Recorded on April 1, 2019.
How did blue-collar voters connect with a millionaire from Queens in the 2016 election? Martin and Illie Anderson Senior fellow Victor Davis Hanson addresses that question and more in his newly released book, The Case for Trump. He sits down with Peter Robinson to chat about his motivation to write a book making a rational case for those voters who chose Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton.
Hanson and Robinson, the Murdoch Distinguished Policy Fellow, discuss how voters connected with Trump’s “personal authenticity” during the campaign and how the media has a “historical amnesia” of the bad behavior of past presidents when talking about President Trump. The president, Hanson argues, was always an outsider from elite society in Manhattan, which helped him to better to connect with voters who felt like outsiders. He analyzes President Trump’s platform agenda, which was composed 80% of traditionally conservative views with the remaining 20% being radical ideas that fit with many of the views of the midwestern states. He breaks down why, in the end, Jeb Bush, Ted Cruz, and John Kasich didn’t appeal to voters in the way that Trump managed to.
Hanson turns to talk about his background and life growing up in California’s Central Valley and how different the area feels now compared to when he was younger. He talks about seeing the majority of the family-run farms being steadily replaced with large commercial operations and how that’s drastically impacted the workforce and economics of the region. He goes on to discuss issues of water protection and water quality in the Central Valley and how Bay Area elites prioritize their water quality over that of the rural farmers.

I worked construction in NY for years, worked in Trumps building rebuilding a floor. As we sat down to eat Trump and a bunch of suits walked in looking around talking about plans. He saw us eating and APOLOGIZED for disturbing out lunch. They all left. 5 minutes later he came back with a sandwich from the deli alone, and sat with us on an upside down bucket and shot the shit with us. Just regular talking like a normal guy. One worker asked why he didn't eat with the suits, he said although they all worked for him he didn't like them, he was just a regular guy. And he was. There is nothing pretentious about him. When he says her is better, it is because he is better. Does a olympic runner get called pretentious when he says he is faster than the rest? Not when it is the truth

When Trump says he is better, why then does he lie so much? When there is nothing pretentious about him, why does he lie about his achievements. He is a fraud. What makes you blind about the facts? Do you even know what facts mean? I don‘t need media comments to see that Trump contradicts his own words. I don‘t understand how you cannot see that. Must be a strange but unfortunately wide spread psychological condition.

As a 30's Black, Navy vet, kids, hip hop kinda guy.......I voted for Trump because everytime I heard the guy speak, as a man I can tell when a man is dis-ingenuous and Trump came off as *REAL* and off the cuff. He was truly the only candidate (including Obama) that I could relate too. He was arrogant, harsh, brash, but truthful. Qualities that many may not like but qualities of a true leader.

@yamabushi170
@yamabushi170 5 жыл бұрын
"I don't care" is pretty much the ultimate defense against the hysterical screeching pejoratives of the left. The moment you stop caring about their idiot insults they become meaningless. Conversely, the moment you try to 'defend' yourself and explain away whatever your supposed transgression is then you've bought into their narrative and you'll just be running to keep up with their madness.

I write this from China (where I've lived for eight (8) years): Victor Hanson is great for the intellectual soul of our democracy/republic. We've got no voting here in China. Trump represents the rebirth that comes from the right to vote. It sounds cliche, but the elites in America have striven over the last three years to deprive the "deplorables" of their right to vote.

See how the economy survives a trade war with China or the huge amounts of extra debt that will be amassed after a war with Iran. Economic policy takes years to take full effect. Look at the rising employment rates on a graph. Unemployment dropped from 10% to 5% under Obama after the GFC. His policies continue to take effect under Trump but Trump's isolationism will eventually wreck the economy.

It always helps to expose ourselves to different points of view. One issue of mass data collection and its predictive algorithms is that recommended videos or search results are affected by your history; This ends up curating content that meets the confirmation-bias of consumers and often hides alternative viewpoints. I go out of my way to find both sides and debate forums that foster civil discourse where the best arguments backed by the best credible data wins. I enjoy mass data, but wish I could shake up the algorithms to let it know I am not seeking confirmation-bias. I did find this content to be very well constructed with much merit. I wish more people were aware such content exists and were willing to expose themselves to material that does not [at face value] meet their confirmation-bias. United we stand, divided we fall.

I would like to have a copy of "The Case For Trump". I am Australian, so l would like to have Trump on our side, being a small population in a vast expanse of land. Also admire your patience, in interviews with Peter Robinson, as l notice he argues against anything "anti democrat". Not so good, for an interviewer, should be more open minded. I admire your knowledge, immensely !

Mere proclamations are not sufficient to make it so. Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and George Washington are most often listed as the three highest-rated presidents among historians. The remaining places within the Top 10 are often rounded out by Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson, Harry S Truman, Woodrow Wilson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Andrew Jackson, and John F. Kennedy. More recent presidents such as Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton are often rated among the greatest in public opinion polls, but do not always rank as highly among presidential scholars and historians. Oddly enough, Trump is never mentioned, nor is it likely that he ever will be.
