I am a 47 years old adult learner and I even think Mr. Sowell is a rock star. I get it, I am finally getting it. My decision to obtain a higher education has broadened my mind and even change my heart in some ways. And Mr. Sowell is a major contribution of that factor. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Sowell is one of the most brilliant thinkers of this modern era. His insight is backed by data, presented in a way in which average bums like me can understand but not put forth in a condescending way. He would be a professor I would gladly pay money to take a class from and feel privileged for the opportunity to debate and learn from.

You won't be sorry you found him, although you may be bleary-eyed! Check out his books. They are very readable. And find the young Sowell in Friedman's still-timely series, "Free to Choose".

Indeed, that's what happens when you start listening to Dr Sowell, it's now about 00:30 after midnight and I should have gone to bed way before midnight, and I still want to listen to another interview before going to bed. But I've got to go...Dr Sowell leaves you questioning the way you look at the world. Long Live Dr Sowell! To call him a Rockstar is an understatement because you cannot compare him with any rockstar, my opinion.

The easy answer is because of the work he does... He has not "discovered" a new aspect of Economics, much of what he talks about was talked about by Mises, Hayek, et.al. He does so in a brilliantly simple way, which puts him above them in many aspects, but ultimately is not "new." The hard answer involves the before bit, and a little bit of what StephenNu9 said, He "doesn't have the right political views," up to and including, not being interested in winning one... Remember, Hitler, Obama and Paul Krugman have all won one. And there is a point were an organization whose job it is to honor excellence looses credibility. The Hugo awards have been working on that heavily for years.

That explains why 95% of blacks voted for Obama twice having no clue who he really was! I have respected Dr. Thomas Sowell since the late 1970's. He is an amazing intellect, and a genuinely good person. I've heard him speak on race relations, the economy, and the political arena. He is usually correct, so I listen when he speaks.
