Horizon Zero Dawn Was Extremely Soulless and Boring!

I thought since that new Horizon game was coming out soon, this was the perfect time to discuss my feelings about the first game. I am genuinely interested in what you guys think though, if there are any fans of the series here, please let me hear about why you think the game is great!

I completely agree when you say that 2017 was incredible for gaming. We got so many insanity great games that year. Mario Odyssey, BOTW, Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Danganronpa V3, Resident Evil 7, Splatoon 2 and ao many more. After that I just haven't seen anything too interesting that caught my eye. Instead of OMORI that is but that was kinda recent. I've never even wanted to play this game because it just looked soulless. Same ultra realistic graphics that every triple A company shits out and just nothing creative or unique about it. I feel like open world games shouldn't focus so damn much on a story. There is a whole giant world out there for you to explore yet you're just stuck in a cutscene reading or listening to extremely drawn out dialogue. The enormous amount of dialogue made me stop playing Genshin for example. I just didn't care for the okay-ish story, I wanted to have fun in the world since well... It's an open world game, not a visual novel. Games should really tell stories in different ways, kinda what Half-Life and Portal games did. That way you're not watching a movie, you're always in control. I love story driven games that make me feel things and actually make me connect with the characters, but I just can't stay in one spot for 10 minutes listening to some idiots talk while standing still. Like at least add some good animations. And that's why I mostly stick to indie projects. They are actually creative. Anyway rant is over. I'll go play 2D Dark Sou- I mean Hollow Knight.

You're not crazy man. Right after the cutscene of Rost training Aloy, I just dropped it, I can't stand their dialogues and cringe voice acting, and I haven't been in it for an hour yet. After that, I searched around the internet if I'm the only one who thinks the game is garbage, then i found your video. Glad to know I'm not alone, this game suck ass.

I have played this game on and off since 2017 and I’m about 6 hours in and I’ve only just realised in 2022 that you scan the enemies 🤦🏻‍♂️ shows you how much attention I have had playing it 😂.

I agree dude. I am trying to play it now but I cannot put my finger on what it is that keeps pulling me out. I feel like I have to amp myself up to play it and then a few minutes in I give up. It is like it is almost there but key pieces are missing to complete the product. I looks awesome and the combat is almost fun. but I find myself just jump aiming the whole time. dodge roll, slowmo jump, shoot repeat. I like how the characters sometimes gives you descriptions of where to go which allows me to turn off those damn objective markers - but it is inconsistent so I have to leave it on anyway. The story and politics to me is cool. but the delivery kinda spoils it. and also the background music ramps up but then dies out again for seemingly no reason. if I can sum it up it feels really hit and miss but when it misses it spoils the hits so bad

Whatever point you were trying to make fell through when you said you couldn't climb a Tallneck. Aloy absolutely can climb/conquer a Tallneck - it's just requires the player to use the surrounding area to find a high enough platform to have Aloy jump from in order to reach one of the bars along the Tallneck's neck, seeing as the legs are impossible to climb. Not the game's fault you hate problem solving.

I wanted to play this game since I saw it at e3 2015, I didn't have a PS4, so I waited years for PC port, when I finally played it and it turned out so boring, it was such a sad moment for me 😭

Good point on the forced cutscenes. I was interested in trying this game but knowing I'm forced to watch long cutscenes, NOPE. As I always say, don't make a story driven game of you don't have an artist actually writing a good story. And even if you do, don't forget it's a game not a fucking movie. One of the reasons I love FromSoftware games. I have never gotten closer to being able to entirely ignore the game's plot than these, although other games do it great too like the Monster Hunter series (except for World) or BOTW (which had a really terrible story and cutscenes, imo, but since it's entirely skippable it's not a problem at all! I don't consider it a flaw!).

Your opinion makes sense. I feel that Sony wants all games to follow the movie-game formula like a netflix tv show. Perhaps because sony has a film branch unlike nintendo and microsoft.

Im so glad you made this! I was so bored with this game. I swear, Tetris had a better story and emotions. I bought this when it came out but to this day I still haven't finished it. And I've tried like 5 times. The game play is OK but the characters are so boring! It could have been so much better if they kept the robots animal vibe but upped the story and characters.

It's awesome, kept me kooked up. It is really fun, played it 100s of hours. The world is interesting if u think abt it, fights r fun, story is cool, gameplay is fun, cutscenes r kinda weird, Parkour ofcourse isn't the best. I still play it on and off, just for the cool action feeling. DLC was also great. Idk what u r talking abt, probably can't argue with subjectivity.

I sold my ps4 a couple of years ago for the same reason you bring up hear which is Sony's insistence of cinematic presence in these games to such a degree that it just kills gameplay. Miss Driveclub loads though

I highly disagree, I love horizon, it’s my favorite series, I have over 1000 hours in the sequel, this isn’t going to be me gushing about it but more trying to have a discussion and explain the things that gripes you. Yes the moCap is really bad in zero dawn, got better in the dlc and is stellar in forbidden west. I don’t know either why people compare it to zelda (probably recency bias) other than having a open world, ancient technology and light puzzles. The thing with horizon is it’s story and intricate world building over how everything works, not to mention amazing visuals and unique battle concept. Which is all novelty things and I would lie if i said that combat can get a bit boring after a while, especially if you try to just mindlessly bash through it which, judging by the footage, you do. I mean no disrespect in this of course, I too do that with someone games it’s only natural, but horizon is filled with different options in tactics and combat as you must adjust to the situation. Why Varl and Sonia are so robotic is because it’s a strained relationship as Sonia is both war chief and his mother, making it difficult to balance in their relationship. Yes Aloy seam bland in the beginning, which is understandable because she grew up outcast, has a lot of agency and struggles with self identity, this get further build upon throughout the game and is a main point in the sequel making her a very multidimensional and grounded character. The big dinosaur you wanted to climb, I guess you mean a Tallneck, which you are supposed to climb, you just must find a way to reach it’s neck antennas by scaling objects. Why you can’t climb the metal ring walls is because it’s a quest arena, they don’t want you to accidentally leave it, got better in the sequel as most of the arenas are easily circumvented for long range sniping if you want to, most also allows stealth and other tactics. Now why it’s set in the future and everything is primitive is a extremely important story element that is the main thing in this game so I won’t spoil it unless you ask. I really think you should give it another try, take your time, explore and observe the details so that you later can play the sequel as it’s criminally over looked, has so much better gameplay, combat and options. Now since you talked about Zelda I will too, I watched botw and 100% played totk. Honestly it was really boring, it has some good highs with puzzles and light dragon. But the story was bland, quest forgettable, combat extremely unpolished, the world vacant and the controls absolutely abysmal. It’s physics was impressive and so the construct building, but the game doesn’t allow us to use it for combat and doesn’t really have a natural progression in upgrades besides absolute obscene grinding, the flow is just really weird. Kratos' wife just died and her last wish was that she wanted her ashes to be thrown off from the highest peak. Atreus wasnt ready for that journey but leaving him alone wasn't safe either so they started the journey towards the highest peak together. The whole game is based on that journey. Isn't that a plot? I dont think anything we did in that game was just a meaningless fetch quest. We just try to get closer to the highest peak step by step. Every quest included interesting lores about the new realm. It's the best game I've ever played. You may not like it but saying it doesn't even have a plot does not make sense

@@adi_cs03 @Aditya Sharma it's a shitty excuse of a plot imo, they wanted them to go to the top of the mountain, but the game devs decided to force 10 different cockblocks on the way to the top fight baldur. go to mountain. mountain has black mist, get the light of alfheim. fight dragon. wrong mountain, get chisel from giant corpse to go to correct mountain. atreus sick, get blades and go to hel to help him. use the portal to the mountain. portal to mountain broken. get out of hel and find a new way there. mimir can take you there. he's missing an eye. go into snake belly to get the eye. fight baldur again. finally go to mointain. game ends. all these things feel so forced and unnatural, the devs tried too hard to make a story out of a shallow premise.

Thank god I got all achievements for this game. This game felt like chore, couldn’t stop playing the game because I’m a 100% game achiever and I had to finish what I started haha, uninstalled when I got the last 3 achievements. (Finish new game+, finish new game+ on ultra hard, get all other achievements) just skipped all cutscenes and dialogue finished game in less than 10 hours. 😂

i agree! kinda lured into buying the game from the positive reviews but man... it's boring af - NPCs speaking as slow as sloths, and long winded cutscenes were cool at the start. AND the multiple FETCH quests with no compelling reasons to do those! And not to mention the annoying save system. Coming from AC Odyssey, this game pales in comparison by A LOT.

I am playing it right now and it's an okay games IMO. Can't knock the soundtrack, just as they delivered in the Killzone series (pre Shadow Fall). Funny enough, I couldn't stand BOTW, because of the weapons constantly breaking and quit at the halfway mark. Never thought it would bother me this much.

The characters are so boring and forgettable that when I played forbidden west I was like she was friends with this person I don't remember them at all. The story is so bland and so is the story. Only the gameplay and the beautiful open world was what I really enjoyed. The side quests are just so boring as well. This isn't even the end of the story either that another horizon will be coming out in the future.

I felt the same way playing this game, I played almost until the end of the game but I couldn't finish it, the characters are shit, icons with no charisma at all. You only use a bow throughout the game, the game is repetitive and boring, the only thing that is good in the game are the graphics, AND IT'S NOT EVEN TECHNICALLY GOOD, the physics is bad, the artificial intelligence of the NPCs are horrible. An intro is usually setting the tone and atmospherwe about what is to come. Game, movie or book. The Intro of HZD does not drive the game at all. It's like two different stories. My hopes were hanging on the intro only to be pushed into a stupid archer game in a future that has nothing but tents and silly robotic dinos. It is like selling a wedding ring that's made of plastic with gold paint around it which you can scrape off just by looking at it. When Aloy enters the cave to discover artifacts of a high-tech civilization, THAT was that wow-effect I was looking for in the entire game. Instead, I am hunting robots (ROBOTS!) with a bow. WTF!

Theres nothing wrong with story in a game. Many of my favorite games are story centric. Fallout New Vegas, Cyberpunk, Skyrim, and the Witcher series are all pretty much story based RPGs. My problem is when you develop a story and your games are centered around it, and then if I don't care about a single character due to poor dialogue, voice acting, and piss poor animation to express that actors/characters emotions. What I mainly value in a game is if it will last me until the day I die, can I go back to this game after the 10th time of beating it and it still feel freash? I rarely find myself wanting to go back to those story based games because I've already experienced their storie. I don't want to essentially re-watch a movie that's 20-60 hours long; probably for another 10 years. Doesn't mean I think Witcher is bad, its just I've already experienced it and enjoyed the characters why do I wanna re-watch that? Sony games very rarely blend the gameplay well with the story, so I'm dependent on enjoying the story, if I don't like your story, in your story based game I'm not going to care. So yes, Sony games are essentially movies.

I could never fathom the hype of this game. Its got pretty graphics but thats all, its very bland and boring. I played it for about 3hrs and it felt like a chore to play. A game is supposed to win u over within the first 5 mins, I never once felt that with this game. A couple things bugged me about this game, especially bow & arrow up against gigantic metal robots didnt make sense to me. A lot of cult like Sony fans overhype this game. If this was a third party game it would have never gotten the praise it got, but since its a Sony exclusive they overhype these mediocre "ok" games. These modern Sony exclusives and other games nowadays feel like your playing to get to the next cutscene instead of playing the game for the fun mechanics and intricacies of a game. Modern games suck really bad compared to the games of the 6th gen to be honest. The PS2, OG Xbox & Gamecube era was such a blast, almost every game felt unique and was so much fun to play. Back then u could replay games over and over and thoroughly enjoy them. Nowadays every game feels like the other, there is no creativity, nothing innovative or fresh, just heavy cinematics and movie like elements & cutscenes every 5 seconds... smh

I gave the game 9 hours of my time, which was super generous, considering how bored I was in the first hour. Free time is something I rarely get these days. If a game can't hook me in at LEAST the first 2 hours, you've failed.
