This is the third part of a trilogy. You Made Me Want to Be a Saint, Cul-De-Sac, Cardinals. Each song explains one part of the story. Just read the lyrics of each song and it tells the story in full. Dan Campbell is a lyrical genius. I'm completely blown away...

My theory you ask? The guy in the music video being carried by soupy signifies Mike Pelone, a friend of the band who died in 2010. The ambulance is a symbol of the help Mike needed when he was addicted to drugs looking for his "pill bottle vision quest", the ambulance is also a symbol about Mike who was in the band "Emergency and I". Soupy wants him to call him back but he knows he won't "because nobody's listening" (cul de sac). Soupy refers to himself as being selfish, the guilt comes from him being to busy whilst recording the upsides to spend time with his troubled friend. And we all know what the devil in his bloodstream stands for. By the end of the video soupy can't get to the help, he was too late, unfortunately

Thank you for this song/video/album. I lost my best friend to heroine and I can't talk about it adequately but when I hear your music it's exactly what's on my mind. Seeing this video tears me to shreds, doing everything you can do but being just out of reach. Failure clinging to you, loneliness, sadness. I still think about him every day. Last November you guys played here in Buffalo and when you played this and Cigarettes and Saints, I openly wept, in public. It just felt like for a moment I wasn't alone in these awful feelings and I can't express enough that what you're doing is meaningful and please, keep doing it.

my brother died a little over a year ago, he was only 26, this song always makes me think of him. he was fighting so much, our mom died when we were so young, he struggled with addiction and was in and out of jail most of his adult life, and i lost him to an overdose just over a year ago. fentanyl. i wish more than anything that i couldve saved him. this music video makes me burst into tears every time. we're no saviours if we cant save our brothers. rest in peace trevin, you're not forgotten💛

the most powerful part of this video for me is how the song and the lyrics tie together. he says "i'll never let you down again" and in the end of the video when mike fails to get the help he needs and the abulance drives off dan just sits there holding him realizing he will have to continue to hold and carry the burden for failing him the rest of his life

These guys deserve so much more attention. This song and music video are so damn powerful. The camera angle switching to the side and showing other people in the background is pure genius imo. It just shows this disparity between Soupy's reality who could not save his friend and the reality of the people just living their everyday life and starring at him while he "fights for his life".
@BurnieSides
@BurnieSides 9 жыл бұрын
for those who don't know, this song refers to the song "we wont bury you" off of their album, the upsides. To make a long story short, one of Dans' childhood friends, Mike Pelone, died of a drug overdose a few years ago. in "we won't bury you", Dan revealed that before he found out what happened to Mike, he left a message on his voicemail saying that he was worried about him and that he wasn't about to bury his friend. The line "So if you call me back or let me in, I swear I'll never let you down again" in this new song is saying that if he called earlier and let Mike open up to him, he might have been able to save his life. However, the music video tells a different story. It shows Dan carrying a person symbolizing Mike, and we are led to believe that he is trying to save him from overdosing, trying as hard as he can to catch up with the ambulance in front of him but failing. with this in mind, the video contradicts the lyrics of the song suggesting that the lyrics are too optimistic, and that Dan isn't sure if he could have made a difference if he was given a second chance to save his friend.

I love this song, my awesome son brought me to a Summer Festival at Pier 17 on top of a tall building in front of the George Washington Bridge, it was like 110 degrees. I’ve been begging him to take me to see the Wonder Uears ever since I heard this song. It came out right after my daughter Raven Jessica (forever 30) passed away, unfortunately to an overdose. So, yes this song is special to us. Vinnie got the Cardinal from the album tattooed on his right shoulder in honor of his sister, and has the lyrics “I know the devil you’ve been fighting with” it’s beautiful. I love and miss my daughter every day... TIP baby girl Mommy loves you...

i recently lost one of my friends and this song is hitting me so hard right now. We had a falling out last time we spoke, and i had tried to reach out to you before all of this happened but you would never respond. I knew you had mental problems with depression and feeling alone. you were so hard for people to understand and get along with but i understood you and you were such a beautiful person. these lyrics are hitting me. "so will you call me back and let me in , i swear ill never let you down again. I know the devil youve been fighting with, i swear ill never let you down again." "i should have been there when you needed a friend". I miss you man. idc if we left on bad terms you were still my friend. and your artwork will be on my skin for the rest of my life and i just miss you right now. i wish you would have called me or something when you werent able to deal with all of the shit you were going through i would have been there.i would have tried to save you but i couldnt. "were no saviors , if we cant save our brothers". i will save everyone else from now on. i hope youre at peace now. There is no word for good bye in my native language. so i will only say i will see you soon my friend. R.I.P shane. ill save my left sleeve for you to finish up in the next life. My brother and I no longer have a relationship. We live in the same house and never speak to each other. I don't fight his battles with him like I'm supposed to. I blame it on the fact that I pushed him around so much as a kid. His desire to be my brother died slowly over time. What ever sense of duty he felt to continue letting me back in eventually went away. I'd kill to have a second chance. This song hits harder than TWY probably intended. But this is absolutely what it is like knowing you let someone who looked up to you, down.

This is so awesome. Has anyone noticed the amount of 3/4 time signatures being used in pop punk recently?

loving the subtle parallel between this video and the 'cigarettes and saints' video. in this one, soupy and the guy he's carrying are soaking wet, and in cigarettes and saints, the girl fills her bag with rocks and gets ready to jump into a lake, implying she's about to commit suicide by drowning. seems like soupy was too late to save his friend but hopes their music can save others from the same fate

Yup, It's pretty obvi that it's a nightmare situation, I mean common the ambulance driving away running with your friend with the EMT telling you to catch up, it's contradicting itself
