Awesome! Great video. Clears things up. Working on a differential equation and I wasn’t sure how to set the problem up picture wise. I like using horizontal because of x being the horizontal axis.

Gravity does X amount of negative work while the mass goes up, then X amount of positive work while the mass goes down. Therefore, zero net work done on the spring-block system. Right?

Thank you Matt for your helpful concise explanation video. It would have been even more so if you told us how far back up will the mass traval after being pulled down from the equilibrium point.

would the potential energies of a vertical spring and horizontal spring be the same?

Quite confused, I was thinking it should be mg - kx(o) instead of kx(o) - mg, sincere kx(o) is against gravity. Or it doesn't matter?

and wheres the acceleration? F=ma? surely when the spring is extended it will then oscillate therefore you have to consider its inertia and use F=ma aswell in your equation?

Wait, in the third one, how is the initial kx equal to the new weight force (mg) if it was equal to the force with the lesser mass (mg initial)?

This is confusing as you are not specifying your reference line for h, height above ground, is the spring touching the earth or still hanging , pls consider this point in next lecture
