I think in a way, the sudden tonal dissonance of the happy ending represents how her story/trauma instantly goes back to being unimportant when the prince rescues her. His adventure of rescuing her narratively needs to finish with a happy ending and a triumphant embrace and ultimately her trauma and abuse have no room in his story's happy ending

I think the happy ending is actually really interesting- there's this incredible tonal dissonance- it feels both like a loving apology from the creators for what they put her through, and also in a way, the impact of knowing that even the happiest ending wouldn't suddenly make it all ok for her.

I think it's a good representation of the media that it's making a commentary on. We never see the princess' story in their words. The ending of the game is just like the ending of other games doing this concept unironically. They aren't going to mention the trauma that's going to inevitably bubble up in the princess. The story is about the knight. Not the princess. Even if we know what happened to her, she will still never heal from the pain that she's suffered from because she was never the focus. She is the prize at the end. Who knows if she'll ever heal. Quite ingenious of an ending I think.

Honestly, a lot of people say the good ending is underwhelming but, I genuinely think it’s suppose to be from the view of the prince the last few seconds (especially with the pixel art) as in the transition to her into pixel art she looses the dirt from her feet, the grime on her skin and so on. I think this purposely was suppose to be the princes view of “oh she’s ok! Nothing really too bad happened to her!! Because I saved her!!” Meanwhile the princess is going to have to live with what happened in that tower mentally and maybe silently

Hearing the princess narrating what she've been through, what she has been almost through is like receiving a hug, someone telling me "It's okay what you've been through, you must continue... I'd want a sequel where the princess is saved but she has to live knowing the horrible things happened to her. Though she's back to her blissful old life, everything is different due to that traumatic experience. For the rest of the game you have mostly pixle parts(because her life is "better" now) but it still has what's going on in her head. I just thought that would be interesting.

That would be somewhat boring, None wants to see the daily life of a traumatized princess with no gameplay at all but just whatever you imagined? i mean holy shit i'd die out of boredom. All I can say is damn. I am so glad I am discovering this now, and not 5 years ago. This would have totally broke my sensitive self back then. This game is beautifully haunting to say the least. I love how it shows the realistic reality of the princess. In other games, we usually play as the prince with all the adventure and glory to behold. But this is something amazingly odd. The art style of this game makes this 10x more creepy and I love that. I'm glad this masterpiece was found. There isn't many games like this.

Watching this has really got me thinking about how giving up can seem so simple, but that recovery never looks like recovery. When I was younger, I was abused pretty badly. I coped in a lot of similar ways to the princess. It wasn't good. In one ending, she gives up. It gets her out of the situation, but it also means she's dead. In the other, she's just immediately better? Which makes no sense until you realize it's from the dude's POV. To him, she did get better immediately because everything we've been hearing her say has been in her head. He can't see how dark it gets, he expecting his rescue to save her and while it did keep her alive, it was too late to truly get her back. She will never be the same, but he doesn't know that.

I think the ending would be better if the princess started crying and saying stuff such as “i was starting to lose my mind” or “I thought you’d never come” while the prince just held and comforted her, maybe even show the princess believing that her mind was playing tricks on her until the prince somehow managed to convince her he was real, and only after she started to feel better they would slowly make their way down the tower, the prince just carrying the princess, happy that he got to her but worried because of her condition. It would be good if they added some dialogue like the prince telling the princess to keep her eyes closed or something due to all the corpses left after he burst into the tower, or him asking her what they did to her, etc. Extra points if the prince actually has a brain and understand how awful it must’ve been for her. And then after the “going down the tower” sequence roll a image of them out of the tower, just looking at the sunset or smt, maybe a little dialogue from the princess here as well? (Maybe I could make a narrative version of this :^) But I think the ending was still ok, if I were playing from the prince’s perspective it would make total sense and i guess that was the whole point lol the devs clearly knew what they where doing

I think if after this ending from the knights pov happens, then it flashes back to the door opening from the princess's pov and epic but slightly ominous music plays as they exit the evil area (which is apparently full of some kind of plague/toxic aura given the lumpy bird and the princess saying she saw a lot of critters around the tower die) and the princess expresses her worries. Perhaps the evil castle begins to crumble after the knight dispels the miasma or something, after all the duke is said to be a dark mage and the knight has a flaming sword kinda like Pontiff Sulyvahn from Dark Souls

I think the message might be about how much we tend to dwell on our own shortcomings, which is what most of the game is. Most if not all of the dialogue is the princess explaining how miserable she is, and her descend into madness. Every other part of the game, the happy parts specifically, or the ones told through the more enjoyable life of the knight, is in a pixel art style. Obviously this change of art style is a metaphor for the story becoming complex or in more literal words, three dimensional. OR it could be about how the perspective of women is not usually told in stories, and how much worse they are treated. idek

I'm here from izzzyzzz's vid too (tho a few months late). I thought I'd enjoy this but actually I think I get why the reviews seemed to be so mixed. It's a good game for sure, I really love the sound and voice acting for the princess (princess' spoken dialogue is a lot less awkward sounding than the text which helps), but it also feels a little like it's commodifying the suffering of women, y'know? Like, it lowkey feels like the dev just made this bc "oooh edgy idea, critics are gonna love this", which leaves a bad taste in my mouth bc of how serious the topic of the game is and how much it mirrors actual women suffering irl. Also there's the fact that the entire thing is so frustrating and depressing to watch as a woman that even if it's a few minutes long it'd ruin my day, and I'd hate actually "playing" everyday for a week. (Endings were fine though, I think they achieved the goal of showing how ridiculous the prince's fun adventure actually is compared to the more psychologically horrifying princess' suffering.)

I agree the endings were great, I think a secondary part to the good ending that shows the princess has psychological trauma (it could be as simple as her mentioning having nightmares, or as complex as glitching the graphics out and/or putting the Duke's face on a mirror or something for a second that the princess looks at, screams, and runs to the knight, showing the Duke is forever in her brain)
@TheRealBellatrixLestrange
@TheRealBellatrixLestrange 2 жыл бұрын
@@aquabluerose7734 I think they didn't because they want to highlight the fact that usually the trauma she goes through is glossed over. The games usually end with "he saved the fair princess. They wed and lived happily ever after," without giving too much mind or time to what she's gone through. They wanted to give the "happy ever after" in an eerie way that makes you question it.

the way this game uses guilt tripping reminds me of a roblox game, i think it was flowers for the moon or something? basically, i've been seeing a part of the game on tiktok where a patient is laying, hopeless in a bed, saying "please don't leave me here". i think the princess displays something like that, but definitely way darker. you feel bad for her and want to keep her company for as long as possible, and check in on her everyday. you slowly watch her become more and more depressed, like a banana going bad. her life transforms into a gloomy, rotten atmosphere in seconds. wow. that would really make me want to stay.

Would have liked to see more mixed feelings in her monologue instead of just pure full blown depression, like hopeful in the first few days, her pride as a princess or as a woman, revenge thoughts towards the duke, or her attachments towards her family or the knight, worrying about their wellbeing. but even then, i don't think that would've fit. she doesn't know that he's coming or not, and she's praying that she is. take notice of her dress in the beginning and her dress as we see her throughout the game. she has already been raped, by the duke or the handlers as she came there. even with the hope of a prince coming, do you think she would have the will to even believe that he is going to rescue her?

Okay, I have a theory. She was most likely kidnapped as a child, as i'm pretty sure on day 5 or 6 she says something around the words of "What if this was my life all along?". Again not sure if she did say something along the lines of that but if so she's slowly realizing the truth of her life. The duke kidnapped her at a young age ex. when she was born (Like Rapunzel) and was SA her and she began to refuse when she began getting her period causing her to get beat. Consider the fact to support this when she says "The duke will not be able to use what is in between my legs". Another thing that might be something for how she was kidnapped as a very young child is the voices in the background, singing. It could be her mother singing a lullaby. I'm done!

@@Gru..-I feel like any of those typical "it was all in her head" theories REALLY takes away from how good this game is. Everything, literally everything (how the game is designed, the art style and 2d/3d change, the music,..) makes this a critique of the typical "save the princess" trope. In all games with those tropes, the prince saves the princess and all goes back to normal, they live happily ever after. But you can't just live happily and go back to normal after going through such an extensive trauma. She'll never be the same, but of course that doesn't matter to the player, it's just a game after all. Also in those games the player always looses/dies many times before actually managing to save the princess, so what if he doesn't magically come back to life? Then she doesn't get saved. That's the other reality of that trope. So no, it's not just her imagination. It's the other side of the typical "save the princess" story,*her* story, the reality. But in those stories the princess gets saved, so she gets saved too.

The game as a whole seeks to conrast the bombast of a knight's adventure to the horrible reality of the captive princess, and the "good" end can be interpreted as the erasure of the princess's suffering for the sake of the knight's victory. However, I wish the good ending had explored this phenomenon from the princess's perspective. She might reflect on how the hero's arrival and their homecoming will be the glorious final scene of the tales told of her daring rescue, and no one will write about the long days she lay bedridden from the physical and mental trauma or the nights where dreams of her ordeal caused her to wake screaming and crying. Actually, what I really wish is that the knight could carry her home, stay by her side as she heals her wounds, and help her face her demons. But then, that really would be a fairy tale.

I don’t think she was actually SA’d, but I think she was planning to be though (By the duke) , because at 23:11, she starts off with “If I finally make a decision tonight” which means she killed hersef before it could happen but I could be wrong

Thank you for playing through this & uploading it, at the same time I'm so sorry you had to play through this... interesting game. I'm gonna be so real, it may just be because I'm used to dark stuff, but this kind of left me disappointed by how much it was hyped up. It wasn't as scary or unnerving as I had assumed. Of course this IS dark but not as much as it could've been. I get the impact the good ending was going for & the bad ending too, but it just really felt lack luster. Idk, call me a cynic ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
