Brilliant. Some of us familiar with East Asia in general and China in particular and have seen how things happen have been pretty sure India is nowhere near to their efficiency or infrastructure. True, some investments have been shifting out of China for the past several years due to rapidly rising labour costs but they are going to countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and even to Malaysia. in 2018 Vietnam attracted FDI double that of India, a country some one-fifteenth size of India. One refrain constantly heard is that India is a 'tough place to do business', a euphemism for bureaucratic corruption and inefficiency. The system is simply extremely corrupt and nobody is even pretending to change it. Very poor infrastructure- in the entire Bangalore city one cannot find just a kilometre of decent road, not joking-- a dearth of skilled people - a big Taiwanese infrastructure building firm had to import civil engineers from Thailand as most Indian engineers were found to be of very poor quality, and a host of other problems that Dr Basu has explained lucidly. Anyway, most of us love to live in a fool's paradise. Best compliments to Dr Basu and look forward to seeing more videos that objectively and incisively analyse the issues of the Indian economy.

Thirty years ago is when India lost out on foreign investment. Most western countries preferred the China model and still do. There will never be western investment in India. Years of cronyism, corruption and short term profits have wrecked India as a destination. Hope prevails, and the usual bombast for the sake of political expediency. It will not happen for India.

...China has 1 major advantage over India. China,'s centralized govt can "direct and order" what, where, when and how industries can be located and developed. And, Beijing don't even had to explain its strategy to the province. Whereas the Indian individual states which are governed by different political parties. And they will and had "fight among themselves" and/or offered a myriad of incentives in order to attract each and every types of FDI. Furthermore, Beijing had already build and continue to built interconnecting and essentail road, rail, ports and other infrastructure and logictic, incl international standard airports to support existing and new industries. India has few of such things, at least at the moment, that could attract FDIs. Furthermore China had build and could use its vast foreign reserves to built new infrastructures. In short China "build it and they will come" and they choose to remain, also. (Remember THE FIELD OF DREAM). India's FDI strategy is focused on comparative (low) cost. In reality, industries moving out of China, are mainly Chinese owned labor intensive industries. And they are moving and/or had moved to ASEAN and newly emerging African countries. Therefore India is the unlikely destination for foreign industries moving out of China.

India was to quick to change labor laws for massive investment by U.S or big international companies to move there. China never change their labor laws. Once an investor go into China, the terms of the agreement remain the same for the duration of the agreed duration. It was the U.S that changed their laws not China.

Excellent analysis once again. It needs lot of courage to reveal the facts. Every educated and well read citizen of india will fully agree and support to whatever said in the presentation. FDI is just a eyewash to keep average Indian confused and their attention away from the precarious financial status, the country is in. The current poor status of affair is also the result of weak opposition,so in the coming elections everyone must think about right kind of balance of power at the centre.

@@itsparthapratim The FY 2019 number would have included a one-off $16 Bn from Walmart-Flipkart. So, if 64 is nominally right, it is still not reflective of the actual annual trend of FDI. Besides, you are comparing numbers from two sources that calculate them differently. For example, the ET article you quoted also says that 2015-16 FDI was 55 Bn USD. But you have claimed 44Bn as per World Bank data. To get the right picture, it is better to stick to one definition of FDI and one source of comparison, as both definition and method differ between reports. For example, even the time periods may differ - calendar year vs Indian fiscal year. Makes the comparison utterly useless.

He made some good points, but it felt kinda prejudiced since he only spoke about 1 side of the story. He glorified china a bit too much, here are some of it's darksides : 1. China is a communist nation and offers even lesser transparency than India, extortion is worse (we all know how CCP cracked down capitalist companies and billionaires like Jack maa and his company, it even cracked down on celebrities, because it's not your money, it's our money!) 2. We all know how transparent china was during initial stages of covid (it said it can't transfer from human to human initially), they even made it seem like they were alright. Since china controls what gets in and out of china, nothing can be believed. 3. The kind of lockdown china did was ridiculous, it even put wooden planks outside of people's door so that they wouldn't be able to come outside. While such harsh methods might be effective in controlling covid, that is a double edged sword, it shows what kind of an oppressive authoritarian regime China is. 4. US-china tradewar, US is sanctioning china in different ways and suggesting it's investors to not invest in China. 5. China has made a lot of foes in the past decade. 6. FDI skyrocketed in India in 2020 (so, there's some truth to the FDI shifting from China to India afterall!). Though the large scale migration mightn't happen altogether, some investment is definitely going to flow into India.

The great unmatchable strength of the Chinese government, is its phenomenal abilities to learn from past mistakes. Several historical events can lead to such a conclusion. One of them is the China's unconditional support for the USA's recovery from 2008 financial disaster. The USA didn't show any gratitude, but started a so called trade war in 2018. Now 3 years later, the economy is in deep trouble, a tsunami is approaching. The new government is stupidly trying harder and sneakier to exploit China, other than cordially seeking help, from China, to restore the economy. We have all seen what happened, China will not give a dime again to help the USA. And only a fool will do that given what China has experienced. The same case applies to India. India the county generally speaking, from top down, holds a strong hostile attitude towards China, and almost all major media daily repeat the same rhetorics as routine exercises. In 2005 China officially recognizes Shihkim to be part of India, for demonstrating good faith in rebuilding a better Sino-India relationship. However what developed later has been proved it went the opposite direction. What we all have seen is, when China was in the most difficult times, such as the Covid hit hard in Wuhan, India has always 毫不犹豫地落井下石, 坑人不利己, so China government learnt from there and adopted strategy accordingly. I don't believe strategically China can benefit anything by direct investing in India other than just be a player to compete passively against other players. For instance the High Speed Rail program vs Japan. Win or loss, China will not gain.

India should stop comparing itself with China. The day is not far when china would rule India. Bcoz in every Indian market there will be only chinese money and money. Indian economy is declining at the same speed that chinese economy increasing. We all should accept the reality India is still a third world country , very much similar to poor African countries in every sense. On the other side China is now a Global Super Power which has already won the third world war without even the knowledge of rest world. Its a truth but bitter for almost all Indians. I am also an Indian. All the above is just an anger as it hurts a lot when I see how a bunch of elites and a group of their pets or goons can easily wash a billions of brains in a very well designed way and ruining down a nation in such a glamorous style.

@@jollymail1 So, you’re expecting me to lay down a reform agenda here? The point being, there are plenty of constructive suggestions made in opinion pages, and the ideas have existed for many years. So just because a specific video mocks the government does not mean constructive suggestions have not been made. India’s economy is in shambles, and it is important to call out policy inaction. This thread is unnecessarily defensive about the government. Noone is ‘backstabbing’ our competence; hell, if opinions could affect competence. More than anything, infrastructure growth is at the slowest pace due to troublesome land acquisition problems and other red tapes. Also it is not that hard to see the evidence from performance of infrastructure companies/sector lacklustre financials and growth and disinterest from stock market perspective. If India was “heavily” investing in infrastructure then stocks of such companies would be one of the top performers, which is clearly not the case.

The biggest factor for a business to set up is the availability of market even if in the middle of Amazon forest! Sir when there is rain everywhere is greenery. What you see round is the best example. INDIA lacks as per me basic thing that is acceptance of self. We call ourself agro based but there is no investment. I find is very hard to accept that not a single piece of agro based jeans that is made in any govt institute but there is KRISHI MANTRALAY. So to look forward see BRAZIL who took its cattle seriously and invested in them shamelessly and if I am not wrong today BRAZIL is few of countries exports not only dairy product but also cattle jeans for better and healthy cattle growth culture. Liked your episode. Hope to see more episodes with more solutions and less questions.

You r expecting too much ....one has to make a beginning .Earlier govts made blunders where by we lost FDIs .However , our awful infrastructure, our terribly corrupt babu systems , labor laws in line with companies abroad , land laws etc have been deterrent. Thanks to Congress falling to pressure of a smallest of small group . In 2013-14 , they left government with projects hanging worth Rs. 8000,00 lakh crores .No one realizes that Singapore became independent in 1965 and overtook India .Our total leaning to Soviet block made our labor , govt system etc lethargic and kept piling losses in govt run factories for years together and none was ready to displease those... INDIAN IRON AND STEEL CO , for example , paid salaries to about 5000 staff ( labor + office) for several years without producing a milligram of steel ..Only rich country can afford such a luxury .Privatisation was ,as a result , became an inevitable choice ....and was opposed for the fear of loss of aristocracy by employees ....

Of course , because india is full of people like , who doesn't follow rules, regulations, who just wait for other person to turn just to snatch from below. As indians itself doesn't believe among them ,then who else would ? It is the Gene infused in to Indians blood, from pre independence and post independence. Not the effect of last 6 years. We want others to follow the rule, but we don't want to follow. The world has seen it when the strict regulations on traffic were implemented, and how it suffered a huge protest from people.Until we Indians get aligned properly, world won't align with it. Don't hope for these things to change if another government comes to power at centre. It would actually worsen the situation, because we have seen 65 + yrs of ruling...😂😂

The one question I wish the speaker answers, “what is the de risking strategy corporates will need to do ?.”. Note that having the entire manufacturing concentrated in china I feel is the one major resin that global economy has come to a halt now I am astonished how board members across the globe have not seen this risk . Even in the case of data protection disaster recover sites are a must corporate audit team takes this seriously but how done in the case of manufacturing this was let loose. And if the speaker feels that this will not be addressed even now then we are only preparing ourselves for the next disaster. I hope the speaker answers this . Insidentally was it coincidental that the speaker was wearing red or is this one more made in china stuff !!.

@@shreyasshah2353 The Indian govt campaign is targeted at multinationals, especially American and European. Not at India companies, because most Indian companies do not have much investment in China anyway! Even Lava is not moving 800Cr from China, as the news story mixes moving with future (non-committed) investment. Lava is also an odd case that was slow to move, even after Chinese competition like Xiami, Oppo etc started production in India. And, reality is very different than announcements especially for companies like Lava and Micromx who have lost massive marketshare to Chinese (esp Xiaomi). They are now able to sell mainly in segments that Chinese don't compete in. Like very low end cheap phones, and that is also getting killed by the likes of Jio selling their own basic and cheap 4G handsets. The video makes simple points - 1. Most international companies will stick to China, esp if they want to tap Chinese market. 2. the companies moving some production out of China for more choice are going to countries like Vietnam and Thailand, because Indian govt has failed to address basic problems of industry.
