Whats the purpose of the gateway??

These locks come with Bluetooth connectivity out of box, but if one wants Wi-Fi connectivity as well, a gateway/hub will be required. The lock is paired with the hub via Bluetooth and the hub is connected to the Wi-Fi.

Does this door lock need to connect to Wi-Fi to function or no need because there are batteries and Bluetooth? Thank you.
