Your paint splatter story reminded me of the time my dad was shaking a tomato ketchup bottle in the communial dining room at Minehead Butlins. The top came off, and he covered half a dozen of his fellow diners in Heinz red sauce.

An interesting project. Just a thought, you could have used a micro connection cable between the loco and the wagon and then you would save the integrity of the wagon and even make it multi functional, so that if you had any other small shunting locomotives then just attach the wagon and away you go! Lawrence

Guy in our club earned the name "Papa Smurf" when he forgot to secure the lid to a gallon can of sky blue. He shook the can over his shoulder and turned the carpet sky blue. Fortunately we got the paint up, but he never lived it down.

I try to avoid water based paints. Somehow they do not seem as tough. A good enamel matt for me and clean with white spirit. Maybe I'm shewing my age!

Great result and good workshop. I am already looking for some time for a new Smokey Joe to tenderize, so as soon as I will find one, I can follow your instructions. Thanks for that! By the way, would the connection between tender and loco also work without the "D" of the D-coupler on the loco? It would look nicer without it, but the connection might be less stable?

Yes you could remove the D coupler from the loco. But it's moulded into the underframe on these models so once it's gone it's gone.

@@oobill That's true. I usually replace these moulded couplers by smaller ones with a screw (which improves the looks of rolling stock, I think), so I could always add such one later.

So the tender wires are just hard soldered to the wheel pickups and the motor? I've been working on tenderising an engine myself and been trying to find electrical connectors to let the tender attach and detach.

There are little male/female connectors but they are a bit of a fiddle I think. As a wee 0-4-0 and tender are pretty short and easily handled off track I think hard wiring is easier. I don't see me running the loco without the tender.

What is the advantage of having pick ups in tender?

The loco is quite small and the advantage is that the tender will also provide power to the loco when going over points, etc

Just a quick question. Lima class 47 squeals around corners I know one of the small double cogs is notched and needs replacing have you come across this noise regards Sam Woodward

I haven't come across that on a Lima specifically when cornering but it's likely to be the gears. Going around corners the wheels get forced to one side a bit which does have an impact on the gears. If the spindles are a little worn and gears a bit loose then it might cause squealing. I'd also make sure the clip is filed smooth and bearings either side of the armature are lubricated.
