Got to hear a Veterans Day presentation by a Capt that was a team member of the blue angles today. It was a special day. I also took my new high school rc club to meet some vets at our local rc flying field. Would love to send you photos. All this started because of your Chanel and help getting me started this fall. LOVE your videos, Dude! I was just flying my Blue Angels 80mm Eflite last Saturday afternoon. It flies great. Its not as fast as yours, though, for some reason. Love the sound of the EDF, so turbine-like! Like the sequencing gear doors. That sliding plastic strut I simply replaced with an aluminum tube, and have not had any problems with the nose gear since. The 80mm battleship-gray F-16 is the best, along with the 90-mm Viper, which is now my favorite jet!

Mixes are pretty handy im finding out more and more. I only have a dx6e but lately Ive been really paying attention to what you have been able to do with the setups on models that don't have flaps. I thought it was pretty cool when you set up flaperons on the umx citation. I definitely agree with you on those options I like all my aircraft to have some sort of flaps or flaperons, and now on the bighorn I can mix a spoiler set up. I have flaps set up on channels 5 and 6 so they go the same way. It took me forever to set that up and figure out how to get those darn flaps to go the same direction. Glad I can program the radio how I want it. I dont have any different flight modes using the gear channel for flaps but thats ok. Great video I whatched the whole thing. I maidened mine yesterday. Unfortunately, I crashed it. It had an inherent right roll tendency that trimming didn’t help, and no amount of left roll input got it to roll that way. After about 30 seconds, it finally departed from controlled flight and ended up in a tree, destroying the airframe. At least the electronics are good, maybe I can get the ARF F-16. Wish I could’ve gotten more of an enjoyable flight on my dream plane, looks like yours was really stable.

What's up Brian, is there no getting rid of me. When i have a problem that needs solving i go to the source; with that being said; i'm having a problem assigning safe select to the same switch i always use on my Blue Angel; i use switch A on aux 2 on all my models but won't work on this one. I'm at a loss, stumped; tried it on aux 3 also; product description on the ar-636-b says it's just a sport receiver with AS3X 0nly with 3 gyro modes; no safe select flight envelope, any thoughts sir?
@BrianPhillipsRC3 жыл бұрын
I guess, maybe you're not BOUND right??? Try again, and do these steps... DOES THE PLANE DANCE TWICE AT STARTUP OR ONCE? Once = AS3X Only / Twice = SAFE Here's my stock reply - try this first... You CAN, and will after you follow these steps - I've had this comment from probably 50 or more, just as adamant as you, and they got theirs working ;) Step 1) Make sure you're BOUND with SAFE SELECT ON. If you're NOT 100% sure - DO IT AGAIN, and make sure the surfaces "Dance" through the mix TWICE at power up...NOT ONCE...Once means you're in AS3X only mode. Step 2) Go to MONITOR MODE, and watch the switch change the condition of the channel you THINK is assigned to the SWITCH YOU WANT TO USE - If it doesn't change state, go to System Setup and make the Channel Assignment to that switch. Now exit the menu and verify the changes took in Monitor Mode. Step 3) Now that you're 100% sure you're BOUND in SAFE Select, and you have an operational switch for channel (I think 5-8) assigned, go ahead and pull both sticks DOWN and IN, and then toggle the switch to a count to 10 (NOT 5)....most people don't count a FULL CYCLE of the switch...so they never get to 5 full back and forth cycles... On step 9 of 10, you'll see the surfaces twitch, and on 10 of 10 they'll "recenter" again. Here's PROBABLY what you're doing wrong...it's a super easy mistake to make, and you'll immediately get it if you are doing this wrong... Switch Up to Switch Down = 1 Switch Down to Switch Up = 2 Switch Up to Switch Down = 3 Switch Down to Switch Up = 4 Switch Up to Switch Down = 5 Switch Down to Switch Up = 6 Switch Up to Switch Down = 7 Switch Down to Switch Up = 8 Switch Up to Switch Down = 9 Switch Down to Switch Up = 10 (sometimes I just keep going to like 15 or something more crazy...you'll see the control surfaces move with each flip of the switch when you're got it.) When Horizon Hobby wrote those instructions they said 5 times, so this is what they meant, but it's confusing if not elaborated upon... Switch Up to Switch Down = 0 Switch Down to Switch Up = 1 Switch Up to Switch Down = 1 Switch Down to Switch Up = 2 Switch Up to Switch Down = 2 Switch Down to Switch Up = 3 Switch Up to Switch Down = 3 Switch Down to Switch Up = 4 Switch Up to Switch Down = 4 Switch Down to Switch Up = 5 ...pretty confusing, right??!?!? Step 4) The ONLY issue that might prevent this all from working is that your sticks are WAY out of calibration... if so, the Tx might not realize you're in the Lower Left or Lower Right position, thus preventing the designation when you hit flip 10... so if this ends up being the case, which I highly doubt, then you need to calibrate your sticks and then follow back from step 2 maybe. Good luck - you can do it!

What's up Brian, quick question? I just bought the Blue Angel and did the maiden today and i'm having some throttle cut issues with both my F-18 and my Viper. i been setting throttle cut at -130% here lately on my models and it's a good thing i do; with that being said when i kick throttle cut off and with the stick at the off position the engine is running at a slow idle and it takes -80 throttle trim to cut it off on both of them; what's up with that? Is that normal on some of the faster jets, have you ever experienced that before? Keep the videos coming you and camera crew love em'; i learn so much from the videos!!
@BrianPhillipsRC3 жыл бұрын
This has happened to me on a few occasions BECAUSE I was using the -130% setting as instructed by the manual.... I've adopted the policy that -100% and if there's an issue, change it then, and ONLY then. Remember, the throttle range will have a 30% (Well, actually 15%) difference between 0% and throttle cut, so this can cause the ESC to "start" without any input when you turn off the throttle cut... Anyway, I guess I would set the Throttle cut to -100% and then RE CALIBRATE your ESC's THROTTLE RANGE...which is what we just tried on a recent video (not released) and had issues getting into setup ;(

Flying a EDF at your house has got to be hard to do. I fly way out on final and bleed that speed over a long haul, I dont see how you do it on a driveway. Awesome to be able to fly at your home but EDF flying is dicy. You do good for the space though!

Yeah, it's tight...maybe 2.5 acres up front, but when we get the pond dug, we will hopefully have a dam runway...LOL this never gets old!!! When the dam runway is done, we will have a clearER access to the back part of our property, and the other property we own down the street. It will also allow for THREE crosswind strips, in addition to one step closer to the dam HANGAR (60'X80'X20' Building for full scale, RC storage, EBikes, and Agricultural Implements), and next the FULL SCALE strip. This will take out approaches to a new level (literally and figuratively).This will also give us the ability to film with the sunsets BEHIND us for better lighting OR in the event of AM filming, we can get the sun ALSO behind us, while still filming INTO the sunset/sunrise for those beautiful cloudy skies where everything is glowing pink and yellow and orange and grey - last night it looked like a UFO, the sunset was so pretty, BUT of course, I was CUTTING THE GRASS - Dang it! Oh well, maybe when this is all done, you'll think back to this comment and think - I HELPED HIM DO THAT!!! (...and you would be right, thanks!)

hi 1) If I want him to fly more than 10 minutes - can I put him a battery more than 3300? What is the maximum battery you have tried? 2) I could direct him to a calm flight like a trainer - right? This is more or less my level.
@BrianPhillipsRC3 жыл бұрын
This plane is NOT a trainer. Please hold off on it for now. It's not easy to fly, but it's EASIER with SAFE. You'll have a hard time getting larger than 4000mAh in there, but the plane kinda NEEDS about 5000mAh pack...so there's a bit of a conundrum to be dealt with ;)

@@BrianPhillipsRC i would keep the fan part of the edf but change the motor battery and maybe esc. Not sure what esc it comes with but you can get a 190-200a red brick esc from hk. You probably want the most speed possible so i would run a 6-12c battery which you have plenty of and im sure i could find a motor for under $100 that would make you respect it in a new way lol. Make a carrier catapult and the braking system I don’t think it will be hard for the braking.

I've seen a few guys use bottles of water, tied to a string, and they place that across the runway, then try to hook it. That would be COOL! I wonder how well the tail hook would work though. In a real plane, that hook is tied into the main frame of the plane, so in this case, I'd be hooking to a relatively weak spot on the plane.

Every few months I think I’ve made improvements in my flying skills and then I watch something like this. At the beginning of the video I’m thinking, “Brian’s not going to takeoff on the driveway. And if he does, where is he gonna land it?” Even if Brian ain’t got a lick of sense, Ms Phillips is there, she’ll talk him out of crashing a $500 jet. Then I thought, “What if I won a contest called, “Spend a day with Esteban” where you got to fly at Brian’s house while he and his family weren’t home. What planes would I bring to avoid the house, the trees, telephone lines, etc. Easy- Conscendo, Timber Turbo, ArrowsRC Viper and the Timber UMX. (Either small, or it has STOL, or it can land on grass) I’ve got some work to do on my landings. I remember when I was younger I actually met an F-18 Pilot. I asked him what it was like landing on a carrier. He told me- “Get a postage stamp, just one. Put it in the middle of your bed. Bring in a ladder into your room. Jump off the ladder towards the bed and try to land your tongue on the stamp.” That’s how I felt as I watched Brian land the Eflite F-18 on his driveway.... There was a lot of math in this video. I was doing a lot of “g-o-o-g-l-e-.-c-o-m” typing.

Your pitch up problem is from your CG, "I prefer it tail heavy" is the same as saying ' I like it pitching up". Put your battery fwd another inch Your landing issues stem from misunderstanding of the concept. When your landing throttle should be your altitude control, and your elevator is your speed control. Line it up, put it in a high alpha attitude, full flaps and reduce your throttle until it starts to drop. Then let if come down, using the throttle to control your decent, if your coming in to hot, more elevator to burn off the air speed, rudder to change direction, so your level off right as your wheels hit the ground and kill the throttle... That f18 can land and stop in the same distance as your take off. Also find your stall rate and practice high alpha flight just above the stall, but when doing that keep your altitude the same.. but do that high so you can recover when you hit the stall. It's not your skill that's making your landings look like they do, it's your understanding of the controls and the concepts of landing. You have the landing the fast fly bye, the bank and yank flying you is the easy part, I like your videos, and I understand these places are fun at full throttle, but what edf at full throttle isn't fun, or flys bad? Show me how it flies slowly, precisely, finesse fly it around and tell me how it flies, how's it's stall characteristics, does it feel like a brick in the sky, does it glide well? High alpha flight, does it turn like that? And it does hover with the right pack. You say the f16, you want something to do? Well I hope this comment gives you something to do, learn the hard skills of flying, that f16 has a bigger flight envelope is you want to learn to fly, if your Happy just yank and bank flying, maybe you can get a air brake so you don't get board with just flaps, or learn precision flying, it's yourself with how nice your landing can be, they all fly longer on half throttle. Good video, nice review, thanks for the time you put into this.. I look fwd to seeing how clean your flights get in the future. Watch Mike from precision airobatics on landing tutorials to see what I mean. By no means should you take this as harassment, or raging on you, you out having fun that's what it's about, in just making a suggestion, you have the passion, the planes and the batteries. I just think there's a whole side of flying that I get the idea you know you don't know about but I also think there is a lot you don't know, that you don't know about it. And that's slow controlled precision flight. You know that plane can do a level vertical decent and fly out of it, but you need to use the whole flight envelope.
@BrianPhillipsRC4 жыл бұрын
Okay... I think you may be taking what I said a bit farther than I meant for it to be taken. When I Was talking about "Tail heavy", I meant MORE tail heavy than nose heavy, but still in the proper CG range. I understand the concept of the CG and the pivot point and the levers that are created by the control surfaces, and flaps, and AOA and all that stuff, but understanding and execution are two totally different things. Most EDF Jets of recent vintage tend to need help to fair in a tight spot like ours. Case in point, the Viperjet...I loved flying her with the CG spot on, but I could never get the nose up on landing approaches without the plane slipping out from itself. The F-16 was similar, until I finally moved the battery back to make it MORE tail heavy. The F-18 could fly with the CG spot on, but getting the flair for landing helps so much. I'm not sure if you're missing how tight these quarters are, but I don't have enough space to make a relaxing glide slope....I MUST use full flaps and flare to get the planes down. I have to fly them into the runway... As my skills improve, I will do more of that. By typing it out, and "understanding" doesn't make it "easy" to execute. Not sure if you're aware, but I'm still a fairly new RC pilot (about 6 years). In my experience, doing all the stuff you suggest is "easier" off camera, and with more room, and low consequences (I.E. Not flying the plane for an audience and companies expecting good outcomes - this is NOT just for enjoyment, even though I DO enjoy it). I'm learning and have always pushed the envelope for flying in tight spaces, mostly out of necessity. Not trying to make excuses, but you're saying this all like it's super "easy" - if you haven't noticed, MOST can't even fly RC, let alone master these things on a brand new plane. Please realize I'm filming my real maiden flights. These hyper-specific skills come with practice, and even though the theory is relatively easy to type out, it's a whole different ball-game actually doing it, then doing it on camera, under pressure, and executing perfectly on the first, second, third flight? I'm definitely NOT saying I don't need to or can't improve, because I'm working on it and absolutely will improve, but to say these things like I've not been putting in the effort is, is hard not to take as an insult. I don't think you or many who watch this channel understand how much TIME goes into our little production. I work a 50-60 hours a week "day job", then spend hours a week filming, then maybe 10 more hours on comments. Can you help me understand when I should be out flying MORE? If I get my way, I'll be able to do this as my full time job, at some point in the very distant future, but this is far more than a hobby for me at this juncture. It's NOT like it was when I first got into RC. This is real work, and not saying I don't LOVE it, because I do....but it's time consuming, and difficult. P.S. Every minute I spend interacting with my audience is a minute I'm not spending flying, hanging out with family, mowing the lawn, taking care of other responsibilities - I walk a tight rope of time managment most don't understand....maybe you will more now
