Victor Hanson is one my intellectual mentors, thank you for these pieces. With regard to the teaching of the Classics - to study the Classics is ultimately a study of Power...how it is used and how it is abused. It's a damming shame that the access to this knowledge is possibly being denied to future students and it is imperative people generally take the time to seek out and familiarize themselves with them. I feel that the attack on the Classics is an attack on true empowerment and enlightenment, and of course only serves those who want an unquestioning, pliable pool of 'human resource', and ultimately abused by Power.

6:25 Hanson: "If a person takes Greek and Latin and they understand the grammar and the syntax and the composition, they are innately better writers of English."
@threethrushes5 ай бұрын
The utility of learning Latin, in particular, as a native English-language speaker, is three-fold: - a vast number of English words have Latin roots; - Latin was the lingua franca of the civilised world for centuries; - it gives us an insight into Roman history and culture. Understanding the grammar of any foreign language will make one more skilled in one's mother tongue.

Innately? That's a shocking solecism for a classicist. It reminds me of the Clown in a Winter's Tale: Clown: ...try whether I am not now a gentleman born. Autolycus. I know you are now, sir, a gentleman born. Clown. Ay, and have been so any time these four hours.

In 1980 I quit prep. school, Brooks in North Andover, Mass. My two years of study of Koine Greek and Latin profoundly affected my religio-political worldview. After I had left school, some months later I was in the library in Lowell, Mass. and they were having a Book Sale. I found half-dozen or more books in various Greek dialects and bought them for--and I'm guessing--a quarter or a dime or a buck--I don't remember how much, and drove with my girlfriend out to Brooks and brought them to Mr. Poirot. It never occurred to me then but looking back it is clear that the library was being purged of Western Judeo-Christian culture. Have you ever noticed that libraries are always staffed by Fascist liberals who are frequently homosexual or lesbian? You have to give the Fascists credit for sticking with a plan diligently. They've moved into Academia and the Judicial System, Hollywood and other Entertainment Industries purposefully.

I agree with what Prof. Hanson has to say about the value of the classics. But the classics were in deep trouble for a generation before the far left took over the university. The death knell for the classics was the emphasis on career education as it infiltrated most all academic environments. There was no way in the 70s and 80s many university students would take any interest in classical languages as expected earlier in the 20th century. Business, sociology, psychology were the programs of choice. Further classical languages were seen as time consuming obstacles for the intense study of the sciences. "Wokeism" simply followed trends all well in place.

Free markets rely on the free expression of ideas, the free exchange of labor and capital, and free access to markets. All the wealth and prosperity we observe in the world is a result of freedom of people to create and consume goods, services and ideas. Free competition in the marketplace ensures only the best goods, services and ideas are retained in the future while improvement is continuous. Wokeness seeks to level the playing field, so that goods, services and ideas that would otherwise be eliminated are retained, and the result is a decrease in the prosperity that would otherwise be attained. The utopia wokeness seeks to attain is prevented by the restrictions placed on those segments of the population which have the most to contribute to the improvement of society. Not only is the morally wrong, but it is economic madness.

I had a class of American Pacific Islanders I was supervising. It was a US elementary school. They liked my accent and asked where I came from. I told them I came from an island, and I started comparing my island to the ones their parents came from. They loved it. And I showed them a map. My island was the UK. I told them about how we mined and built ships and came over to see them. They were shocked that we didn't grow oranges or grow tea or sugar and we were on the hunt for them. I told them about the weather and where our different islands were situated. Their teacher told me to teach them from her book which was utterly boring. I did what I was told, and the kids cried. What a witch that woman is. Never went back to the school. Same when I read about the old animal folk tales and the Greek myths. I was seen as a colonialist from the old school. What I found so heart breaking is that they may know the popular entertainers of the day are but can't feed souls when needed by thinking no matter how bad things are remember Leonidas and a general fromm WW ll. If you don't surrender we will darken the skies with our arrows and Leonidas replyed. . .Good then we will fight in the shade. And an American General who was told to surrender replyed . . NUTS. Often times I thought youe were an elitest and discovered I was also because I was blessed by parents and teachers who valued reading and thinking and passed it on to mee and hope it was passed on to some of my students. You would be surprised th know we had a rarities in little old Hanford,Ca. Maybe someday I'll ite how Leila Lisle taught third graders t . . .United we stand. Divided we fall. Where are those teachers today. Teachers who can convince students that all history is important. Good or bad. Let me give you another hint on why Hitler shouldn't be forgotten but remembered for what should not be allowed again. When Putin let it be known he was invading the Ukraine it immediately brought back memories of Litist. You kno the famous saying . . Those who don't study history are bound to repeat it. Спасибо thank you.
