Marvelous craftsmanship. I put grill wheels on one end of mine so that I am able to roll it around, if necessary. Or, easily load it into a trailer to move. As Joe said, these puppies are HEAVY.

Long hives have been around longer than langstroth hives. Aton Janscha , Viennese beekeeper master was the inventor in 1771. In 1852, Langstroth received a patent on the first movable frame beehive in America. There is a great facebook page showing many different plans and tweeks for the HH there. It is called Long langstroth hives. Many beeks there keep bees in very cold regions.

This style is preferred but most American keepers are taught to use the stack style which is very invasive to the Bees even if they don't seem to mind. These can be split as well right down the middle to accomodate another hive for Overwintering, thus keeping them all together and much warmer, however in that method you might want to mark the entrances to prevent accidental entry from the other Bees like say an X over one entrance and then a circle over the other with duct tape. So far this is the style I want to go with for ease of care.

Good job on the hive. I have one almost just like yours. I caught a swarm back in April and they are doing great. The great thing about this hive is the bees can get in and out very quickly without having to go up through so many bees to get to the honey storage of the traditional hives. Love mine and am going to replace as many of my stack up hives as I can.

Going with three hives next year instead of two. I was going to do a top bar, but you've inspired me to build two of these to compete with one of my old conventional Langstroths. I see this design as taking the best of both. The only thing is, I'd like to modify the roof to be slightly larger, or go straight up somehow, to shield the top boards even when open in case of rain (I often don't have the luxury of being around on clear days). And, also working out a larger board for a top feeder. Thank you! Read more REPLY

I like this design. It is one of my favorites. I made some improvements. I made a video for a design of a “horizontal long beehive design with the option to stack 8-frame supers”. You can do a search with those words between quotations to find the video on youtube. I think horizontal hives are the best.

Beautiful hive, Joe. This is the end of my first year of beekeeping and we've had a lot of ups and downs. My original plan was to have a top bar, but the local beeks convinced me to do a Langstroth first. I've been researching horizontal hives and came across your video today, and I must say, I'm impressed. I'm in NC so won't have the issues with cold that you do, but I'm going to incorporate a lot of your ideas into my first one. Thanks for a great video, and I hope you post your progress with this one.

Wonderful hive! I do wish you had plans available, but I also understand why you don't. We were planning to build a couple of top bars but this sort might be a better idea... I know if we do attempt to make one it won't look anywhere near as professional as yours but hopefully our new bees will make do with roughing it and forgive us. :) Thanks for the useful video and commentary about the hive.

Great work. I am working on building a langstroth long now. One question I have about the top boards on your yours are, once those top boards get propolised in place, are you going to be able to get under them to break them free? With my standard langstroth, in cooler weather, the propolis gets hard as cement and it takes some serious effort to crack the sections free. Thanks for sharing your designs and ideas.

Joe, I'm curious about the ventilation system. I see you have considered this with the vented holes on the outside of the hive and the other screened holes in the inner boards that are placed over the frames. I have seen some top bar hives with a big screen along the whole bottom of the hive body. Is yours solid or also screened? Ventilation is good, but in the colder months this could be a curse, too much cold air. What is your opinion about that? How much is too much, and how much is too little?
