Testing out the Hornady Critical Duty ammunition in .357 Magnum and .45 ACP in "duty" sized handguns. I ballistic gel test the ammunition with 1/4" MDF as well as doing a steel barrier test where I test the Federal Hydrashok .357 Magnum and .45 ACP ammunition against the Hornady Critical Duty in .357 Magnum and .45 ACP. Always appreciative of any channel help :) www.patreon.co...

If anyone wants my overall honest opinion, here it is; I feel like for a .45 ACP that the Critical Duty is too "hot" as the recoil starts getting up there close to 10mm. But for the .357 Mag, especially in a 4" barrel the recoil is probably 50% less than typical .357 ammo. It felt very efficient and performed well. I would say it's one of the best if not the best general .357 Magnum loads that most people could shoot well.

At 8:40, the "I don't know what that is" statement became clear what it was after cleaning the blocks more extensively. It was perfect disks of pan material that rather than stuck in the hollow cavities like the Hydrashok, were just knocked out of the way by the flex tip material of the Critical Duty ammo.

I like the pan better than an a car door has opening liinkage , window carrier frame and braces and a motor and opening bracket if its power windows and still some junk if its crank. My brother and i tried this. We got 9 different results out of 10 shots each. So thanks for using the pan and have a great day Sam

@@GunSam I don't agree they are = in skill . I can shoot DA nearly as good as SA , it takes a smooth steady pull through . The issue is more at distance , any flaw becomes greater . It can be mastered , like lucky Gunner said , not as big an issue as many make it out to be . To be CLEAR , it takes more skill , but the skill can be learned if you practice some . So it's harder & it's not too hard ??? What ?? DA/SA is the most safe action , LOVE MY SIG ! No Safety .

I love punching holes in metal. Many times I would bring home scrap metal from work on Friday, shoot it up on Saturday and return it to the scrap bin on Monday. Good times! I'm talking mild steel, usually 1/8" thick and less. I salvaged several pieces of AR400, 1/4" and 3/8" that I didn't destroy and didn't return to scrap bin.

Great idea adding the metal barrier. I was surprised at how far both of them penetrated after passing through it. It seems like the pan did defeat the hollow point on both brands but they’d still do significant damage to the intended target.

My two favorite calibers for self defense. Hydra-Shok has been the most consistently accurate factory 45 ACP SD ammo I've ever shot, but I've found the hollow point can clog with fiberfill in insulated garments or fleece and fail to expand, so I don't carry it. You might consider performing the same test as this one with comparable Gold Dot loads...I have found them to do better than I expected after penetrating hard barriers.

Interesting results. When I first started on my department almost 20 years ago we were carrying 230 gran hydra shoks in our issued Glock 21’s. We had an incident where officers had to shoot into a vehicle. The after action concluded the hydra shok fragmented going through the windshield and was ineffective. We switched to 230 HST +p after that. We’ve since retired the the 21’s in favor of the 17 for duty and the 19 for detectives. We still use the 9mm HST 147 grain standard pressure.

The 357 magnum dump a lot of energy almost immediately. The hard barrier test was a great idea. Though I would expect that it would deviate the results with all bullet types and calibers and that it cannot a precision shot. I would tend to believe that officers are hoping to end the threat quickly and they would most likely need to put more rounds down range to do so in a barrier situation. I love the 357. I know that it's not the most powerful round but it's terminal ballistics are outstanding for personal protection and where I live for animal predation protection as we only have black bears and mountain lions. Great video. Always a good morning to begin the day with a range demonstration by a respected professional.

Federal must be harding up the lead in them lol. Great video sir!

I am glad to know that old school hydra shock was pretty good for 357 mag. I had 1 back in the day. I also had a 38 special hydra shock. Older style. I did question the 38 snubby. At times I put 38 rounds in me 357 staggered security and soft shot. My uncle reloaded my 357 mags for me. They had plenty of power. I always stuck to the slandered store bought rounds. Unless I was target shooting.😅

The one thing I'll give the 45 through the barrier vs the 357 is that there's not enough energy difference to sway my mind one way or another. That being said, when going through the barrier both calibers penetrated plenty, but without expansion I'm drawn to the 45 simply for the fact that even with expansion, it's still almost a half inch wide. The bigger hole all else failing, is going to bleed better. At least that's what I've experienced and is my running theory. I'm not trying to convince anyone per se, but I do enjoy taking part in this very fine discussion!!! I figure that's why those big slow 45 colt semi-wadcutter slugs are such good killers, even though they don't expand!!! Elmer Kieth knew it way back when!!! Although when you speed up dramatic and load 357 mag where it's supposed to be with this bullet weight(1500fps) then it's no comparison, because the energy different is massive!!! Between these 2 I'd go with the 45 acp. If I'm gonna pack 357mah, then I'm grabbing some Underwood or Buffalo Bore, or DoubleTap, or even Black Hills 357 mag. I love the Underwood 357 mag 158gr xtp. In a 6 inch Ruger GP100 it's rated at 1500fps!!! I used to have the 8 3/8ths inch Taurus 608 357 mag, and it would send that Underwood xtp at damn near 1600fps!!! Thats over 800ftlbs of energy out of a 357!!! That's enough of an energy difference to negate the heavier bullet and bigger diameter. That's the operating principle I'm using, and it has served me very well, on game many times!!!

That was a cool test. I'm always happy when you do a 45 acp test. I have a 10mm and enjoy it but my 45's see more range. Did the 220's feel hotter than 230's? I know it's hard to tell if you not shooting them side by side. I was curious if you have ever considered doing a video where you compare factory against reloads that can be found in any book. I don't want to start the "don't shoot reloads for self defense" but sometimes that's what's in your gun like when your headed home from a range day doing drills with reloads to save money. Anyways great video thanks for all you do and you make learning fun

Is there an instance where the 9mm fmj has an advantage over the hollow point. As if you were needing to shoot thru a door to hit the target. Also would fmj be better if you had to shoot a large animal?
@GunSam
@GunSam 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, to some degree. But for a large animal you would be best if the FMJ was flat point like Winchester Service grade FMJ. Round nose will tumble at some point in the target. As far as FMJ VS HP vs metal, yes and no. If it's a cheap HP than yes an FMJ will do better, but a good bonded HP and an FMJ will do about the same.

Good evaluation/test! I do think that manufacturers emphasize penetration to the point of over penetration, because of the FBI testing and subsequent recommendations! For me, any penetration past 13 inches is too much, especially if the shot is to the front or back of the torso. And like you mentioned, recoil has a major factor is shooting, i.e. flinching. So I will continue to load my mags with Federal HST 230gr JHP and 230gr FMJ.

Both the Critical Duty and the Hydrashok did very well,gotta say that CD is some hot .45. Unfortunately CD does not work at all in my [and other peoples] FNX45 as the rubber tip hangs on the feed ramp. Never had a single malfunction with any other ammo.

I love 45 all-around. Not flimsy like 9 mm and with one or possibly 2 rounds bad guys will be neutralized unlike 9mm where I see cops dumping mags into people and they still live or move at least for a while...

What's the purpose of having hollow point bullets if they don't expand? Overall none of this particular ammo impressed me.

In a way it reminds me of my test with 10mm Silver Tips on THICK STRONG sheet steel . I thought it would splatter , a FMJ 45 arrp just bounced off 1 sheet , a 125 gr, 357 JHP >> 1/2 of them stayed on the surface & part of the core went in , the other 1/2 did go in ( 1 sheet ) . The Silver tip Blew large holes into 2 sheets , looked like a 44 mag . , I think the H P was crimped shut & acted like a FMJ .

I have both and work. GS you are messing with me. Yup 2 days late apologies 🥴 the yellow tin plate should now say the response call will never come. Defend yourself and family. I do like both rounds, but this time? Where to find at any $$. Thanks GUN SAM

I had someone shoot at me in the woods, and when I called the cops to report attempted murder or whatever it was, they said that it's the woods, that's for DNR (department of natural resources). Like, okay....2 days pass and the DNR call and ask what happened. Police never came.

I'm going to say Lehigh Defense style bullets would perform much better through a hard barrier, with more consistent depth and wounding.

Generally my dominant eye is open and non dominant is slightly squinted. Unless it's fast defensive training less than 7 yards, then I will have both wide open.

That pan is way heavier duty of a metal than a modern car door. Modern car doors are made out of paper thin metal.
