That rubberized undercoating is death for cars. It traps moisture underneath and corrodes from the inside and you have no idea until it starts falling apart. South Main Auto did a video on this. The only kind of rustproofing you should ever use is the oil based kind. Avoid anything with the rubberized undercoating like the plague.

So true. When Ziebart started, back in the 60s, their product formed a rubber-like skin. Over time, it developed micro-fissures which allowed water in, but did not allow it to escape again. The water remained trapped against the metal, and actually accelerated the rusting process. To be fair, Ziebart has improved massively since then, but I typically choose a liquid spray treatment, such as Krown. I live in the Canadian rust belt, so I do have real world experience, sigh.... 😔
@quentinc1275

@@bobmcl2406 I personally use cosmoline but krown and fluid film are both great as well. I know someone with an 08 silverado with 150k miles which has frame rot in multiple places and a ton of rust on everything underneath which all can be traced back to it being ziebarted around the time it was 5 years old. Hoovie - you have a great 928 but just be aware there's a risk of frying the LH ECU (fuel injection control unit) when jumping off a donor car. It can be done but the later LH computers (+87 onwards) are particularly sensitive to voltage spikes. Preferred method is to disconnect and put some charge in the battery first, but if stranded do what you gotta do.
@bushwood
@bushwood 2 жыл бұрын
Very true statement. I always panicked when my 89 needed a boost. When you have to, make sure the rescue car is turned off. I never fried mine, but did have the ECU rebuilt. Maybe I only toasted it. There is a temperature sensor on top of the engine that caused a power drain issue for me. Made the cooling fans run constantly. Cheap fix.
@TheTardis157
@TheTardis157 2 жыл бұрын
Any original LH2.3 that hasn't been rebuilt is on borrowed time. The factory hybrid tile circuit it has loves to dry out and fail. Multiple people have a workaround for it. But at $600 it isn't cheap. The rest of the computer is fine and doesn't care about voltage spikes, just that one stupid circuit (speaking from experience).

Missing the front belly pan on the 928. Timing belt is more than 2-3 hours. More like 5 -10 depending on how far you go. Rebuilding the tensioner is an interesting part of the job. Don't lose the spacer (washer) under the tip of the belt tensioner. They tend to fall off when removing the tensioner and go unnoticed on the shop floor. But the belt was done last year. A tension check and adjustment each year would be a good idea. That's relatively easy to do in an hour or so.

hello about the silverado ss, i live in canada where a tacoma frame snaps in half in 10 years, your truck is not that bad, its just weird that the rust hit only a those spots, generally its surface rust all the way, the money you put on is not wasted, the truck is not too much far gone

This is a classic reason I will not even consider purchasing a used Northern car, or truck, the salt on the winter roads turns them into rust buckets. Ohhhh no issues with the 928, ouch bet you bit your tung on that one.

I was late to this channel. Didn't start watching until the first month of shut down. So I'm sure for people who have been here from the beginning it's even more impressive to see what Hoovie has been able to do with this channel and cartrek and the auction stuff. He's one of the big guys now I guess but it's so nice to see content creators like this succeed.

Truthfully, Hoovie deserves what he has. Many don't but god damn it, he is worthy. There is no other sound on the planet as good as that Ferrari driving home at full song. PS. Did anybody else watching this think about one of those portable battery jump starters many use when their battery tends to run down? Seems like this would be a must have item for a guy like Hoovie. No jab, just stating fact. Many high end cars that aren't drive much tend to have their batteries run down. Surprising he doesn't have a portable battery jump starter he just throws in the trunk when transporting one of this cars that don't fire right up.

I used to work for a man who’s family member worked at Hollywood Sports Cars (no longer there) and we would have the pleasure of occasionally taking a Ferrari for the weekend. Those cars were such pleasures. My uncle had two Maseratis and that sedan they made was a monster good time to be in it. I miss those days…such fun!

I enjoy the parts of your video when you and the Car Wizard walk under the cars and look them over ( a view you don't often see on some of these older cars). I also find it interesting how the Car Wizard has formed his opinions on particular car brands by the type of people who own them. Interesting bit of psychology there.

I have a good used black front bumper, a set of used fog lights, and a full set of factory service manuals for the 928. Let me know if you're interested! Make sure you put a jump post terminal cover on it! Those always go missing. You essentially have an exposed live 12V terminal without that cover installed.

I'm a truck driver and yes 4 to 5 dollars a mile is becoming average because of skyrocketing fuel prices. Since November my fuel bill has nearly tripled taking 1500 dollars a week out of my pocket or 6k dollars a month in pay cut so fuel surcharge either goes up to cover fuel or shipping prices go up.

The crossmembers love to rot out on these half ton GMT800s. I bought one when I was 17 hyped to get my first truck just to get it inspected and find out the crossmember was gone, drove perfect otherwise. These trucks are so great shame they rust so easily.

Beautiful 928! I have an 05 Silverado. Evidently, the original coating on these frames was a wax based material that is supposed to be reapplied whenever it is necessary (according to the dealer). I scraped off the wax and applied black Cosmoline wherever I could, including inside the tubular cross members. I would suggest someone inspect the rear-most cross member for corrosion where the spare tire bracket is attached. Mine failed (it corroded on the top where I couldn't get to it). When it does, the spare will drop out of the truck and drag on the road. The spare is held up with a hoist. The hoist has a "feature" that prevents it from dropping, unless there is a lock that is released on the hoist. This is lots of fun when it happens to you in a rain/snow storm, at night, laying in the mud on the side of the road I had to get mine towed because I didn't know about the lock. There are videos on YT about the hoist and how to modify it to "fix" the lock. Check yours out if you have one...

Ah, memories... I was driving a borrowed VW 1303S Beetle (with an engine that had started life as a 1500, btw), and stopped for petrol. Filled up, good to go...only I wasn't. Turned the key, no reaction. Thankfully, the ground was ever so slightly sloped from the petrol pump and out onto the road. So I was able to get into the car, keep the door open and give a good shove with my foot on the ground, and the car started rolling. I had the engine going before exiting the station.

Check the tension on the rear clamp for where the torque tube connects into the transaxle. The bolt stretches and loses tension, which results in damage to the actual driveshaft and the input shaft on the gearbox. It’s an easy, 2 minute job to check and a cheap bolt to replace fairly regularly as a preventative maintenance item. I drove my 928GT for 16 years and sold it with 424k km on it. Absolutely fantastic car if you keep on top of it.

Out of all people, you should carry one of those company battery jump starters that also work as a cell phone charger. Fit in the glove box. Also, I would just assume you installed 16 truckle charge leads in your garage, and put quick connect plugs on each battery so when you park it, the battery stays charged. Heck, since the pandemic started, I’ve installed 3 myself!

Chevy Rustarado: That rust is standard in Chevy Silverados in the mid-Atlantic and Northern states where road salt is used. Even with regular washes my and my neighbor’s Silverado’s both turned into rust buckets after a few years. Ironically, the rust appeared just after the factory rust-through warranty expired, so GM did their research and timed that well. I remember Chevy commercials bragging about the benefits of their new “hydro-formed” frames on these trucks. They picked the correct word “hydro”, if it means “dissolves in water”. As with Hoovie’s cross-members, both our cross-members rusted to pieces, and since the shock absorbers mount to those cross-members, they fell off as the mounts dissolved. I wonder how many rusty Silverados are currently on the road with no rear shocks because of the cheap metal GM used? This truck had many other quality control faults, and ended my desire to ever again purchase a GM product. My Cadillac Seville STS also helped in that decision, as a few years earlier, its Northstar engine’s head-bolts failed and left me stranded. GM actually had a commercial related to that engine as well, wherein they bragged about the Northstar’s reliability, even when run in the desert heat with low coolant. Not true, as when the head-bolts fail, these trouble-prone engines quickly overheat.
