering how to get in this gym when we arrived to this gym and we found a very kind man who let us in this gym, we shot around for a while and we’re just in complete shock on how we were actually in a gym from our favorite movie and how we weren’t even supposed to be in there! Amazing!!

In 2000 I coached girls basketball at a small private Christian School and we had the same thing happen. We only had 8 players on the team and with three girls fouling out, I put in Rachel who was a Freshman and typically scared to death when she had to play. Although she had some talent. We were down by one with 2.2 seconds left in a hard fought game and Rachel was fouled attempting a shot. The other team called time out and Rachel had the deer in the headlights look. I knew I had to calm her down and I remembered this scene. I prayed that she didn't see the movie, and I stole the lines verbatim. She immediately looked more relaxed and sunk both free throws. I even started yelling "just one more" like Gene Hackman after she hit her first. She told her parents what I said during the time out and her father caught me after the game and said, "wasn't that from the movie Hoosiers." We both chuckled and I said that was all I could think of.

As an 8 man football coach I feel this story. I played my smallest athlete at WR one game and the opponent was dumb enough to play their best athlete on them. After racking up 72 points playing 7 v 7 that still wasn't enough. Called a naked reverse to said smallest athlete and he went untouched for a 30 yard touchdown to win the game. Small school varsity sports are so fun

It wasn't about that team. It was a film adapting that had some similarity to that season. I suspect almost nothing about it was similar to that team. They didn't make it specifically to honor it. It might have been inspired by it.

I turn 53 in a week. I would give just about anything to wake up in the morning one more time with that anxiousness and excitement I would feel on a game day. And I am not talking the state semifinal kind of game. I mean, just the way I felt in the middle of September when we were on the road that day, or in the first week of April when I knew I was starting that night, but pitching in the snow. How sweet those times were back then. I was so happy. And everything mattered so much more.

Such an awesome scene. Also realistic that even though he coaches his players to get back on defense after the second free throw, his young players collectively get lost in the moment of excitement and celebration, and subsequently almost fumble away the game by forgetting to get back on "d."

Yeah that can be a challenge to be sure. But if you remember it wasn't really about tye ideal head coach. It was about a coach who learned too late to appreciate the good things life has to offer each and everyone. A mistake most coaches make is focusing on the result. I played sports. Winning didn't define who I was. I mostly hated sports for that reason. It's part to a whole. Winning is the objective but sport is to be grateful for the experience regardless. I think that's what matters. Winning a championship is gravy. It isn't everything. Not even close. I pretty much hated school.
