Bit late in the day now, but I think you placed those plastic spacers between the chassis halves upside down. If I am correct, the spacers should be flush with the bottom of the chassis when in place. I only mention this as I have just serviced my own exact same model, and thought I would see what you did to yours.

Nice little loco - the lining makes it look good. Re oiling linkages - I have had to replace wheel sets and retaining pins on two of my Bachmann steam locos. The pins were friction fit and the oil ruined the friction part of the setup and the pins kept coming out. Tried cleaning out the oil and applying Loctite or Supaglue to no avail. Have been very wary with oil near friction fit setups ever since.

Hi Bill. What a pretty little loco! Much more attractive than my J39. Watching you work on yours reminded me of what you did - including the motor transplant - for my J15. Looks like Bobby's got a love/hate relationship with the new barmaid... Looking forward to you "Lube / workshop essentials" video.

Notably, the Dapol Bubble Cars (Classes 121/122) suffer from a similar issue (starting slow, but gaining in speed as they warm up). I hope, this will address this issue, as well.

Very rewarding tuneup. That beautiful locomotive really responded and is so much happier. Please tell us the year the trains you work on were produced. I'm very curious about the vintage of these fascinating models.

Very nice, such a sweet little loco. I agree, looks like one of Hornby's best models. Cheers

Its refreshing to see a Hornby model that has been designed with ease of servicing in mind, and on such a small loco, whereas some of the larger locos are a right pain to try and access.

The 2023 catalogue said it was due in Q3 back then. As per the screenshot in this video the Hornby website says it's "Expected Spring 2025". We shall see...

I’m in the same boat with Hornby’s M7, paid for 2023 but still no where in sight. One of the biggest issues I have with this, you purchase a model in 2023, but it gets released years later, you end up with a model which is potentially 2-3 years out of date with other releases from the same year. The M7 is, as far as I can tell, the same tooling as their earlier M7, and was originally intended to be released in Fall 2023, but if it’s released in 2025 will it still be to the standard of a model I would buy new this year? I don’t know what Hornby is thinking with their pre-order strategy these days.

I am surprised that you have had problems with this this locomotive already. You have only had it a short while and you can’t put many miles on it. I wonder whether Hornby are beginning to let their customers down a bit with the quality of the mechanisms. It does seem a shame because the model is beautiful.

I hope you're not going to tell us you don't favour Moli grease anymore. I've just ordered some for the first time. Anyway, thanks for yet another educational video. I reckon about 90% of my model train servicing skillset is learned from you.

I still use Moly Grease particularly for ringfield gears.

Thanks for sharing this - saved for when I get around to servicing mine. I'll give my O1 and Q6 the same treatment too - I think they have the same treacle lubricant.

Have you tried power lube? For pickups etc
@oobill3 күн бұрын
Yes I have. Personally I wouldn't buy it again. A tiny amount of thin machine oil does the same job. Don't fall for expensive "conductive" lubricant snake oil.

I've noticed the same thing with Hornbys B17/1 that I got last year, takes a wee while to warm up. But runs fine otherwise. Credit where credits due though, I personally think Hornbys steam loco models are incredibly well designed for ease of service and such a joy to service.

The dock shunters may be available at a relatively reasonable price but if you want to add finer scale wheels, you can easily double that amount!

I hope that was silicone oil, most oils will attack plastic. Your best best for the gear lubication is silicone grease.

I have 2 or three of these little locos; I vaguely remember that it was the first one I had with my first train set for Christmas, about 1958. Have you any idea which new wheels Geoff fitted? I am looking to replace the old ones on mine, partly to get rid of the noisy "knurled" ones, but mostly to fit more modern ones that will negotiate current pointwork etc. Thanks

The Hogwarts castle tender seemed to be running badly could that be the cause of the locomotive trouble. I am sure I saw the tender jumping and swaying on points though I was watching on my phone.

Hi bill with the mallard were you given the decoder loco number as you need this to run dcc, these are normally set to 03 which is the default,but you can change the address of the loco on a programming track and in your case your on your test track
@RichardNunn-p6k5 күн бұрын
Great video as always. Interesting comments about the Class 37 going "back and forth to Hornby." Even though it was "their" loco they never managed to sort it out, and 40 years later you fixed it in one visit!!

The DCC decoder maybe okay Bill, there is a CV setting when the decoder is programmed that allows DC running to be switched on or off.
@oobill6 күн бұрын
I tested it under DCC using a DCC controller.
@dansmodelrailways78866 күн бұрын
Decoders have to be DC compatible for running on DC. Not all Decoders support it or have had the CV setting altered. It doesn’t mean the decoder is a dud.
@oobill6 күн бұрын
When I said in the video I tested it under DCC I meant actual DCC control with a DCC controller. Not just with the decoder plugged in under DC. There was nothing under DCC even assigning a new value.
@dansmodelrailways78866 күн бұрын
@@oobillah fair enough. I thought id mention it as I do see alot of people discarding decoders as junked if they dont operate on dc. Recently i bought a load of decoders cheap as they were sold as non working, only to find them fine on dcc but not on dc! DCC is a good thing to have and opens up brilliant running with no iso sections and sound etc, however conversion of existing fleets such as your own would be very expensive. Luckily went over to dcc early on when my fleet was small and then buying a chip at the same time as a loco spreads the costs. If i had to convert my own fleet over now i wouldn’t do it due to the costs involved.
@dfishpool70526 күн бұрын
Hi Bill, Happy New Year! Thanks for the video, very interesting. As to DCC you have all the skills; just jump into it. I've managed to convert all my locos from the 1970s to DCC running and they all run better than they ever did in their original state. The only ones that I didn't manage to convert were the Mainline split chassis ones that used a ring field motor.
@ausfoodgarden6 күн бұрын
You really should get into DCC if you can. The encoder fitting etc. is pretty simple electrically, the hard bit is working out where to fit stuff. With your model rail experience, I'm sure you'll be great at it. I don't even have a "proper" DCC controller. Just a Hornby elink and a home-built DCC EX setup based on an Arduino that cost very little. Cheers!
@oobill6 күн бұрын
I do intend to offer a DCC conversion service in the future but I need to rebuild my workspace and invest in some equipment first. And also consider the likely implications as it might be a bit of a Pandora's box.
@modelmaker85976 күн бұрын
Hi Bill, the Mallard's decoder my not be a dud. DCC decoders have CVs (control variables), and one of them (number 29) has a setting that determines whether the decoder will respond under DC or not - a lot of DCC 'experts' say you should not run a DCC decoder under DC, so many decoders default this particular setting to 'No'. The settings can be modified with a suitable DCC controller. So if your client runs DCC the decoder might still work for him/her and/or changing CV29 might get it to work under DC.
@oobill6 күн бұрын
I tested it with a DCC controller and it was dead but it worked fine under DC with a blanking plate so I think the chip is a dud.

Sounds like for a lot of us, the Dock Shunter was one of our first locos. It may not be the world's best model, but is very nostalgic to see! Sadly I no longer have my original one.
@JerseyBill-x9r6 күн бұрын
Well, you have been busy and I'm not up on DCC either, but it is the way the future of the hobby is going. I do find it straight forward for wiring feed the decoder and the decoder will run everything but the rest like programing is unfamiliar to me plus I don't have the equipment. I imagine you would have it down in a few hours and it all would be old hat. Great video, Jersey Bill
