When I was about 10 years old in 1995 my friend's dad was driving us to baseball tryouts in his early 90's dodge caravan when he went over a small bridge and unexpectedly caught some air. My friend and I shot up, almost completely out of our seats. We had a good laugh and then my buddy's dad turned around and hit the bridge a little faster. This time we came up off the seat completely like we were cresting an incline on a roller coaster. We were having so much friggin fun. My buds dad would increase speed each approach sending us higher and higher off our seats. My friends dad hit the ramp sending us out of our seats probably 3-4 more times. On the last launch, he hit the ramp with so much speed my buddy banged his head on the ceiling of the van. We finally head to tryouts and afterwards we get in the van to leave it wouldn't start. We all had to get a ride home from another parent. As were leaving we realized why the van wouldn't start...on the last approach the van crashed down so hard it cracked the oil pan and leaked oil all the way from the ramp bridge to the sports complex. RIP MR. Milliken's caravan.

Jason Garnett Yeah, I can't believe he didn't go in-depth to what this 1991 Dodge Minivan can do. It's hardly 25 years old, how are we supposed to know what this van can do if he won't give us a thorough review? Can it hold 3 weeks worth of groceries? How many kids can it take to band practice? With instruments? What if I have a job delivering newspapers - how many can it hold? Twist: I also have a job delivering phone books - how many can it hold? What if I have a job delivering aol.com introductory CDs? These are the things an owner of a 1991 minivan might want to know and Hoovie failed us. Mr. Garnett is right - why all this goofing off when you could be reading the spec sheets verbatim so I can know the important stuff, like dry gross weight. But, Jason Garnett, I have to say that you were completely wrong about DeMuro's LamboSUV review. If you are right about the italian army having a purpose for everything, then how do you explain the 2 ashtrays and massive rear speaker? Alright, the ashtrays make sense for the italian army, but tell me why they wanted subwoofers if you know everything

I have my late father's 1993 Dodge Caravan ES (short wheelbase) with the Chrysler 3.3 V6. Still runs great at 500,000. Only a bit of surface rust on the top of the roof where the original 24 year old paint has worn out; this was never parked in a garage. And the headliner is still perfect without becoming unglued! This was one of his favorite cars to drive of all he owned, and I can understand why. Comfortable seating, good visibility and nice to drive. Everything is sort of middle of the road - acceleration, handling, ride quality, braking. Nothing outstanding, nothing terrible. Just a good, consistent compromise overall. Simple, durable car that is easy and cheap to maintain.

@@dungdippedindian3933 that's a lie. My 92 dynasty with the 3.3 has 250k miles and still going strong with basic transmission upkeep. And my 97 3.5 is going on 200k with a strong healthy transmission. It doesn't take a genius to keep these vehicles going. Hell these transmissions can out last the gaskets on gm products. Honestly Chrysler is the first company I've gone through where the transmission has outlasted the engine.
@TheRealBmanswan5 жыл бұрын
@Marcus Möller a lot of evidence when reading about the history says otherwise. When they're taken care of properly they last for a lifetime. Most transmission failures for the 3.5 and 3.3 were due to lack of servicing or mechanic shops putting the wrong fluid into them. The 3.5 is known for oil sludge but if you change the oil every 2,000-3,000 miles you prevent sludge. The pcv was known to get clogged and stop the engine from operating as well which just required regular cleaning (usually done every oil change to benefit the engine) add to it the 3.5 was known for getting hot fast, cold air intake systems, oil cooling systems, and proper ventilation ( obviously didn't come stock) are a few mods that not only increase horsepower but benefit the engine. Though it couldn't be boosted or supercharged both engines provided decent amounts of power. I get about 240 to 250 horsepower with my 97 3.5. But I've also put in additional performance parts as well as swapped out air restrictions in the intake system and added a performance exhaust and catback system. My 3.3 does just fine stock, only difference it has from factory is custom catback exhaust system and it runs iridium spark plugs. Then again I use my 3.5 more than my 3.3 if I want to have fun, definitely sounds like a v6 mustang or Dodge Challenger.

my mom had the longer, non-AWD cousin of this van from 1991 when I was in high school. When we were shopping for it (used of course), they all had wood panel it seemed - IF it was the extended version. If it was the shorty, it seemed that very few had the wood grain. We wanted the extended edition. Ours was a blue-and-wood-grain pile of crap. The paint peeled off in sheets. The transmission was rebuilt under warranty before 70k miles, and then THREE MORE TIMES before 120k when the engine finally blew up. The hood latch broke - presumably because it broke so much that it was constantly opened. The Infinity cassette deck (which did sound great when it worked, and the joystick fader adjustment was particularly sweet) broke because the amplifier continually blew fuses. It took the rear wiper with it. The power windows broke. The heat rarely worked because the thermostat was permanently opened - the one that came with the van, and three more after that. I hope yours treats you better! :)

I owned a 1991 Dodge Caravan and it was absolutely the worst vehicle I ever owned. Transmission went bad after 72,000 which put it just past the 7 year, 70,000 mile warranty period. Dodge knew they had issues at that time with faulty transmissions and so I took them to small claims court with a stack of evidence backing my claim. Needless to say I won they lost and I got my transmission replaced. Shortly after that I started having issues with the engine so I got rid of it and got a 2002 Camry that lasted me for nearly 300,000 and 15 years and was still running like a Swiss watch when I finally traded it.

Fun fact: it ran the cassette at a slightly higher speed than normal cassette players, so typical prerecorded tapes sounded slightly too fast/higher pitched, and tapes recorded in it sounded slightly too slow/lower pitched if played in anything other than a Talkboy. I have no idea why they did this.

Cash for clunkers took most of em off the road. However some dude in my area still rolls around in a '93 Town and Country AWD every winter. Probably one of the most unique winter beaters I've ever seen.

Right from the get go was wondering if it had transmission issues even with only 49k miles on it. Wan't disappointed.

surprisingly in 1991 there were a lot of vehicles with wood grain such as the GM Station Wagons, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and Chrysler Minivans

Growing up my family had the Dodge version of this van in the year 1989. It gave up the ghost finely in 2003 or so.

I still prefer the 85-97 Ford Aerostar vans. My Dad owned a 1990 model he bought used in late summer of 1993 was a previous leased vehicle, was a base model XL short wheelbase 2wd in a cream color with brown interior! Had absolutely no power options and the AC never hardly worked right but back then to finally have your own seats was a luxury especially previously coming from a crammed 86 Chevy Celebrity lol

looks like my first one (a million years ago) but mine was only fwd. It was easier to transport my mom to chemo, and had told her to get one years before since she like garage sales, but she still drove the big buick wagon, years of her youth. Loved the van until the first snow storm (18"). wound up in a wendys wrong side facing, slid across a 4 lane main road, with my sister, fwd, no, would take my old 78 nova over that! It was the only car I ever owned that NEVER got stuck

We use to have the awd model back when I was a kid, the transmission went on it a couple times and after it broke a third time my step dad gave up fixing it.

All of the 91s with the 4spd automatic had tranny replacements.....over and over again. My neighbors bought one new in 91 at my reccomendation They replaced the tranny 3 times before 100k. But they have owned a new one every 4 yrs since. Just picked up their new Pacifica. Great vans overall

It was Chrysler's first Electronically Controlled 4 speed transmission. While it did improve fuel economy, it was horribly unreliable. I had a 1992 Chrysler Dynasty and the transmission went out at 92000km's. Just annoying because the 3.3 engine it was mated to was incredibly reliable. They used that engine from 1990 until 2010

My childhood sat in these stupid vans. I remember camping in a 91 when the reverse took a shit. My dad and my 35 lbs 6 year old frame pushed it around in neutral while dad yelled at mom for not steering it in the right direction while Simon & Garfunkel greatest hits played from the tape deck.
