I grew up in Henderson, Nv. so close to Hoover Dam--I have seen the movie on making the actual dam as well as the engineering behind it--TOTALLY YEARS BEFORE ITS TIME!! So amazing!!! I have taken many tours down into the dam--our neighbor escorted tours on the weekends!!! I was is awe of it as a little child and I am still as an adult!!! I am 61 now and have not been to the dam in 33 years. There is no doubt it is a wonder it was ever completed---my grandkids could not believe men actually hung by ropes and no A/C or cell phone were used!! Their Grandpa retired to Boulder City and showed them the dam---they were 4 and 6 and a bit intimidated--as we all should be at this amazing wonder!!! The great men that actually did the manual labor are heros' in my book!!!

@@BlueInOrangeAgain While I normally let it slide. Cush Yadav made a statement that cannot stand and stated his credentials to back up his statement. It is you tube etiquette to copy the OP's form in the reply thus Travis correctly stated his credentials. One might therefore ask you: Why attack a teacher? You ask: what is inaccurate? Certainly the expression "beautifully explained" is subjective. I feel it was dumbed down for STEM and diversity candidates. The pace was WAY too slow and ultimately it contained only a brief overview, NOT the promised clickbait secrets. 1:00 His first drawing of compression and tension was "inaccurate". While the engineering lesson was somewhat correct his exaggerated drawing clearly showed BOTH sides in elongation. He claimed that cool water in the pipes 6:23 quote: "set the concrete quickly and easily". NO it slows the set not quickens it. He further makes it sound like the water was stopped as soon as the set took place but (of course) the concrete was cooled for months to slow curing. He also forgot to mention THE SECRET that they used ice in the mix to reduce heat in the concrete further slowing the set. His pictures show blocks he calls 50X50. The illustration suggests they were 50X50X50, but the lifts on this job were 2 ~ 4 inches at a time. In hindsight it is believed that the block staggering ultimately had little to no affect on even cooling because of the ambient temperatures and direct sun. Fun fact: There are parts deep inside of the hoover dam that are still not completely cured 86 years later. The myth that dead workers were entombed without anyone knowing is false. The concrete was poured 2 ~ 4 inched at a time.

@SARCAPITAL you would most definitely been working with some insufferable individuals who would expect you to be like "one of them" in order to be accepted amongst their ranks. That's how it worked in the coal industry. As a foreman / engineer, you're expected to hunt and fish and own a collection of "Rredneck toys", such as 4 wheelers and boats and a 70,000 dollar pickup truck for hauling air around... They expect you to like country music (BARRRFFF), suck ass to certain bosses, be related to a multitude of individuals within the company, place work over God and family; for, it is THEY who are your God and your family. The non-believers replacement is but a phone call away, and thanks to the chicken shit "at will" clause governing management employees, they can terminate you for such a reason. And they expect you to spy on other workers who are drawing workers compensation, especially the union workers. And you better not be afraid to let some safety go out the window. Shutting the belt line down because you spot 3 rollers that have seized up and are starting to burn the conveyor belt isn't a good enough reason to shut down for 20 minutes to replace them. Shut downs for necessary maintenance cuts into the shifts foreman's production bonus he receives every quarter. But get caught letting such violations go... that shift foreman WILL NOT go to bat for you, neither. They'll just make you out to be a liar and a trouble make before the federal inspectors of MSHA if an investigation takes place. Saying you're "new" doesn't help either Now, that's a most extreme case. But I guarantee you other engineering and labor-related companies out there operate the same way. So be at ease to known that you at least got to avoid some of that I mentioned

I'm always interested in knowing more about this dam's construction. My great Uncle was killed, working in one of the water diversion tunnels. Many workers lost their lives, assuring that we would have water and power for the future of towns like Los Angeles. His brother died while working on the installation off gas lines to Downtown Los Angeles. Another family member was the last mule skinner (20 mule team driver) that cut through the hills to build the roads that are now the 60 and 10 freeways.

Savage truly put forth a great plan, but anyone in construction knows it was the guys on the ground and experts in their own fields that really made this work. Their are so many variables and issues that he alone couldn’t have addressed and were solved by every day blue collar workers

@davidreynolds731
@davidreynolds731 2 жыл бұрын
@@shard_dnb well a small example would be the excavation of the rock, it’s easy for an engineer to say “yeah jut cut this shape out in the side of the mountain”. But there are guys who have spent their entire lives working explosive mining, learning from generations of guys who have perfected it over their lifetime. Those guys are experts in their field and know exactly how to get it to break and fall where they want it safely and efficiently, something the engineer would have no idea how to accomplish. Or the water pipes in the concrete, there are guys who have spent their entire lives working with concrete and know exactly how to get the concrete to cure without stress cracks and such, easy for an engineer to draw some pipes on a plan and say we’re gonna cool it with water as if cures, something totally different to get in their and design a system to do it effectively. Something again a engineer just doesn’t have the experience to do on his own.
@shard_dnb
@shard_dnb 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidreynolds731 They didn't spend "lifetime" working explosive mining and they didn't "learn from generations"... Dynamite was invented only 64 years before the construction began in 1931. The experts working with dynamite are not "blue collar workers"... They are engineers who calculate where to put the explosives and how much of it to use. I get what you are trying to do - appreciate the "little guy" - the blue collar worker. It's true they did all the hard work, some even died there. But the claims you are making? You are reaching. Your next point mentions the cooling pipes... But those are in the blueprints. You can actually google the original blueprints. The engineers designed it, the workers just followed the lead. I am pretty sure Savage wasn't the only one, there were most likely many more engineers (experts) working for him. Those are the people who solved all the "variables and issues" as you called it. If you want to keep pushing these opinions, we are going to have to agree to disagree. I am out of here, not going to respond again, these are just youtube comments anyway, there is nothing to be gained from this debate... Have a nice day, bye! 🙂

A fascinating - and well-explained - documentary. Having visited the Dam in 1993 and then November 2019 (at which time we gazed down into the empty space where the water used to be), it is clear that the Hoover Dam currently gives the southwester US states a bit of breathing space to moderate their water consumption before the desert returns. The 1983 "full-pool" use of the spillways to dump overflow water is now a distant memory.

Much of the engineering behind the dam was developed by A. J. Wiley in various concrete dams in Idaho and Eastern Idaho. Wiley taught these techniques to Savage during the construction of Arrowrock Dam northeast of Boise, Idaho and was a consulting engineer for Hoover. Wiley is among the most influential engineers in American history, yet, no one seems to know his name. A. J. This is amazing. Very nice video and thank you for the effort put into this. I have visited the Boulder/Hoover Dam 6 times over the years. I worked in Las Vegas at DOE and I would often drive out to see the dam. My first visit in 1985 I was able to take the 'Hard Hat' tour. The tour allowed guests to go down to the turbines and see the amazing work in the tunnels and to see the turbine shafts spinning out of the turbine case and up to the generators. An added benefit was a turbine was removed and was sitting on wooden beams near the parking area. The overhead crane and pulley system did that job perfectly. The copper buss bars were still in place from each generator but not used anymore according to the dam guide. The visitor center was not constructed in 1985 so it was a thrill to go back in the 90's and early 2000's to see progress on the dam. A few years ago the butterfly or needle valves were opened only once to do repairs or maybe it was to install new valves. I can't seem to find a video of that day on You Tube but I do remember seeing the video somewhere a few years ago. I live near Lake Texoma (3 miles) and recently the intake structure was modified with new 19ft by 9ft gates each weighing 26 tons. The Denison Dam has only 2 Westinghouse generators rated at 40 Mw. The Denison Dam was built between 1938-1944 and was the only large civil project funded during WW2. One of the Francis Turbines was pitted and removed and now sits in the parking area and is painted with a fence around it for visitors to look at. A worker told me each turbine weighed 80 tons at Denison Dam. As a Boy Scout in the 1960's I got the chance to tour the powerhouse and was the reason why I became an electrical engineer and worked around the world on complex communication systems. I'm retired now but I sure do love watching videos like this one. Good job.

The Chevy Chase movie "Vegas Vacation" showed several of the tunnels when Clark Griswald got "lost" during the tour. Apparently this was one of the first major construction projects where hard hats were mandatory, and this apparently saved countless lives. Funny thing to note: the tallest 'towers' above the face of the dam itself (not the water intake towers behind it), are where the toilets are located for tourists. Very art deco styled inside, when I was there 20 years ago. Hopefully it still is.

I saw in a documentary that the workers on the dam fashioned hard hats out of tar. They were grossly underpaid.

I have visited this amazing dam in 2019 my friend almost got killed by a falling rocks. This rocks were so big that we joked he should have played lottery that day. So I fully agree with the fact that hard hats must have saved many lives.

Old style hard hats are terrible, we need computer hats with WI-FI, cell phone charger & lights.

My serious respect to these 96 workers who were sacrificed to this magnificent man-made project, their contribution is invaluable!

what are you talking about 96 workers that were sacrificed? This is what happens when people in india just create content without proper knowledge and research. Car driving on wrong side 9:32, some myth about workers sacrifice their lives etc. Even indian don't trust to learn from indian. They always want to learn from white. 100% ask any indian, they will not respect knowledge of indian why? What do you think is the reason? But they respect to learn from white. What do you think is the reason?

Agreed. Not to mention the time frame they did this in under the conditions in which they worked. People who have never worked construction just cannot relate. This is an absolute amazing project indeed...
