You've accomplished what I had planned to do ( and will do this winter). I presently have six Langstroth hives and can't wait to make the transition to the horizontal hive system. Thanks so much for sharing your endeavor!!!

Vertical Langstroth hives are suited for commercial migratory Beekeeping. Long hives, top bar or full framed hives are ideal for domestic beekeeping where the hive isn't moved.

Great video and so well explained. I'm looking to build myself one asap to shift one of my Langstroth colonies into before I need to put another box on it. I can then compare them over time and I'm strongly suspecting that I'll be preferring to work the long hive more than the vertical Langstroth.

You could install hinges on the tops of hive and you wouldnt have to lift the tops off when you are checking for honey.

I’m going to have to make one of those horizontal hives. Handy for the hobby bee keeper.

They're dead simple to make. I've made one that holds 32 deep frames. Now I just need to wait for spring when I get some bees.

Looks really cool. Thinking of giving a hive a go maybe this year if I catch a swarm, and switching the traditional five over next year if things go well. Going to figure some sort of quilt box into the equation for our Ohio tundra bees, though :)

Lots of people have them in cold regions. Facebook group named Long Langstroth hives has many Northern users in USA. They can give you a lot of great info.

I intend to convert to horizontal hives this season and try to catch a wild swarm to improve the genetics of my colony and hopefully decrease the need for chemical management.

My friend, you are pointing out that the queen can not get above your wire rack called a QE. Neither can the boys get around from above or below, thereby clogging up the bee spaces from the workers. Think about it, mate. You are demoralizing the workers making them unhappy during a good nectar flow. Pull that QE back about 19 or 20 mm so the drones can get around. Everybody is happy that way. Nectar will fill up the super much better. Bob in the states.

Because 1 is a Commercial and one is not. The commercial is for taking lots of honey. A bit like Friesan Cows make 70 litres of watery milk a day, Jerseys make 25 litres of creamy high quality milk, better for your family. Backyard bee keeping better to use horizontal hive. Better for the bees, better for your family.

HI Rex I was thinking of doing the same as you can use std frames, extract with std equipment easy access etc without breaking your back, I have a top bar beehive atm but will look at going down this path in the future for backyard beekeeping, thanks for sharing Cheers Mark from FAILFORD.

What do you do with a smaller colony that does not fully fill the broot area, how do the bees cope with the empty space between the broot and the queenexcluder? I'm using Langstroth 2/3 (159mm high) Boxes (2 for broot, up to 3 for honey) but are switching to Dadant frames for the broot area.

I love the notion of the horizontal hive! Sure beats lifting all those langstroth boxes. Like the video! One question though,,, why not make the roof one complete piece - is the issue weight?

With a horizontal hive, there should be no need for a queen excluder.
@ashleyallen6479

Can you expand on that and explain why? Very curious.
@rstlr01
@rstlr01 4 жыл бұрын
Aj Allen Because your brood frames will always be next to each other since the hive is horizontal. The queen excluder is just to keep the queen in the bottom of the hive to make it easier to harvest honey. In the horizontal hive it really doesn’t matter where the brood is laid because you have access to all of it without any lifting.
