Definatelly the P-51D. It flys better, and easier to take off and land, with it's wider wheel base, and I personally perfer the looks, and the flaps on the P-51D.... but my standard reply is going to stand here - Is it too much to ask for both??? - LOL - Get the P-51D, unless you're a sucker for the Spitfire. Thanks for asking - finally an easy question :)

Brian, wonderful demo, thank you for the details. I'm planning on picking up one today. Please explain in great detail your landing technique for this plane it looks like you cut throttle to maybe 20 %, keep nose level or slightly down, flare a couple of feet off the ground and cut throttle a foot off the ground ? - are you doing much with elevator or just a basic flare ?
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 5 жыл бұрын
This plane is a tough one to land, in that it loves to ground loop :( It's best to totally grease every landing, every time.... LOL ;) ....but really, it's not the easiest one from HH, in the 1.2m size class. If you want to maintain opposition to the ground looping, keep the tail wheel UP as long as possible! It's also awesome to watch one of these beauties balance on the mains as they roll down the runway!!! I don't cut throttle above the ground, I "Fly it on the ground"...it's same for a lot of other war-birds, you gotta kinda fly them into the ground, and keep your pitch inputs VERY subtle...USE THROTTLE to change your sink rate as you feel it into the ground, but always keep power on about 15-25% minimum until you're totally committed to the landing....especially if you land with flaps like me! Attempting to "glide" in for a landing is certainly possible, but you'll get burned for sure (I know caz I've got burns all over my body from doing it ;)

Thanks Paul! I love to be able to share with anyone interested! Collection is getting a bit larger, but my picks are becoming a bit more refined, and seem to survive a bit longer :) As for a simulator, I have two, but don't really use them hardly ever. My son likes to use them, but for me, it's gotta be the "Real deal"... PhoenixRC - I got from a buddy, when he decided to move on to metal detecting??? So I got it for a steal with a package of other goodies. I use a USB to transmitter adapter for this choice. "FMS" - Which IS freeware - I use a "Real Flight InterLink Plus Controller by Futaba" as my controller for FMS. I also have a free demo version of RealFlight, which is by far the best choice if you can handle the non-plane expense ;) Hope you come back for more!!!

Hi Brian, I just got back into the hobby after an almost 20 hiatus! I've been flying the foamies for about a month now and love them. I'm just about starting to understand how these Lipo batteries work too and I have one question about what you did in this video as I've heard mixed opinions on batteries and the ESC rating. Did you just throw in the 4s battery with the same ESC that came with the model? The reason I ask is that some people have told me that you can "burn out" that ESC if the battery voltage is too high and they recommend upgrading the ESC that can take the higher voltage. Or in this case is it okay cause you're only going from a 3s to 4s? Would love to know the answer because I do have both 3s and 4s batteries and just bought that same model yesterday, and you're absolutely right, it's a beautiful model!
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 6 жыл бұрын
You can get away with it sometimes, but other time - POOOF, it's on fire ;) They have ratings for 3S 4S 5S 6S, etc... then the current (amps) and you'll have to then balance that all against the fact that they're made in china, then compare the motor draw with the prop (particularly the aggressiveness of the pitch of the prop). It's on a case by case basis, BUT got with the stock specs and love it for a while, then move up if you're willing to fry it. You can also get a "WATT Meter" and test the load on the bench. They're not super expensive, and I use it from time to time. Some people get out graph paper and make schematics - I don't, I have a life (LOL! You know that's not true, as you can see my 1000's of hour long videos....)

You can buy the Spitfire from this link ( Spitfire 1.2m - amzn.to/2H7wW89 ), HorizonHobby.com, or your local hobby shop. This means you'll need a DSM2/DSMX transmitter. Here's some choices if you don't already have one... DX20 - amzn.to/2D3NIj8 DX18 - amzn.to/2Clv9Gh DX9 - amzn.to/2CMRKih DX8 - amzn.to/2qAy1xt ...and of course, you'll still need chargers and CA and other goodies...which you can also find link for in my description... I can't say for 100% sure if you can swap out the foam wheels for a more rubber wheel, but here's what I DO know... Here's a link for the stock wheel set... amzn.to/2RJJBzF ...but I must say, they're one of the most detailed tires on a foamy in the 1.2m size class, if you ask me...BUT If you insist on replacing them, get FREEWING wheels. They are some of the best, most supple rubbery feeling tires, while still being super light. Wish I could tell you the exact size...well, I can. I measured them at 3" outside diameter.

Will make for less stressful/more enjoyable flights at least for my skill level. I do like that James Bond Glider you have though with speed brakes and all.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 7 жыл бұрын
Well, the James Bond plane looks really good, but there are issues... It was only $150 + S&H, but it's got issues... It has a retractible motor system, but that has issues... It has retract main landing gear, but the servo came dead, and after replacing the servo, that one stripped on the first flight... It has beautiful, complex wing shape, but they aren't strong enough so they flex like crazy... It has a nice looking "t" tail, but it blows arround with wind from the motor... Sure the canopy is sweet looking, but it came with glue smeared on it brand new out of box.... It has a cool optional tow release hole, but it also lets dirt and debri in every landing... And on and on... I may just need to buy more expensive gliders.

I wouldn't do this FIRST. The Spitfire or the P-47 ( www.horizonhobby.com/p-47-12m-bnf-efl8450 Same price and same size class, still has SAFE Select and AS3X) are great 2nd or 3rd choices, since they do have SAFE, which really helps beginners to get over the paralyzing fear of learning to fly, but they are both low wing warbirds, with tons of torque roll. This makes them tricky to fly for a beginner. I would definitely recommend something a lot cheaper, that you can crash a ton before you have to throw it out. Here's a few choices. Keep in mind, I'm using an 18 channel transmitter, but you don't have to have that much of a transmitter to fly this plane. In fact, I think you can do everything I'm doing on this model with a DX8...which is a LOT less expensive. That being said, don't by radios every day, since now-a-days, you can use the same radio for (most) all of your planes, quads, and helicopter...I think I have over 35 aircraft in my radio... Organized in order of recommendation, and incidentally, also the highest priced to the lowest...I only chose RTF (Ready to fly) models, meaning they literally come with everything you need to fly! After you get to the point where you feel comfortable with your skills, you can start to look at a good transmitter, which will work with BNF (Bind and fly - you can use the transmitter of your choice, provided it's compatible)... www.horizonhobby.com/apprentice-s-15e--rtf-w-dxe-efl3100e www.horizonhobby.com/mini-apprentice-s-rtf-hbz3100 www.horizonhobby.com/product/airplanes/learn-to-fly-on-my-own/ultra-micros/sport-cub-s-rtf-with-safe-reg%3B-technology-hbz4400 www.horizonhobby.com/product/airplanes/learn-to-fly-on-my-own/ultra-micros/champ-rtf-hbz4900 www.horizonhobby.com/product/airplanes/learn-to-fly-on-my-own/ultra-micros/duet-rtf-hbz5300 Check these out, and then watch my videos and others on KZbin to help you decide about size and value and all that stuff. I can help you if you need it! FYI...I removed a two of your three exactly the same comments (not sure why that happens sometimes???)

Camofighter 1234. Beginners would do well crashing this pretty plane and even experts at times. My vote is for mini apprentice for fitting in the car but still big enough and powerful enough to fight the wind and take a good hit from a crash or two or thr-ix. getting the RTF version takes the frustration out of things.

I'm pulling 55A, 802Watts on a fully charged 4S 16.8V LiPo. I upgraded my ESC to 60A. More on my RCGroups.com blog here. www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2728753-E-flite-1-2M-Spitfire-Reference-SourceThe stock 40A ESC can only handle 4S for a short while. I think it will burn up the ESC if you run stock for too long.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 7 жыл бұрын
I think you're on to something, but keep in mind that often times static bench testing can yield higher load results that in real life. There are a few occasions where you might actually exceed a bench test energy load, but only if you're trying to power out of a stall, while falling backwards, for example. These events will almost certainly be very short lived, as you will necessarily gain speed, thus reducing your electrical load, as you accelerate. That's not to say that conditions can get more extreme, but I'd argue you'll be close to if not outright in spec 98% of the time. ...but don't let me stop you from doing what your think is right! There's plenty of room for us to disagree on this detail. Will you let me know how things work out?
@hifinsword
@hifinsword 7 жыл бұрын
That is what I've read too. The unloaded inflight demand should be about 15% less than the static load on the ground. That's why I picked a 60A ESC for mine. That gives me some overhead to work with. My static load on 3S is about 37A & 434W. So HH is OK with a 40A ESC. But my ESC was getting very hot. And it wasn't because I ran WOT all the time. I think it has to do with that really cool looking 5-blade prop. So I switched over to the 60A for 5 reasons, cooling being the most important. The other reasons are 1. flexibility of using both 3S & 4S batts in my inventory. 2. more weight up front for CG purposes. 3. easy access to the ESC 4. easy access to the AR636A. It wasn't just a straight swap. I enlarged the ESC bay and made the batt tray removeable. There's not enough room in there for a larger ESC without some cutting. I've flown a total of 175 flts on my bird. Of those, 28 have been 4S batt flts. When flying 4S I tend to hotdog it and flt times suffer. I use 2 timers. One is set to countdown anytime the THR is above 10%. The 2nd timer is set to count up anytime the THR CUT switch is OFF. So it also includes glide time with the THR at zero. Here are the avgs on 4S. Total flt time = 9.5mins, Motor run time = 6mins, End voltage = 14.92V, Discharge = 77%. On my 3S flts the avgs are better motor run times and lower capacity discharged. 3S avgs - Total flt time = 9.16mins, Motor run time = 6.69mins, End voltage = 11.29V, Discharged = 65%. But some of it is I'm using a 3300mAh LiPo for 1/3rd of the flts. My ESC swap and ESC bay mod is detailed in my blog here. www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=35683011&postcount=10

Aileron rolls keep the plane moving forward without speed loss while rotating around the cabin. Barrel rolls slow the plane down while maintaining forward momentum. MatPat has a good game theory on starfox or something. Look up do a barrel roll game theory on KZbin and he explains it.
@hifinsword

Aileron rolls are rolls that stay on the longitudinal axis. The plane does not deviate from a straight flight path. Barrel rolls are rolls that do deviate from the longitudinal axis. In other words the plane will change in its flight path off to the sides and in height as it rolls. It's like moving the plane inside a barrel with the bottom of the plane sticking to the sides of a barrel as it rolls. In an aileron roll the plane wing tips would touch the sides of the barrel and the longitudinal axis of the plane would stay in the center of the barrel.

Thanks Hifin Sword and Jason Press! Whenever I have a rudder to aileron tie, which I often times do on war birds, and some other planes, the rolls then require me to put some opposing rudder input to keep rolls tight and clean.

With the wind in this direction, it sucks, when it's down the main "strip" it's pretty awesome :) This site has been SOOOO good to us, and we've been super fortunate to have access to the lot. We realize there's probably better places, but we both live within 2 minutes drive, so it's a perfect location for us!
