People tell me I'm too negative so for a change of pace I'm going to say a bunch of negative things about a rifle I really like. The HOPMOD SPR, a rifle inspired by my desire to combine a stainless steel barrel and a LaRue handguard.

Improvements can be made to most firearms: be it the design, minor details, or even basic things like accessory configuration. I myself NEED to get an SBR eventually because physically I am weird in prepositions in terms of arm length with joint issues.

I built a SPR with an 18" polygonal rifled barrel, with the proper brake & collar, but using the Geissele mk4 and the now-discontinued* Super Tricon trigger, almost eight years ago. Just like every Larue product, I’ve been seeing a lot of the M-Lok handguards from them recently due to the price and quality. Only to learn they discontinued them for literally no reason months ago and they’re now unobtanium. Thanks Larue. Because taking away a great handguard option to offer that atrocity of an iron sight system is totally a good trade off.

Yeah, I also went with the viper pst in a qd mount on an 18" spr build with an spr / heavy barrel. I put the suppressor on that thing and my God... Thing is an absolute anchor. It's fun as hell to shoot especially with handloads stacking holes at 100 yards, but I gave up putting a light and backup irons on it because it's too heavy for anything other than range fun lol.

This is quite similar to my SPR build, I went with the 16" SS-BA-midlength for soft-shooting, and to cut OAL with a mounted suppressor. I currently shoot a load that runs the Hornady 68gr BTHP, that delivers 2960fps at the muzzle. For me, this load is still doing about 1200FPS at 1000yds. While maybe not as accurate as a 6.5 creed at that distance, I'm still getting lethal accuracy and knock down power from a much smaller lighter gun. Maybe not clone correct, but certainly fits a certain SAWC model better than a lot of other guns that claim to be SPRs.

Sometimes a rifle that you like is the best kind. This one has great precision, is able to reach out and is soft shooting. What's not to like? Looking forward to the Urban SPR by Brass Facts. Even better if it has a scope that has been reviewed by C_Does. I just wish there was a light weight MPVO that doesn't cost as much as the Leupold Mark 5 which sell in excess of 2K dollars. A good MPVO that is light weight with good glass under 1K would be a home run for a MOD SPR build.

I ended up building an SPR of sorts when I had a UBR gen2 and Aero lower that I wanted to do something with. I originally went with the philosophy of a soft shooting and enjoyable rifle much like my Colt A2, though with modern amenities (also because I feel shameful for wanting to modify my AWB era Colt in any way), so ideally a 20" rifle length gas barrel, rifle length buffer, 2 stage trigger, and MLOK handguard was what I had in mind. It quickly set course for an SPR with my shopping spree at Brownell's, acquiring an 18" 1:7 5R rifled barrel, a barrel which would most likely be more accurate than my current skills. I want to get some glass for it, still kinda lost as to what exactly I'm looking for. So far all I've done with it is zero the MBUS Pro irons, but it shoots as smoothly as I'd imagined it to be. Currently waiting on an upper and 15" S-One handguard from Aero to arrive, I first built the rifle with an upper/handguard combo from a BF deal on MidwayUSA I'd got a couple years ago (for those curious, it's identical to James' upper/handguard used in the budget build-off video)

Faxon Gunner is the most slept on barrel for general purpose use. And unless your full auto dumping, the "accuracy loss" is barely anything, and a non issue unless your doing PRS shit. Semi auto rifles just do not get as hot as people think they do. So much untrue garbage spewed about modern pencil profiles.

I got a faxon gunner 18" and an elcan on mine right now. You have convinced me to get a 2-10x that and taking it out to 500, it's very light and fun to shoot. Haha far away steel go ping!

I’m in almost the same boat, same barrel with a 1-4 LPVO, but a 2-10 would make way more sense for what I’m doing.

I got a 1.93 scope mount for my 14.5" with a PST g2..... And can totally use like a RDS, although shooting at 100+ yards I really get parallax issues if my cheek weld isn't perfect. Still get -1.5moa with ball ammo though

I built my bastardized version of a MK12 Mod 0 a while back using a 18” BCM upper and it’s one of my favorite rifles to shoot at the range. If I were to do it all over again I would probably go 14.5”. I love the performance out of the 18” but when you throw a can on it, it gets a little unwieldy.

I love spr type builds cuz they r fun…still waitin on my can (aem5) but I went with a triarc 16” barrel….heavy but more accurate than I am…and had a knights mk12 mod1 hand guard lyin around …said why not hack one together haha…spikes lower with a jp silent buffer and a hiperfire eclipse trigger …pure hack job

I’ve been running superlative arms gas blocks with no issues. I always run them in the bypass mode so there is minimal carbon fouling if any.

Features that are indicative of promoting accuracy: free float handguard .223 wylde chamber (or 6.5creed if you're going bigger) Stainless barrel (cold hammer forged if possible) Bull or heavy barrel/ next would be fluted bull barrel/ full taper barrel 5R rifling 1/7 twist rate. A faster twist rate will stabilize heavier 70+gr projectiles. Which carries more momentum to further distances machine crowned muzzle light trigger (preferably a Geissele) low round count Things not to have: NO chrome lined barrels - ch lining is a physical additive layer that is hard to get consistent thicknesses No piston gas system. DI allows the barrel to whip more freely with less anomalies no light weight rifles. The heavier it is, the more it settles down and the better you can see your shots through the glass

Interesting timing on this. Recently I went deep into the MPVO world. I found the SwampFox Warhawk 2-10 and was stoked. It’s like an slightly optimized PST II or budget MK5HD 2-10. The problem is with their engagement mount it was about 40oz. I’m bummed that the optic manufacturers no longer seem to prioritize weight. I’m going to try and salvage the Warhawk by pairing it with a PLX mount (saves a few ounces). But I’ve found that 2016 era of 3-9x scopes like the Leupold VX-R and Trijicon Accupoints look very attractive. They are SFP, fixed parallax, but amazing glass, Mil-reticles, and featherweight (13-15oz). I plan to compare one to the Warhawk for the next 6-12 months and see what I prefer.

FYI - the 18" SPR Fluted Stainless barrel is less than 5 oz heavier than your 16" vs the 41oz QPQ barrel. I stuck with the QPQ barrel for my MK12.

You’re rifle looks a lot like mine, I started out wanting something simple & quickly put high magnification glass on it & it’s amazing how accurate it is. Burris makes a scope Mount with pic rails on the top caps, so guess where my red dot went. A little slow & heavy & admittedly overbuilt, but it checks all the boxes & does what I want it to… sorta.
