Still the little band that could. 😊 Like it or don't, Bayside always had a way of getting meaning out. I always felt like Anthony could tell any story he wanted to. Along with everyone else, with their classic sound, they can do whatever they want.

these comments bashing the video...not sure how many of you actually have listened to the song all the way through. PAY ATTENTION cus I'm only saying this once! MARY IS DEAD. That's why they look the way they do. the lyrics talk about him meeting Mary, and he says "she said I'm gonna make it out night" then eventually by verse 3 he says "when I lit her candle never thought to cry" which is an obvious implication she's dead. Then proceeds to change it to "you WERE gonna make it out one night" ("were" as in past tense as if she's not around anymore) & suddenly "cus Mary you never were the staying kind" takes a whole new meaning. They're supposed to look unhappy this whole video.

So I randomly decided to listen to Bayside today on Spotify for the first time In many years. I lost interest in them after their first couple albums. So I listened to Vacancy, and I was pleasantly surprised. In my opinion, this song is great. The video is actually quite artsy to me. There are so many things going on both happy and sad and colorful and vibrant, yet the song still leaves you feeling kind of "meh" afterwards. Super catchy tune. I dig it. This and "I've Been Dead All Day" are my favorites off the album so far.

I think that feeling is intentional. The song seems to be about loss and grief and trying to cope with watching the life leave the eyes of someone who had such big dreams. So I definitely think we were meant to begin the song with high hopes, and leave in emotional shades of blue and gray.

I love Bayside, but this song would speak so many more volumes if it wasn't addressed to "Mary". A lot of their songs address a specific person, but I'd feel better if they addressed the audience. Still a good message, nonetheless and different video. Happy to see something different.

I'm fairly certain this is an artistic piece commenting on the story from the song "Those Were The Days" by Mary Hopkins which tells a story of Mary and her friends who all used to hang out at the tavern and dream big together. But as time passes they all become old and separated. But Mary never loses hope that she'll see them again. Unfortunately this song seems to take it a step further into the main character's alleged death. Thus bringing closure to the tavern (the bar she lived above) and Mary and her friend group.
