If you are starting out, never under estimate the importance of good weather. You can have the most stable plane in the world but it will still be a handfull if your trying to fly outside of your skill level or even worse, the flight envelope of the aircraft itself due to poor weather. Its not just the wind but low light levels, strong directional light sources or even low cloud and mist can cause sudden and possibly catastrophic problems with orientation. Remember that conditions at 100 feet can be completely different to what it feels like on the ground. Watch the weather forecast, look for the calmest period of the day (often early morning or late evening) and be prepared to take advantage of decent breaks in the weather. Getting everything in your favour especially the weather will help your early flying considerably. When i first started off i had a rule that even if the forecast was good i would still not fly if i could see any sign of anything more than the very lightest breeze. This was pre gyro stabilisation days and i was going it alone and teaching myself. Every crash i have ever had since has always been because i was flying in conditions outside of my skill level. Learn the basics in perfect weather first.

Ahh the Mini Apprentice S. I have wrecked that thing more than any other plane than I have, and it still flys better than most of them as well. I have put it into a power line, went nose first into the ground, stalled out while out of safe mode during a take off and flipped it on it’s back. Come to think of it, half of my wing is packing tape. If you want a beginner plane that can take a beating and is easily repairable, get the Mini Apprentice S.

There is so much to learn about this great hobby of ours. My best advice for beginners is to find a dedicated modeler (like me) to help you. The SAFE technology is great. But, it can end up being a crutch for new pilots. And, once you turn it off, you can find yourself in a spot of trouble. I've seen it happen, with rather unpleasant (and expensive) results. An instructor with a compatible buddy box is your best chance of success. I kid you not. P.S. Bigger really does fly better!

I have never flown rc planes before and this plane is great in begginer mode it made it so easy to fly and not crash. I have flown it a couple of dozen times and now flying in advance mode with out any crashes.

Surprised you didn’t mention the family of Timbers. I think for just s few dollars more I’d say the UMX Timber over the Little cub, I have both and think the Timber would be a better buy, and build the confidence better. You don’t have to worry about the wind as much. Thanks

I recommend the umx timber hands down you'll never outgrow it with a 6ch remote and some hobbyking 450mah batterys pushing +15min flights, it has safe and flaps, full lights and good power to grow with and once you learn to fly a micro in wind with out safe you can fly anything anywhere in any conditions!

I had a problem in that the tail wheel was attached to a rather weak area of the rudder bottom. Had I noticed it three flights earlier it would have saved a crackup. Unfortunately by that 3 rd fight I no longer had rudder when trying to correct at a low level wind gust. ONe might say that without a little reinforcement on that rudder control horn we might call it the Achilles heal of an otherwise great plane. To this day as a new Pilot I'm still trying to get my nerve up to fly in 10 plus MPH wind. LOL

UMX, has 1 thing over traditional size trainers. Mass to weight ratio. Whatever it hits you have lowest chance of damage to what it hits and or far less damage to your plane. Absolutely love the UMX, Radian, then Cub then Timber.

Coming from flying helis, what you mentioned about the first plane and its small size as a detriment is the grand paradox of learning how to fly (helis). All of the reasonable (once you get above Blade's 120S or 150...) sized helis that aren't at the mercy of the smallest breezes are fairly heavy, expensive, and dangerous. In a crash, these helis are susceptible to bent main-shafts, broken tail booms, stripped gears, etc. For those reasons, many *_recommend_* using the smaller helis that have practically no mass to resist wind and are so small that you can easily lose sight (or orientation) of them at larger fields. I almost wish I had started on a larger heli that could have resisted the wind a little better. I think that the biggest piece of advice I can give would be to find a mentor or a teacher. After that, go slow. Take it one step at a time. Always remember that you can program the transmitter to be more forgiving (ie less responsive). Use a sim *use a sim* *_use a sim_* *_USE A SIM!!!_*

But the main reason i would is because if you end up persueing the hobby and want to do more stuff you don't have to go and spend 200 to 500 bucks again you can just use the cub because it is just a good plane in general

My dad bought me a rtr champ for my 12 birthday, but few days after I crashed it and broke the wing. It was a little windy and I felt really bad. Then I found out tape is good and he was getting another wing. Was the champ a good choice for me? It was the champ rtr and it still flys with the tape on. It did teach me to fly tho, it's just a little windy.

Regarding the Carbon Cub....Not only are the directions wrong with regard to those screws, they are also wrong on the installation of the GPS. The cub manual says there is a “pocket” with a “lid” and there is not. There is a place you can sit the GPS module on top of the receiver, but nothing to secure it in place, so I guess you have to tape it. In order to find the GPS plug in the receiver you have to wrench the receiver out of the plane cause its mounted with double sided tape, not velcro or a strap. Forget trying to reach technical support. They claim on the website to have a phone support but... no number to call anywhere. If you try to chat, you’ll never get through, but you will get told to try again later after waiting for 15 minutes. If you want to email support you cannot because they don’t have an email address. They do have a form but it is limited in characters to very few so there is not enough space to explain what your problem is. There is no manual either at Horizon or Spektrum for either the GPS module or the receiver. I did buy this model, GPS and a transmitter but I’ll never buy from them again. With ZERO customer support, incorrect manuals and no online support, no KZbin videos this company has no respect for customers. Just the worst post sale support and documentation I’ve every experienced. It’s truly a fraud to accept people’s money and then provide inaccurate documentation, no documentation and no access to support.

Flyzone DHC-2? Or FMS kingfisher. Those are what I'm looking at for my first planes. I know they both have flaps, and either of them probably don't have SAFE. Maybe the kingfisher does. But in the initial stages, I'm likely not even going to touch the flaps. Correcting the plane for level doesn't seem like a problem, unless I won't be able to tell the orientation. I have had RCs before, but never a plane.

There is a huge gap in the HH lineup for BNF park flyers that's easy to transport and fun to fly. Already have the UMX TT and it's awesome.. The 1.5 TT is just too big to transport in most midsize family vehicles without undoing the wings.

I have flown it 4 times today, as the weather was just great..I am going to throw a larger Mah battery so I can have a bit more flight time as about 6mins is not quite enough..But apart from that I am glad I got it, as I havent flown a 4 channel plane before, I can learn on this with the SAFE TECH on board and as I progress flying I can do rolls and other things..But for a beginner I highly recommened this plane..And she looks good in the air to..

Great products but to fully enjoy flying your first plane, one should first build a balsa kit! Just my humble opinion.......

NEGATIVE, hell no...that would cause the whole opposite. He is on the money on which three planes to recommend, do need some simulator time and if possible a instructor w a buddy box.

Carbon Cub s pretty weak. Every time you hit that virtual fence and it takes over to turn around it takes a huge spiraling plummeting dive. You better be a good couple hundred feet off the ground cuz it takes it 50 ft to drop and turn around. If you have any large trees are obstacles watch out. Not only that but sometimes it just keeps on dropping and plummeting and never recovers. I don't know if it's safe to control surfaces are too small or if it sat there manufactured on a budget or what so I know it's the thing takes over and either takes a huge drop to turn around or crashes. So now it's on me 2 pay the postage and ship the thing back to you guys and then pay for the return Postage and who knows what else. I bought at least two dozen Horizon planes and helicopters. I'm sure you guys know where the weak points are. I can pull a new carbon Cub out of the box and tell you exactly where the things going to break if you land a little bit too hard. As a matter of fact first hardloop I did the tail busted and it obviously crashed after that. I think a beginner friendly playing should definitely at least have enough strength so that the thing doesn't break apart in mid-flight

This is a good video, but you don't have to go electric. I started with a gas a bought from a local shop of mine called samonoes, and i loved that plane Honestly you should start with a plane like this, but as soon as you can go to gas. They are just so much better to fly, like if you run out of power, that's it i go home. with a gas plane just fill it back up. with fuel. Guy's pls get gas if you have the space. And if you are unsure, just buddy box.

there are many others out there from other companies that are just as good to learn to fly on that are more budget friendly. I own more than a dozen HH products and they are all very good but over-priced.

Halfway through you said if you were asked which is the best one to start with you said you would have to say the apprentice then at the end you said that you'd recommend to start with the carbon cub s because of the safe tech??? In a video a just watched for horizon you say that it's the apprentice again because you've now put the tech from the carbon into it??? Let's just be totally honest the one you keep recommending is the one you charge the most for and it has nothing to do with the best one for someone getting into the hobby, basically you are just trying to take advantage of beginners to put as much profit in your pocket as possible and inevitably discourage the begginer

Nice planes but there are many other trainers at much less money out there. You will crash and destroy your for plane so start with something from Hobby King or Volantex for example. Horizon Hobbies planes are way overpriced.

Please don't take this the wrong way...Horizon airplanes and Spectrum radios both are great stuff, but my god you have to take out a 2nd mortgage out on your house to afford it.
