The Vans mod plates that Vans supplies is longer, and ties into the area beyond that first rib. I believe that’s where the strength is needed. Sure, this part is stronger, being made of stainless, however it’s too short! Any bending moment is being directed into the 2 rivets in the rib flange. Yes I know there are 4 rivets in the rib flange, but the two close to the centerline aren’t carrying the load like the outer ones are. I wouldn’t feel comfortable using this part without the row of rivets extended past the inboard ribs..that’s where the strength needs to be. This doubler will eventually shear those corner rivets. If I were doing a condition inspection where this was installed to repair cracking, I wouldn’t sign off on the plane without replacing this with the Vans SB repair.

Perhaps builders could install the spar mods at the time when the wings are built and avoid the problem entirely.

Van's has been providing the reinforcement plates in the kits since the problem was first found. If you need the plates, they're $8 for the set.

This isn’t for the wings, it’s the horizontal stabilizer spar.
