This is Hoover UK`s third series of TwinTub, produced in 1964 at the Hoover Washing Machine factory at Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales.
It washes 6lbs of clothes and spin dries the same. It uses a spinning pulsator in the side of the tub, which wizzes round at 545rpm, producing active currents of water which move the clothes quite fast around the tub. The maximum wash time is usually 4 mins. The spin dryer spins at 2,100rpm to spin all the water out of the clothes leaving items just damp for ironing.
The washtub is capable of being used as a boiler as it has a powerful 3kw heater, this is linked to a heater timer and you can set the temperature and the washing action starts when the correct temp is reached.
This machine has had a complete overhaul, new pump, belts and internal hoses, along with a visit to the "Spar of Neil" where it had the spin lid re-built due to eroding with the caustic soap powder residues and a cabinet re-spray. Thanks Neil, ready for another 60yrs of Hoover Active Water Action!!!

I remember as a young child, my mum having a similar machine. The sound of the washer and spinner would lull me to sleep, it was so comforting, and I can still memorise the smell of the washing powder as it's fragrance filled the air, fabulous memories! What a BEAUTIFUL Machine! My BIG irritation with today's Models (not that they can really be compared - but they are all they make now) is the lack of a built-in Heater... NOBODY but me ever seems to mention this... Thanks for the Vid. - great stuff!

Thanks, its was the first Hoovermatic with the new & latest top controls styling, I love the blue colorway and controls, the hose is quirky as well as all other models then went to a long hose out of the back. Yes todays plastic twintubs cannot have very hot water in them as they warp the plastic and leak, British twintubs mainly had heaters that could boil the water used for washing !!

@@WeHadOneOfThoseThanks for the info. - interesting. I had a BRAND NEW (one of the last ever made!) Hotpoint Supermatic Twin Tub De-Luxe that I purchased from them as recent as 1998! But I am HEART-BROKEN, as I left my Partner to deal with things when I gave up my home and moved in with him some years ago, and he left it in my last place... VERY painful to even think about even now... I SO looked after it (it was like brand new still) I ‘cherished’ it... Will they ever bring them back I wonder? I mean, there is obviously still a call for Twin Tubs - whatever we think of the modern ones - they’re everywhere! I just wonder at why no large Manufacturer has taken it up! And if they do bring them back; will they be mostly ‘metal’ built as the old ones? I doubt it... My Spinner dismounted once; when the man came out to it, he could not praise the old-type Twin Tubs enough! (he was about to retire) He said it was a pleasure to go out to tend to them; he said that the general ‘insides’ (including the heavy duty materials we don’t see today) had not been altered or amended since the 1960s - and that the modern Automatics were trash in comparison... He also said it was the ONLY Machine Hotpoint still actually Manufactured in Britain! (1998! - I was shocked we even made any....) Automatics ruin and eat your clothes...

These where so popular here, very fast in operation, cheap to use, easy to move around the kitchen and because house where small we didnt have an identified laundry area like you do, so washing was done regularly or when the sun was shining, the spinner was the biggest technological advantage as many fabrics could be ironed straight from the spinner and cottons dried much quicker than wringing etc.

When you think how easy it is now with modern automatics, you can really appreciate the work involved with a twintub - but your gran probably only had a washboiler previously, so this new time saving twinny must have been a godsend to her then!!

Precious memories! In Tanzania back in the late 80s, some expat missionaries from the US were leaving and my parents bought a pair of Hoovermatics (very similar to this one) at their garage sale. Those machines created quite the buzz among our family and friends because washing machines were not very common here. In fact, many people had never seen one in real life. Laundry day at the house was like a huge show at the theatre as neighbours came to watch my mother demonstrate the use of the machine. The sound of the spinner is what I remember the most. What a thrill! 👊😎

Lovely to see, great wash action and look at those short wash times and water temperatures. Interesting to see the names of the ICI manmade fibres all listed. Mum had a later version in the early 70's, which replaced an enormous Parnall tub machine where you had to put heated water into it and run the clothes through powered rubber rollers. It had an enormous GEC motor on the base which twisted a Bakelite agitator back and forth. To boil clothes (towels and nappies!) she had a Burco boiler quite large, which stood outside on wash day and took about 30 mins to bring the water up to boiling point. It had a metal body and cast legs all in a galvanised finish. She got an AEG stand alone spinner with drain spout which needed a bowl under it to catch the water. That started her love of AEG and she got one of their automatic washers, and all the other kit gradually went. Stayed with AEG until the 2000's then went Meile,

Hello Ken and a great story of family washday, those Parnall wringer washers where built like tanks, powerful wringers and a swing over the sink metal spout , many people teamed them up later with a separate spinner for quicker drying. Those Burco boilers where just about in every kitchen boiling the Terry nappies of the kids and always seen in many a cafe and tea room being used asa tea urn.

This one is my dream machine....just like the design, and its veery simple. The first model my granny had and it was in use until four years ago when the wash tub finally collapsed after nearly 50 yrs of use, but it was the best machine of all of 'em! Would love one of these! Nice vid!

Great Vid chestermike the idea is to not to put to much in the tub, and you got it right not to much and not too little. Action on the pulsator killed the lather for the second load if you used a not so decent quality powder, it meant having to put a bit extra in the tub. Great video and great washer for its time, the spin dry action got the cottons almost dry and ready for ironing or line hanging if the sun was out. They did not need to be out all day, maybe an hour or so in the sun.

As a 7 year old boy I remember going to the house next door and the couple there had this exact machine. It was then that my obsession with washing machines began - to say I was fascinated by the Hoovermatic would be an understatement. Best part was you could choose how hot or cold you washed at and saved on detergent and heating the water by reusing it and the clothes came out dryer and took no time to dry on the line. Must have been better for the environment and as this washer proves could be repaired. I just wish they were still made. 😕

Mother's might have been older than the one you mention because I clearly remember it had no safety mechanism on the spin dryer; just lower the spin mat (which was rigid plastic and hinged under the spinner lid so useless as a spin mat (I recall being called upon to rescue lost socks because I had the skinniest arms!!), and off you went)) Great machine though - Mum loved it and was gutted when it gave up

My Nan used to do all her washing in a Hoovermatic, from when I was born until the day she passed. I guess that's why Friday was wash day. She used to spend the entire morning washing and most of the afternoon watching soaps and ironing. Fond memories. I think my Mum had one too - I think she soon abandoned it for an automatic top loader. My Mum did and still does a lot of things the same way my Nan used to, but I can't blame her for giving up the twin tub. It's a lot of work for a working Mum.

They certainly did, fill it up with hot water from the back fire or boiler and then switch on the heater for a real rolling boil wash. These metal ones are dated but many still about working and you can now but the plastic twintubs but cant boil wash in them .

I remember Phillips twin tubs being on sale in shops like Rumbelows in 1974-5. I (could be completely wrong) think they were similar, or related to the Frigidaire Mastertwin that was about a few years earlier. They both had the same spin on/off switch, ie a chrome plated lever that crossed the spin drier lid to prevent it being opened. A bit like the one on the Servis 108. Loving your machine on show here Mike btw.

Hello Karen , yes indeed modern appliances are here to stay , but back then many where switching from wringer washers and wash boilers , the use of a fast spinner in our UK climate would have been a godsend to get clothes washed and dried.

I have just got a 3304 from Ebay. It was built in Meadowbank, Sydney. Needs some work to get it operational. Just ordered the new pump from a place in New South Wales. (Funny Australian Hoovermatics being made in New South Wales!). Only real concern is a corroding spin tub.

We had one of these here in the US, but as someone said, ours did not heat the water. I remember there being a rubber gasket thing that filled the top of the spinner compartment. It was like concentric circles spaced apart with ribs, so it was like a colander that you used to compress the clothes in the spinner down. We had to have one of these in the late 60s, early 70s because we did not have enough water pressure to make an automatic washer work. We had to wait forever for it to fill the spinner. Whoever was doing laundry sat with a book at hand to read while waiting.

Samsung and likely other Asian-based manufacturers still make versions of the classic twin tub washer but they seem to be only available for sale in Asia and the Middle East. There is an outfit in Britain that refurbishes old Hoover machines but they cost upwards of £500 and for that kind of cash you can get a really nice portable fully automatic washer.

My mum had a similar hoovermatic (series 2 ?). The corners were very rounded. The spinner lid was anodized blue, i think. There was a small wash board so you could scrub cuffs and collars. Weak point - water valve. Got replaced 1979 by T5024 - same weak point. Still have over all lid: used as a shelf. Washing with Twin Tubs very time consuming. I agree with other comments.

I have noticed before the earlier machines had much louder spin motors, which i've never understood as they all use the same unit. The change seemed to occur during the life of the 3314L, my mother had a 1971 example ( waiting for my revival) that was very noisy, but an aunt a later one that was far quieter. My T5090 is very quiet too. The only reason I can think is perhaps they changed the profile or hardness of the motor brushes slightly. Any ideas?

Hello Simon the first Hoovermatics used a very big induction motor for the wash and wash fixed almost rigid to the cabinet and did reverb quite a bit and hence the loud noise rumbling etc. the later machines had smaller motors and more plastic parts inside which helped tom dampen the noise, the Hoovermatic washdogs and later models also had the outer spin cans made of formed plastic which again dampened down muc of the noise. But alas it wouldnt be a Hoovermatic without some shake rattle & rolling water action !!

Just a question, i use the auto rinse on my machine, two rinses, then i turn the load "upside down" for another two. But sometimes the rinse isn't as good as a manual one, so, do the non deluxe machines have a more powerful motor? Cos if i tend to over fill my spinner above half way, it labours the motor, plus i have noticed on the first three models of machine (not sure about this one) the outer spin canister is cone shaped, ie giving quicker emptying. Or does mine need looking at?

Hello Tom, it would have been a great washer to have in the 60`s, the DeLuxe model for the time, actually this one has had a full re-spray, the washing powders of old where more caustic than todays and ate their way through the paint, saying that this model paint finish was much thinner than the two previous models, the spinner lid was actually corroded through with the harsh powder, friends painstakingly rebuilt the lid with metal and painted it also re-spraying the cabinet, it now has a good coat of car polish on it for protection !!

I had two of these in the seventies and eighties. Best washer and spin dryer I had. Got rid of them when I had a triple loader Milnor washer installed in my basement. this machine use to keep whites white and get stained clothes new again. I would buy one in a heartbeat if it was manufactured again. If made with metal parts like as of old, I would be willing to pay the price they ask knowing it will last. Too much plastic in society and appliances have become throw a ways after a couple years use. IT contributes to ruining our environment with appliances with plastic parts that break down in a year .

Why do some of these machines lose that wonderful jet engine sound in the spinner. I have collected quite a few of them and only one still makes that noise. Is there anything I can do to the spin motor or pump to get that sound back again?
@WeHadOneOfThose
@WeHadOneOfThose 4 жыл бұрын
The model above has a very unique jet sound as it has a different larger cast iron pulley , all to do with frame as well, also a new tighter belt and new carbons in the motor makes it get up to speed quicker giving that jet sound 👍

They probably don't make machines like this because they aren't "high efficiency". However, I can see how efficient these could be. You could do multiple loads using the same water. I would really like a machine like this one or newer and less loud lmao.
@WeHadOneOfThose
@WeHadOneOfThose 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Greego, yes very true, although its economic if you wash repeated loads a modern washing machine washing a full 9kg washload with main wash and 2 rinses will not even fill this washtub , todays machines are very economical in terms of wash water used, electricity consumed and the amount of powder required etc.

Fantasic machine, has it had an overhall or is it in its original state. I have recently aquired the latest model that Hoover made, the T5090 gray.
