I think you have to make two lists. "aspirational cars" and "cars that actually changed motoring". Because while everyone had posters of the Countach, the car from the 80s that really had the biggest influence on the car business and what we drive today is the Dodge Caravan.

I agree. Those three supercars don’t fit the list; IMHO it should have been the K-car or Caravan for the 80s, the Jeep Cherokee for the 90s (starting the SUV craze in earnest), and the VW TDI models for the 00s (making Diesels (briefly) cool for a few precious years before Dieselgate).

Love this walk thru the decades. I'd throw these in for consideration. 1970's - Honda Accord. This car would go on to sell millions and define a segment 1980's - Dodge Caravan. Started a whole new segment of family cars 1990's - Ford Explorer. Launched the SUV craze we still see today

Only people who get their history from Hollywood movies think there were more Beetles in the 60s, which just isn't true. And the F-150 EXPLODED in sales starting in 1998 and went absolutely ballistic in the 2000s. I stand behind this list.

The F150 was absolutely the car of the 2010s, it is essentially what forced Tesla to make a Cybertruck. 2010s was the beginning of the luxury truck as well.

I actually think the Chevy Impala is the car of the 60s - it was by far the most popular car sold (they sold over a million in 1965 alone). You're right about the Beetle - it was so dominant in Europe, but I think he's right that it wasn't until the late 60s that it took off in the US.

True and the aspirational car of the 80's was the Thomas Magnum PI car- Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole. I did a vacation in Hawaii in 1987 and the place was red with a huge number of these for rentals. Tom Selleck was the man of the 80's- Ferrari owes him huge for keeping them relevant.

I agree with most of these EXCEPT for the 90's and 00's. From what I remember from the 90's (I was a teenager) the Dodge Viper was the most talked about "aspirational" car. I don't remember even hearing bout the F1. For the 00's it has to be the Escalade. EVERYBODY wanted one and they were EVERYWHERE. Keep up the great content! I watch every day at lunch.

Most influential to me would be 40s Jeep, 50s 55-57 chevy, 60s probably the mustang but the 2nd gen charger brought lots of people into liking cars, 70s 77 Trans Am Smokey and the Bandit, 80s Fox mustangs, 90s....I don't know, maybe the supra or rx7, 00s Terminator Cobra, 10s....honestly there isn't much made after the 08 recession that I care much about. Going to argue against the Beetle, I think people got them because they had to, not because they wanted to. Look at the sales figures for Trans Ams the few years before Smokey and the Bandit, vs the few years after. They shot up because people wanted a Trans Am. 80s sure, I still have the Countach poster I bought as a kid, but the answer, if we are going by the 70s metric would be the K car. Still 5.0 mustang is THE answer. 90s. McLaren F1... No arguments there except that none of my friends knew about them until the 00s. I was the only one I knew, before the internet, who knew what an F1 was. Their values in the 90s reflected this as well. It was the most influential 90s car, 15 years later..... 00s Veyron, yuck. Everyone went gaga over that car but I never liked it. Still the 03/04 Cobra for me because it was the first attainable car with near 400hp since the late 60s. 10s and on, again I really don't care. There are some vettes I like and aluminum 5.0 standard cab F150s are cool. Everything is overly tech laden. I just want good fuel injection and a back up camera. Don't care about ABS, traction control, most of the crash safety stuff etc.

The story really starts in 1905, when self-made engineer Herbert Austin left his job as manager of Wolseley Tool and Motor to found the Austin Motor Company. The Austin Motor Company, a British car maker, was the first to submit a working prototype for the Bantam Reconnaissance Car, which later became the iconic Willys MB "Jeep" of World War II. The American Austin Car Company, a subsidiary of the British Austin Motor Company, struggled to sell small Austin cars in the US market. In 1940, when the US government began a bidding process for a small, four-wheel drive military vehicle, American Bantam used Austin parts to create a prototype that exceeded the Army's design parameters. My favorite car of all time is my husband’s 1958 Plymouth, my favorite car I’ve ever owned is my 1963.5 Ford Galaxie 500xl fastback 427cid that my hubs built me! It was a rusty turd so hubs built me a twin turbo, big tire promod drag car. “I wanted to try and get on the street outlaws show but we wouldn’t pay them to be on the show, but next year we’re going to race in some NPK events!” Thank you hubby! You have made my dream come true! Long story short the 1957 Chevrolet is a good choice Tyler! But I want a 1956 post car, the lowest spec I could find to turn into a daily driver with 2000HP on a 29.5 tire, drag wing and wheelie bars! Keep it street!

You make a very compelling list of cars, at least on the aspirational side. There are some attainable cars that deserve some honorable mentions later in the 20th century. 1980s - AMC Eagle/Jeep Cherokee (both started the crossover S.U.V. segment) Ford Taurus (revolutionized the design of sedans for decades to come) Dodge Caravan/Plymouth Voyager (started the minivan segment that exploded for the rest of the decade, into the 90s and 2000s) 1990s - Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee (both kick-started the S.UV. craze that continues to this day) Even though it's early to tell for the 2020s, the one I can mention so far is the Ford Maverick. I have some bias since I own one myself but it's a vehicle that's been begged for many years, the affordable compact truck. It delivers fantastic fuel economy numbers out of the hybrid while fairly decent out of the Ecoboost. Ford can't make enough of them to meet demand which shows how aspirational it is for the decade so far.

The eighties, as much as I hate to admit it has two major cars over that Lambo. First up, I love the Countach and would own one in a heart beat. It is miles better than these two cars I'm about to mention, even with it's quirks. First would be the Chrysler K car. The K car is what saved Chrysler in the eighties and put Lee Iococca on everyone's minds. It MADE Chrysler a dominant force in the 90s. And did it by being cheap. Reliable. And easy to repair. The second is the Ford Taurus. The Taurus single handedly ushered in a new design language with its introduction in the late 80s. Still, that Countach is legendary today, and those two are not. But they did literally define a decade.

I got my driver's license in 1976, and my Dad owned a 66 Mustang V8 manual. Loved that car. In 1978 I got my first car. A 66 Beatle that was gutless but fun to drive.

I agree entirely up to the 1970s; I can see the Beetle, but I would have said the Porsche 911 as that was the decade it really came of age ("Thank god there's no 48-hour race anywhere in the world, because chances are nobody could beat Porsche in a 48 hour race. They're probably the only cars in the world that would stand up for something like that." - Carroll Shelby, 1974 ). For the 80ies, I think the Robocop Taurus was the turning point; sure everyone had a Countach poster, but aside from a few Fiero body kits, how much influence did it really have, how many people actually got to drive one? For the 90ies, I would put the Carrera GT before the McLaren, but then I've never found the F1 attractive. That being said, I think the car of the 90ies was the Dodge Viper, because it brought back the "car that's trying to kill you" muscle car craze. For the 2000s, while my gut says the Subaru WRX (STi!) or even the Audi A4, I would have to agree with the Prius as much as I detest the darn things. If not the Prius, then the CRV or the RAV4. 2010s, I have to agree with the Tesla Model S, but I'm not ready to declare the CyberTruck the winner for the 2020s, particularly since I live in a place where we typically have snow on the ground six months out of the year and they're not really suited for Canada, eh? Also, honorable mention to the Volvo 740 Turbo Wagon, if only for those awesome adds in the 80ies.

Honorable mention In the 80's also the Ferrari 308GTB that Magnum PI drove was a well wanted car but still unattainable at the time but I see Countach was hanging on every ones wall next to Farrah Fawcett. We had a 66 VW bug 1300cc and mine was awesome for I had a crank out sunroof. Took my drivers test in that car and passed. Dad said I am proud of you and said have fun with friends so off I went. Well I had a red traffic light on a hill and the person was on my bumper and I had to feather that clutch not to roll into the car. Wouldn't of been cool if I had to call Dad saying I already have a accident a hour after passing my test. Tyler you need to teach April how to feather that clutch stopped on a hill. Love the videos.

They didn't make the Model T in just black. They had colors but black paint dried faster and because they were cranking them out so fast they eventually just used black until the colored paints could be perfected. The '32 Ford started out with a four-cylinder engine but, within that year, the flathead V-8 came about. This is what made it a favorite of those who wanted to drive fast. In 1957 the Ford Fairlane 500 outsold the Chevrolet Bel Air but the Chevy is generally used as the icon for that year. In later years, Ford made the car they named the Ford 500 to honor that 1957 model.

1900-1970 I agree completely, but for 1980s I agree with the comments. Creating an entirely new segment with the minivan it has to be Dodge Caravan. The 1990s can be any number of SUV from Explorer and Cherokee to the CRV and RAV4 that still sell in droves today. 2000 its any SUV and Pickup. Every manufacturer had to have a large range of both to be competitive.

I understand why you picked the Countach for the eighties but I have to disagree. The car of the eighties was the Ford Taurus. I wasn't a big fan of the standard car but I did like the SHO. The Taurus totally changed how sedans were styled and gave folks a totally different perspective about American cars. The Taurus was also available to us Mere Mortals. It also single handily saved the Ford Motor Company from almost certain Bankruptcy. The Taurus was everywhere. Cheers!!!

As someone who doesnt live in the US, i find it funny that many of the cars on this list werent even sold outside of the US. How can they be considered the most influential of their decade? Toyota have been leading the industry worldwide for a while but not a single japanese car was mentioned. Also, pretty much every car guy i know would say the F40 has been more influential than the Countach (which is actually a 70s car, not 80s).

The Citroën Traction Avant was the first massively-produced front-wheel drive car, with over 700k units made. The Cittoén 2CV had the best susoendion system ever. Over 3 million units were built. The Fiat Nuova 500 was a masterpiece in packaging. Over 3 million units were built.

I got the Mustang, Prius and Tesla S right. My other late choices would have been the '76 Eldorado convertible and BMW 850CSi for the 80s. Cyber truck yes.

I don't know about Hoovie, but I had a GNX on my wall. I had a chance to buy a typhoon and my response was, unless it's a GNX, no thank you. 70s would be the Porsche 930 or Countach 60s, I would say Camaro Z28 50s I would say Cadillac El Dorado

I can’t believe I’m going to say this. However for the 80’s I think the transformational vehicle for the decade sadly was the Chrysler mini van. I will now turn over my man card.

The mini van - and, sadly - the terrible Chrysler K-cars. So many of them and boy, they were absolute garbage. I will say that vans were cool in the 70s (especially when they were converted inside and had those amazing paint jobs on the outside.

I might suggest adding the 1950 ford because of its design (integrated fenders and hoods into the three box design used for decades by most automakers).

My 70's is the Ford/Mercury Capri because I drove a 72 in 78 when the army sent me to Germany.

😅In the 90’s it was the Ford Explorer which started the SUV craze that we still have today. I barely heard of a McLaren back then. For the 80’s the Countach was a poster car but you would rarely see one if you didn’t live in CA. For the 80’s it was probably the Toyota Camry. I do agree with the Tesla Model S as I have a Model 3 myself.

The 80’s most iconic vehicle was the stretched limo. Yes! I agree with the Lamborghini as mega exotic and the poster on the walls, but the stretched limo embodied the excess, magnificence of the 80’s. A true definition or wealth, luxury, power, influence and also so mysterious. Who was in it? How much do they make? How many seats does it have? The Lambo is definitely a top contender, but I’ll argue to the grave that a boomerang antenna was more iconic than lambo doors. Now, I’d rather have a lambo, but the statement of a decade is embodied in the stretched limo.

My family had a Beetle in the mid-60's. By the oil embargo in the 70's we had a Toyota Corolla then a Datsun. Both the Beetle and the Japanese cars were second cars, we always had a full size freeway friendly beast for long family trips.

Tesla is the best car company ever! No gas stations, No oil changes, No smog check, No corrupt dealership, No catalytic converter and as fast as a $650,000 Lamborghini !

I think the most difficult decade is the 90s. As an enthusiast it's hard to argue the F1, but most people don't even know what that is. It's also hard to ignore the surge of the SUV. But, the 90s were the golden age for Japanese cars. Lexus built million mile cars, and Toyota the 2jz Supra. Honda gave us N/A 100+HP per liter engines with unbelievable durability. and double wishbone suspension all around. Mazda gave us the Miata, and the FD. Although we didn't see them here, the WRX and EVO, were born. It's hard to pick a single car, but if I had to it would be the NSX, because it exemplifies all those traits in a single model. But, IMO, it has to be something Japanese, because they changed the automotive world in the 90s.

My wife owns a pt cruiser, I own a pontiac fiero gt and a lexus ls400. 80, 90, and 2000 car's of the years in my eyes. As long as they are running. Nice video.

As a young person, my equivalent poster car was in the 2010s and I think the countach equivalent because of its insane styling and how cool it was and the fact that I’d set it as the background on any electronic I ever owned, I’d pick the 2011 Lamborghini Aventador

I agree with Tyler on first 6 decades. The 70’s barely saw the Beetle make it through (‘79 was the last year) and Japan was eating it’s lunch by the end (not to mention the Rabbit). Agree with the Countach for the 80’s. In the early 90’s the Miata was the “It” car and the same could nearly be said about the Boxster in the late 90’s. Those were what people were talking about-not the F1. In fact, an argument could be made for the Lexus RX300. It was pretty much the first crossover that redefined the segment and became the benchmark for the time. 2000’s? Eh, I suppose the Escalade. Rappers were not cool until they had one. 2010’s? Maybe the Model S but by that time Pickups and Crossovers were really taking off but none really stood out. 2020’s are still young but what’s generated a lot of chatter has been the C8. The new design has been polarizing and has been about the most interesting car subject to date. My two cents. Cheers!

The Toyota RAV4 should be on the list in the 90s because it was the first car-based SUV, not a truck-based SUV like most others. It created the "crossover" segment which is pretty much the only thing anyone sells anymore except for pickups.
