Hope Head Doctor Into Steerer Tube Extender

A couple of months ago, I made a video about an adapter to extend the steerer tube by 50mm (2").
Steerer Tube Too Short? • Steerer Tube Too Short?
However, it’s missing the functionality of a headset cap (top cap) for adjusting the preload on the headset bearings, what it exactly means is that you could have back and forth play if the headset is loose, or your handlebar would not turn freely if it’s too tight, so tightening your headset bearings to the correct amount of preload is very important.
In this video, I’ll show you how I made the adapter clamped to steerer tube and then put in the Hope Head Doctor (adjustable star fangled nut) to the adapter.
You need 2 things:
1x M8 bolt, 4" x 1.125"
1x M10 flange nut
Put in the M10 flange nut into the adapter, nut facing downward, it should stuck in bottleneck. Use the short M8 bolt and screw it to the wedge, now put the adapter into the steerer tube and tighten the bolt. Make sure it is tight and solid before going to the next step.
Now you only have to put in the star fangled nut. I used Hope Head Doctor for a superior top cap and star nut system. (Easier to remove)
If you are having a hard time fitting in, insert a bolt and hammer it down.
And finally, put back everything and install the headset cap.
Remember to put in the correct amount of preload on the headset bearings, then tighten the stem bolts at the end.
Like I mentioned before, if the headset is too loose, you could have back and forth play, and if it’s too tight, your handlebar would not turn freely, so make sure you put in the right amount of preload on the headset bearings.

@DanyoSports

Thanks, the extender is safe as long as it is clamped to the steerer tube, riders rode these on their MTB in the 90’s, they are as strong as the threadless stems in the old days.

Don't wish to ever remove extender? Ok! Scuff thinner end of extender, WELL. Butter with JB•Weld. Use hex-head long 8mm bolt (grade 8 or 10), with Loctite. Allow at least 24 hours to set before installing star-nut and mounting your forks. Extender is not going to loosen or slip.

Very nice tutorial, I have now extended my fork in exactly the same way. Above the stem with the Head Doctor everything is correct and it holds without problems. Below the stem, however, the adapter in the steerer tube seems to shift because the headset loosens after every ride. Has anyone had the same problem and was able to fix it? best regards

Quill stems will often move slightly inside the steerer even when the wedge/cone is tight, it's a basic fault in their design that the top of the quill is a sliding fit and more often loose than tight, especially if the quill is painted. You could try using something like Loctite 603 to eliminate this movement (you'll have to remove all the paint to make the Loctite cure properly, or you could maybe just use ordinary CA "superglue" on the painted surface). There may also be movement between the extended steerer and the top bearing conical washer, so glue that on too once it's adjusted. This is a useful hack but it's probably not going to be as rigid/reliable as a single piece of metal of the correct size. You pays your money ...

This seems like a great idea but the Hope Head Doctor would not fit inside the quill riser I purchased. Up to that point, it was going great. I tried everything nearly ruining my fork. What is the precise brand of quill stem that will work for the Head Doctor? Thanks.
@DanyoSports
@DanyoSports 4 жыл бұрын
Try to remove the O-ring (black rubber band) from the Hope Head Doctor, you’ll see the gap of the expander, cut out and expand the gap a little more, it should shrink the expander a little bit so you could then slide it into your quill riser a little more easier.

@@DanyoSports I am now zero for 2 on finding a quill extender that will fit the Hope Head Doctor. Just ordered the Zoom Q-2 22.2 from Jensen and it has VERY thick walls so it was worse than the last one. Not even close to fitting in. Is there a specific quill extender brand that we know will work? Would really like to try this, but not sure what to look for. Thanks.
@DanyoSports
@DanyoSports 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that, I understand how frustrated it is to have 2 extenders not fitting the Hope Head Doctor. I suggest you to install a regular star nut, that way you don’t have to buy a third one, it’s more flexible and it would fit into your extender. If not, grind the inside wall of the extender, make it more room to fit the Hope Head Doctor. The brand name of my extender is Upanbike and you can get it from Amazon.

There are many options, if you couldn't find the M8 bolt, use a 1/4" x 4" screw/bolt, insert it into the flange nut and wedge then screw a nut at the end to tighten it down.
