I have used Hornady SST s in my flintlock muzzleloaders with 90 gr of FF or 100 gr of pyrodex in my inlines. The twist on my flintlock is 1:48, inline is 1:32. Always group well and have taken many deer with them. I also use 12 ga 300 gr SST for deer in the Midwest. Perform great and shoot about 3 in group at 100 yds. Great video and very informative.

I hunt in Arizona and Tennessee so I want to shoot something consistent so i recently changed to the Hornandy SST with 300 grains. Most of my shots in Tn are less than 50 yards with my Knight 50 cal. After suffering through two earlier seasons with the PowerBelt 245 grain Aerotips, I got tired of them not making a complete pass through (or even bouncing off on one occasion) on any whitetail deer it hit. So, I switched to the Hornandy SST 300 grains last year before Tennessee opening Muzzle season. Added three pellets instead of two. Got gun sighted in at 100 yards. By the end of the first week, I had taken my buck limit. The first one was at 40 yards, dropped him right there, good pass through and plenty of blood, not that a trail was needed. The second buck was behind my stand at 20 yards. Bam, he ran 20 yards and dropped like a lump of dead meat. Again, plenty of blood due to a complete pass through, but minimal meat loss. No question as to my new go to!! If i ever get drawn for elk in AZ, I wouldn't hesitate to take the Knight for up to 200 yards with the three pellets and these 300 grain Hornandy.

I've been using regular Hornady xtp 300 gr pistol rounds with harvester crushed rib sabots. I'm getting under a inch group at 100 yd with my cva wolf and they will drop big 200 pound boar where he stands. Haven't tried on whitetail yet but the ones I've recovered look like a rivet head on ironwork. And they're way cheaper than any of the actual muzzle loader bullets. I just paid 26$ for 50. The 200 grain are only 38 for a box of 100 which are what I use at the range for plinking and getting my scope zeroed. I just bump my powder down to 90 for the 200 grain. The best part of ML is experimenting with different stuff and getting your favorite combination.

I bought two boxes of the Hornaday 250 gr. SST Muzzleloader bullets recently. I own a CVA Hunterbolt Magnum rifle I bought in a pawn shop a few months ago for $109.00 and I honestly don't think it had ever been fired. Also got a .45 caliber barreled receiver, ram rod, breech plug and ail with the .45 barrel. It had and still does the .50 cal. barrel on it. I own a farm and have lots of room to shoot so I set up some gallon jugs yesterday at right at 300 yards just to see if I could get into the same zip code with this Open Sighted rifle. The only time I'd ever shot it I was limited to 75 yards so that's where I zeroed it in with some Power Belt bullets I had. I was shocked to find that with three Triple 7 FireStar pellets I could aim at the top of the jugs and hit them at the bottom. I'm guessing maybe ten inches of drop and extremely accurate. It would just put one bullet after another in the same place. It is a Magnum Rated rifle so I tried using a fourth pellet twice for a 150 grain equivalent load. Recoil is an understatement but with that load it was shooting about ten inches high at 300 yards. Out of fifteen shots I busted two of the jugs and every shot I fired would have killed a deer with a dead center aim. It has extremely good open sights being fiber optic but still, 300 yards with open sights and hitting? That FireStar powder burns very clean, very little smoke and I did run a cleaning patch down the barrel followed by a dry one twice during shooting but I found this Bullet to be very easy to load even with several shots threw the gun. I'd also like to try the Flex Tip 250gr. bullet in it as they are a solid copper bullet and much tougher and claim good expansion and accuracy. Also about eight bucks per 20 bullets higher priced. Yesterday sure gave me a new found confidence in my $100 rifle anyway.

Love the video. My brother started shooting the federal all copper bore lock bullets last year. He really likes them and they load easy everytime In his CVA optima pro. They have a driving band than engages the rifling only when they are fired.

I used the Hornady SST for a couple of years in my CVA Optima. The 250 Gr SST is the EXACT same bullet that Hornady uses in their 450 Bushmaster load (verified by a Hornady technician). However, in both my Optima (with 82 grains by weight of Blackhorn 209 @ 2100 fps) and the 450 Bushmaster at 2200 fps, with the 250 gr SST I had a few bullets that resulted in kills, but tough tracking because they did not pass through and left no blood trail. On examination of the bullets, I had jacket / core separation. I switched to the Barnes all copper 250 gr Spit-fire T-EZ for my Optima Muzzleloader and the all copper 275 gr Barnes TSX for the 450 Bushmaster. Now I get great expansion AND better penetration with complete pass-throughs and good blood trails. NOTE: The SST was effective in terms of killing - no deer or hog (with the 450 Bushmaster) ran more than 40 yards. However, I'd rather have a good blood trail just in case I need to track an animal more than a few yards.

Also. As far as I can tell, the Hornady xtp are almost identical to the sst bullet just without the red plastic tip. I can't see any accuracy drop at 100 yds and definitely doesn't stop them from expanding properly. I haven't tried them past 100 tho so I'm sure its only to help with ballistics at longer ranges, which isn't an issue here in SE and East Texas. Your rarely gonna get at shot past 100. If I was in Oklahoma or Wyoming or somewhere that's wide open, I would probably opt for the sst instead.

They shoot great in the Optima as I was sure they would but due to the Artic moving into Kansas It's been too cold to enjoy shooting for a while now. I also bought several boxes of the Berry's 250 grain ''Blue Diamond'' bullets that seem to shoot every bit as accurately as the SSTs. I'd like to see you do a video on the Berry's bullets too. I have used both pyrodex and 777 pellets in the past. They are more convenient in terms of loading, and ease of handling, but I noticed a "burn ring" about four inches or so inside my barrel when I used these propellants. So, after doing some serious scrubbing I actually had to make some patches out of fine steel wool. I soaked them in solvent and worked them through the bore. I finally got the bore bright and shiny again, that's when I switched to Black Horn 209 and I never looked back at the other powders again since using it because it cleans up so easily. I also like the fact that I can load in finer increments such as 120, 130, or 140 grains instead of being limited to 100 or 150 grains as is the case with pellets.

So, 110 grains by volume = 77 grains by weight. Montana states that more than 120 volumetric grains (84 grains by weight) does not give any higher velocities since more than that won't burn completely. The 240 gr Hornady XTP MAG bullet (Stock # 45220) is .452 diameter and can be used with the Black sabots. The 240 gr XTP bullet (for the 44 Magnum pistol) is .429 and can be used in a 50 Cal Muzzleloader with the Harvester GREEN sabots, which are THICKER since the .429 diameter bullet is undersized compared to the .452 diameter of the SST muzzleloader bullets.

@@savagehunter3739 Thanks for the information. I still have several XTP's , so I will definately try some different sabots. The ones I have currently have a yellow sabot, which is most likely the cause of my accuracy problems. I appreciate the insight, and you sharing your knowledge. That's why these videos are so important. It gives us hunters a chance to share our experiences, and could really help someone struggling with their equipment.

The shockwaves and sst are the same thing!

No they are not. After extensive testing, and analyzing them, Hornady SST bullets expand much better than the new Shockwave bullets do. Perhaps I need to make a side-by-side comparison video to prove my point.
