My dad was a used car dealer from the 80’s through the early 2000’s. One of the coolest things was he didn’t own his own car. He normally took one of his more high dollar vehicles off the lot and drove new cars home everyday. He brought this exact truck home one night and it was the coolest thing. It had nitrous and everything. Needless to say we well he got a speeding ticket that night when I told him I wanted to see how fast it was. 😂

When I was 16 my parents offered to buy me a vehicle and asked me what I wanted. I requested an F150 Lightning and my parents knew what an F150 was and went shopping for a vehicle for a teen (me). When the dealership informed them it had a supercharged V8 with a bit too much power, I got a bit of a talkin' to when they were informed what this truck was. Seeing the kid jump into Hoovies car at the end reminded me of one time at a car dealership I used to work at. I was what they called a Service Porter up on the Service Drive. I was told to jump start a customers Cadillac sedan that had been brought in and was getting ready to remove the cover to the trunk release (electric but had a outside covered key) and discovered the back doors were unlocked, the front were electric. I could just get in the back seat and reach over to pop the drivers door. The ground was wet and I didn't want to have to clean my wet shoe prints off the rear seats so I took off my shoes to avoid making a mess.

When this truck launched, it was an awesome time to be a Ford dealer. We had Lightning, we had Cobra and we even had the little SVT Focus. People would grab this truck and slap underdrive pulleys on them, add a Johnny Lightning intake, maybe do a tune and a few weeks later they'd have a hole in the bottom of the block. As time went on, it was harder than hell to find one that hadn't been flogged to death. This example is a damned time machine and I'm jealous that you bought it. What a fun truck to have!

If you are comfortable at all with soldering, you can fix the odometer very easily by resoldering one or two points on the circuit board. Plenty of KZbin videos available on fixing that. My neighbour had a black one for many years. When working in the front yard, I always knew when Jim was coming home because you could hear the supercharger whine (I would then go and help him make the difficult turn, backing his fishing rig into a narrow driveway off a super busy street. He finally sold it (the rwd was not too useful on greasy boat ramps and he did a lot of fishing). The one rusty place I found was the rad support, which I noticed was very bad when I was underneath trying to fix one of the lower fog lights. It was a cool truck and always sat so right.

I bought one of these new in Miami in 2004. It was black and extremely inconvenient. Two small bucket seats with no extra room. Couldn't even get comfortable with my girlfriend because of the center console. The engine was solid, but the front end started to give up after two years. Needed tie rods and such... I got the Borla exhaust, timing chip, and blower pulley to make over 400 HP and since I lived in Key West and fished for a living, it was the fastest fish truck on the island. ... And I never had a Miata pull away from me! 😂

I worked at a ford dealer in San Diego and got to drive a manual version of one of these. I guess it was made specifically for some rich footballer that played for San Diego. Beast of a car but you could tell the transmission definitely came out of a commercial truck, quite crude and notchy.

The vacuum display problem is common with age. Two things to check. If you start the car and there is no display - spin your dash brightness knob and see if it comes right up. That could be an easy fix. The second is they run on a higher voltage generated on the module and a lot of the time a simple cheap 10 cent capacitor dries out and doesn't provide the bumped up voltage. This can be temperature sensitive while its decaying. Electronic Techs have a process for this. You buy a can of "cold spray" and a variable heat gun. You identify the failure mode and apply whichever is appropriate. In this case it fails when cold. So you let it warm up and work then spray a little bit of chill in sections across the board until it fails. This is how you isolate an intermittent. Then you find a replacement part and replace it. Simple. And note leaving anything variable in one setting indefinitely is a mistake. You should periodically "exercise" every knob in your car to keep things working. This means all heater/AC settings, brightness adjustments, light switches, entertainment buttons/knobs etc.

There's a guy about 10 miles from me that uses a red one as his personal and landscaping vehicle. It's been thoroughly weathered but, he throws lawn mowers and rusty lawn implements in the bare painted bed like any other truck. And it still sounds plenty healthy!

I have a 2000 Ford Lightning that I bought off my neighbor 6 years ago with 49000 miles (now with 51000mile). He sold it to me for a great price. Was and always has been my dream truck. He's always asking if l will sell it back to him. My 11-year-old son has laid claim to it so I believe it will stay in the family for as long as I'm living. The only other vehicle I'd love to own is an 03-04 terminator cobra.

The horse power bump actually came in 2001,it also added 3:73 gears, bilstein shocks, larger throttle body. I test drove a 2000 before buying my 2001,it was a noticeable difference in acceleration, ride, handling. I still have that 01 with 10k miles on it,never driven in rain and always stored indoors. It still looks new,and even retained the new car smell. I ordered an extra set of floor mats and 4 wheels when I bought it,those are still in my garage attic along with about every piece of literature available back then.

Once they're modified they're all basically the same. Kind of like the 07-12 gt500 the 07-09 makes same power as 10-12 once they're modified the same even though the later cars came with more power and better gearing factory.
